Herself a member of the landed gentry, Bertha has been raised to cultivate an "immoderate desire for knowledge" and to understand, and enjoy, European culture of both past and present ages. In particular, during long stays on the Continent, she has learned to appreciate Italy's tremendous cultural heritage. A "virtuous" girl, her views on womanhood are thoroughly traditional…. Book Love in Contemporary British Drama

Download or read book Love in Contemporary British Drama written by Korbinian Stöckl and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the recent turn to affects and emotions in the humanities and despite the unceasing popularity of romantic and erotic love as a motif in fictional works of all genres, the subject has received surprisingly little attention in academic studies of contemporary drama. Love in Contemporary British Drama reflects the appeal of love as a topic and driving force in dramatic works with in-depth analyses of eight pivotal plays from the past three decades. Following an interdisciplinary and historical approach, the study collects and condenses theories of love from philosophy and sociology to derive persisting discourses and to examine their reoccurrence and transformation in contemporary plays. Special emphasis is put on narratives of love’s compensatory function and precariousness and on how modifications of these narratives epitomise the peculiarities of emotional life in the social and cultural context of the present. Based on the assumption that drama is especially inclined to draw on shared narratives for representations of love, the book demonstrates that love is both a window to remnants of the past in the present and a proper subject matter for drama in times in which the suitability of the dramatic form has been questioned.

Download or read book Real Love No Drama written by Danny Alexander and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary J. Blige is an icon who represents the political consciousness of hip hop and the historical promise of soul. She is an everywoman, celebrated by Oprah Winfrey and beloved by pop music fans of all ages and races. Blige has sold over fifty million albums, won numerous Grammys, and even played at multiple White House events, as well as the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. Displaying astonishing range and versatility, she has recorded everything from Broadway standards to Led Zeppelin anthems and worked with some of popular music’s greatest artists—Aretha Franklin, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Whitney Houston, Sting, U2, and Beyoncé, among them. Real Love, No Drama: The Music of Mary J. Blige tells the story of one of the most important artists in pop music history. Danny Alexander follows the whole arc of Blige’s career, from her first album, which heralded the birth of “hip hop soul,” to her critically praised 2014 album, The London Sessions. He highlights the fact that Blige was part of the historically unprecedented movement of black women onto pop radio and explores how she and other women took control of their careers and used their music to give voice to women’s (and men’s) everyday struggles and dreams. This book adds immensely to the story of both black women artists and artists rooted in hip hop and pays tribute to a musician who, by expanding her reach and asking tough questions about how music can and should evolve, has proven herself an artistic visionary.

Download or read book Women in Love written by Larry Kramer and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Screenplays and scripts from the playwright of The Normal Heart. “A valuable showcase of an important writer’s early career.”—The Bay Area Reporter Larry Kramer has been described by Susan Sontag as “one of America’s most valuable troublemakers.” As Frank Rich writes in his Foreword to this collection of writings for the screen and stage, “his plays are almost journalistic in their observation of the fine-grained documentary details of life . . . that may well prove timeless.” The title work, the Oscar-nominated screenplay for Women in Love, is a movie “as sensuous as anything you’ve probably ever seen on film” (The New York Times). The screenplay is accompanied by Kramer’s reflections on the history of the production, sure to be of interest to any student of film. This volume also includes several early plays, Sissies’ Scrapbook, A Minor Dark Age, and the political farce Just Say No, illuminating the development of one of our most important literary figures. “Since his screenplay for Women in Love, Kramer has been a prophet of psychic health and catastrophe among us.” (from The American Academy of Arts and Letters citation). Women in Love “A visual stunner and very likely the most sensual film ever made.”—New York Daily News “Throughout Larry Kramer’s literate scenario, the Lawrentian themes blaze and gutter. The sooty mind-crushing coal mines that Lawrence knew like the back of his hand are re-created in all their malignance. The annealing quality of sex is exhibited in the most erotic—and tasteful—lust scenes anywhere in contemporary film.”—Time
