Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dramatic Stories, Vol. 1 of 3 Almost the same consistency as the embers, among which they had been placed; the ale, which had been punctually drawn from a large air-tight vat, had, bubble by bubble, lost the creamy cap wherewith it had crowned the deep burnt clay tankard, into which it had been emptied; and the honey, which stood by, in a similar but smaller jar, on a three-legged round oaken block (serving as a table, ) seemed by the number of flies, which were struggling through its tenacious sweets, to afford strong presumption that it also had been for a long time exposed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dramatic Stories, Vol. 3 of 3 This man was but a moderate talker; in fact it would seem, from the general tenor of his scanty discourse, that he had closely studied to avoid the utterance of all unnecessary words, and to carry on every conversation in which he was engaged, in as monosyllabic, a dialogue as possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dramas, Vol. 1 of 3 In thus relinquishing my original intention, there is one thing particularly soothing to my feelings, - that those friendly readers who eu couraged my early dramatic writings (alas, how reduced in numbers!) will see the comple tion of the whole. This will, at least, gratify their curiosity; and it would be ungrateful in me not to believe that they will, also take some interest in the latter part of a work, the be ginning of which their partial favour so kindly fostered. Book Dramatic Works Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Dramatic Works Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint written by Henry Fielding and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dramatic Works, Vol. 1 of 3 I believe few plays have ever adventured into the world under greater disadvantages than this. First, as it succeeded a comedy which, for the continued Space of twenty-eight nights, received as great (and as just) applauses, as ever were bestowed on the English Theatre. And secondly, as it is co-temporary with an entertain ment which engrosses the whole talk and admiration of the town. These were difficulties which seemed rather to require the superior force of a Wycherley, or a Congreve, than of a raw and unexperienced pen; for I believe I may boast that none ever appeared so early upon the stage. How ever, such was the candour of the audience, the play was received with greater satisfaction than I should have promised myself from its merit, had it even preceded the Provoked Husband. But after having returned thanks to the spectators, I cannot rest till I have been in some measure grateful to the performers. As for Mr. Wilks and Mr. Cibber, I cannot sufficiently acknowledge their civil and kind be haviour previous to its representation. How advantageously both they and the other personages set off their respective parts, at that time, has been spoken of by much politer and better judges than myself. Lastly, I can never express my grateful sense of the good nature of Mrs. Oldfield; who, though she had contracted a slight indisposition by her violent fatigue in the part of Lady Townly, was prevailed on to grace that of Lady Matchless; which placed her in a light so far inferior to that which she had in the other. Nor do I owe less to her excellent judgment, shown in some corrections, which I shall, for my own sake, conceal. But the ravishing perfections of this lady are so much the admiration of every eye and every ear, that they will remained fixed in the memory of many, when these light scenes shall be forgotten. Mr. Dryden, in his Essay of Dramatic Poetry, page 17, (in the first volume of the 'folio edition of his works) in a comparison of the French and English comedy, says, As for corned repartee is one of its chiefest graces. Download or read book Works Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint written by Christopher Marlowe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Works, Vol. 1 of 3 The present volumes are the first instalment towards a collective edition of the dramatists who lived about the time of Shakespeare. As the series is intended neither for school-boys nor antiquarians, I have avoided discussions on grammatical usages, and I have not preserved the orthography of the old copies. In Elizabethan times orthography followed the caprices of the printer. I desire to acknowledge in the fullest and frankest manner the obligation under which I lie towards the late Mr. Dyce. Perhaps it will be thought that Mr. Dyce's name occurs too frequently in the notes to the present volumes. In many cases the emendations he proposes would naturally suggest themselves to any sensible reader; but I was unwilling to incur the suspicion of having furtively appropriated my predecessor's notes.
