In the best of professional tradition, the reader is given background, means and method, and materials and application. In this book I have tried to combine the theory necessary for complete understanding of the radio play as a dramatic form with the tools and techniques that make it possible to translate the radio play into living drama. In attempting to write a definitive text, I have incurred obligations that I can only acknowledge, never repay. To my former colleague, Dr. William Peery, of the Department of English of the University of Texas, I am extremely indebted for criticism of portions of the first draft of Section One, and for many helpful suggestions on style and content of the book as a whole.
