Book Drama as a Method of Enhancing the Development of Sociodramatic Play in Young Children

Download or read book Drama as a Method of Enhancing the Development of Sociodramatic Play in Young Children written by Una McCabe and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines the effect of adult intervention in the form of Drama in Education methodology on the dramatic and socio dramatic play of children aged three to six. The research studies the quality of dramatic and sociodramatic play in children prior to intervention and then studies the effect on their play when adults plan and implement drama experiences. The Smilansky Scale for assessing dramatic and sociodramatic play is used a measurement of children{u2019}s engagement, and its application provides quantitative and qualitative information in relation to the impact of drama on children{u2019}s use of the six criterion referenced Smilansky categories of sociodramatic play. The Drama related experiences of Irish students who will ultimately work as educators of children aged three to six is also investigated and shows the extent to which those graduates are prepared to support socio dramatic play behaviour. Conclusions and recommendations are made regarding the provision for socio dramatic play in Early Childhood Education settings in Ireland. Differences between girls{u2019} and boys{u2019} engagement of girls and boys in sociodramatic play emerge in the study and suggestions are made about how to consider this in using Drama with young children. Implications also arise relating to general practice with different abilities and age groups and these are discussed. The importance of working in role as an element of pedagogy is explained. It is linked to its impact on the language and interaction skills of young learners that are the crucial elements of sociodramatic play according to the Smilansky scale. As seen in this study, these are elements of socio dramatic play that many children struggle with, especially when not supported by an adult who can work with them through the medium of Drama.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of drama in primary school has been elevated in recent years, with many teachers continuing to make it high priority in their teaching. They recognise that it can enrich children's understanding of the world and motivate and encourage them in other curriculum work. This lively and readable book offers a blend of theory and practice based on the author's own considerable experience as a drama teacher. He provides numerous examples taken from work with children in schools, which will help teachers to prepare for drama sessions in the classroom. The book examines the role of drama as a subject in its own right as well as its role in delivering other aspects of the curriculum within primary education. It assumes no prior knowledge of teaching drama and will therefore be useful to trainee teachers and in-service teachers wanting to make use of drama in their daily teaching.

Book The Benefits of Sociodramatic Play a Resource Book for Early Childhood Educators and Parents

Download or read book The Benefits of Sociodramatic Play a Resource Book for Early Childhood Educators and Parents written by Megan E.. Matteoni and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The act of play is essential to children's development. Through play, empathy, communication, symbolic thinking as well as collaboration and problem-solving skills are learned and practiced. The current project addresses sociodramatic play as a creative projection of children's cognitive development and aid in developing their prosocial interactions. The active cooperative interactions between participants during sociodramatic play, requires the participants to take on complementary roles that correspond with the same focus or direction of the play scenario. Sociodramatic play is the fusion of fantasy and social play, where imaginations collaborate to create play scenarios that are physically and mentally portrayed. It requires the separation of thoughts from actions, which is referred to as symbolic representation. The skills associated with symbolic representation are not only precursors to developing literacy skills, but also develop the individual's emotional security and ability to self-regulate. Through extensive research, a resource book was created to support early childhood educators and parents of young children in comprehending the cognitive and emotional advantages of sociodramatic play as well as ways to promote this form of play within the classroom and at home. The resource book was presented to evaluators, ranging from educators to parents of preschool children. The evaluators read and completed a one-page questionnaire based on the book's usefulness to their field. Overall, the resource book was viewed as a valuable piece of research to the field. Nine of 11 (82%) of evaluators strongly agreed with the statement that the book was well written and its objectives were met, while 18% of evaluators agreed, and no one disagreed or strongly disagreed. The evaluators enjoyed reading the personal experiences shared and appreciated how personal stories were tied to theory exploration and discussions of current research throughout the book. Eight of 9 (72%) of evaluators, working within the education field, stated they would recommend the resource book to their colleagues, and 10 of 11 (90%) of all evaluators stated they would recommend the book to parents.

Book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8

Download or read book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.

Book Early Childhood Curriculum for All Learners

Download or read book Early Childhood Curriculum for All Learners written by Ann M. Selmi and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Childhood Curriculum for All Learners: Integrating Play and Literacy Activities is designed to teach early childhood professionals about the latest research on play and early literacy and then to show them practical methods for adapting this research to everyday classroom practices that will encourage the development of learning skills. The authors link solid, play-based research to specific developmentally appropriate practices. By combining these two areas, the text demonstrates that academic learning and play activities are highly compatible, and that children can and do develop academic skills through play. In addition, the text focuses on socio-dramatic play, a recently acknowledged, essential aspect of child-initiated play interactions. It provides specific strategies that link these interactive behaviors with the early academic skills needed for the initial primary grades. Implementation of the information presented in this book will enable children to experience a richer transition into primary education classrooms.
