Book excerpt: Ever since comedies were first performed in the ancient world, the definition of the term ‘comedy’ has been debated by both playwrights and critics. Originally published in 1978, this volume does not attempt a precise definition, but reviews the various interpretations that have been put forward through the ages, taking as evidence important theoretical writings as well as the plays themselves, and pointing out not only common features but also notable exceptions. The comic drama of Western Europe since the Renaissance is here surveyed in a series of chapters devoted principally to the tradition of European comedy as it developed in the major national literatures. The perspective is expanded to include, on the one hand, the origins in classical Greece and Rome and, on the other, the influence of cinema, radio and television comedy at the time – American as well as European. A structural basis for the volume as a whole is provided in an analytical introduction, where the essential problems are defined: such issues as the relationship between comedy and satire, comedy and farce; the distinction between laughter and smile; the respective claims of realism and fantasy; the role of plot and of dialogue; the place of sentiment and of moral teaching; and the possibility of comic catharsis. In this way the nature and evolution of European comedy is presented in an original and coherent form, not only offering an invaluable aid to students seeking guidance in literature of which they are not making a specialist study, but stimulating the more experienced reader to think again about familiar plays.

Book The Cambridge Companion to Ibsen

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Ibsen written by James Walter McFarlane and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the history of modern theatre, Ibsen is one of the dominating figures. The sixteen chapters of this 1994 Companion explore his life and work, providing an invaluable reference work for students. In chronological terms they range from an account of Ibsen's earliest pieces, through the years of rich experimentation, to the mature 'Ibsenist' plays that made him famous towards the end of the nineteenth century. Among the thematic topics are discussions of Ibsen's comedy, realism, lyric poetry and feminism. Substantial chapters account for Ibsen's influence on the international stage and his challenge to theatre and film directors and playwrights today. Essential reference materials include a full chronology, list of works and essays on twentieth-century criticism and further reading.

The Emphasis Shifted From The Male Protagonist To The Unwomanly Woman Who Is Shown More As A Product Of Social, Economic And Political Interactions Than Individual Creation. The Focus Is On The Early And Middle Plays Of Bernard Shaw And The Influence Of Ibsen S Plays Has Been Given Their Rightful Place. Most Of Shaw S Major Plays From Widowers Houses To Pygmalion, Come Under The Purview Of The Book, While The Plays Of Contemporaries Like Pinero, Jones And Oscar Wilde Have Been Discussed To Highlight The Contrast.More Interesting Are The Unknown Assertive Heroines Of Galsworthy S Middle And Late Plays From The Eldest Son And The Fugitive To The Skin Game. His Women Characters Remain In Oblivion Because Hardly Any Scholar Has Bothered To Study Them. Though Granville Barker Is Well-Known As A Critic And Director Of Shakespeare S Plays, His Own Plays With The New Woman As Heroine Still Remain Little Known In The Academic Circle.
