Book Design of Roadside Channels with Flexible Linings

Download or read book Design of Roadside Channels with Flexible Linings written by Y. H. Chen and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flexible linings provide a means of stabilizing roadside channels. Flexible linings are able to conform to changes in channel shape while maintaining the overall lining integrity. Permanent flexible lining such as riprap, gravel, or vegetation reinforced with synthetic mat are suitable for hydraulic conditions similar to those requiring rigid linings. Vegetation or temporary linings are suited to hydraulic condition where uniform flow exists and shear stresses are moderate. Design procedures are given for rock riprap, wire-enclosed riprap, gravel riprap, woven paper net, jute net, fiberglass roving, curled wood mat, synthetic mat, and straw with net. Special design procedures are presented for composite channels and channels with steep gradients. The design procedures are based on the concept of maximum permissible tractive force. Methods for determination of hydraulic resistance and permissible shear stress for individual linings are presented. Nomographs are provided for solution of uniform flow conditions in trapezoidal channels. Nomographs are also provided for determination of resistance characteristics for vegetation and permissible shear stress for soils. (fr).

Book Geosynthetics in Filtration Drainage and Erosion Control

Download or read book Geosynthetics in Filtration Drainage and Erosion Control written by R.M. Koerner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geosynthetics can, and have, played a pivotal role in providing the primary functions of filtration, drainage and erosion control. Within each category this book counterpoints the design, testing and performance of the various materials against one another. The facilitation of filtration by a number of different woven and non–woven geotextiles is discussed. Design is centred around a balance between open voids [for adequate permeability] and closed voids [for proper soil retention]. This balance is compromised by long term clogging or soil loss from either the upstream soil particles or by the nature of the permeating fluid. This is a major focal area of the book. One solution to excessive filter clogging is to open up the geotextile's voids and allow sediments and micro–organisms in the permeating fluid to pass through. The challenge then becomes the design and potential clogging of the drain. The drainage aspect of geosynthetics is the second focal area. Erosion control is closely related to both filtration and drainage. The tremendous design problems, and equally large repair problems on all types of facilities, are addressed. Highway slopes, earth dams, landfill covers and solid waste daily covers are a few common situations.
