Book excerpt: This Thesis presents an investigation of the subsurface drainage features of the test pavement at the United States (U.S.) Route 50 joint sealant experiment near Athens, Ohio. The pavement incorporates a 4-in. thick open-graded base, whose design is assessed using the software DRIP 2.0, distributed by the Federal Highway Administration. It is found that the specified base thickness and permeability combination do not meet federal guidelines, evidently because no design calculations had been performed prior to construction. A field inspection of the test pavement drainage features revealed that these had received very scant to no maintenance. Drainage outlets were unmarked, overgrown by vegetation, difficult to find or sometimes missing, often clogged and occasionally damaged. A literature review indicated that such problems are endemic in many states and point to an under appreciation of proper drainage in concrete pavements. A review of the structural performance of the test pavement found no obvious correlation with the condition of a variety of sealant treatments applied during the experiment.

Book excerpt: In Phase I, the research team contacted each of 16 participating states to gather information about concrete and concrete material tests. A preliminary suite of tests to ensure long-term pavement performance was developed. The tests were selected to provide useful and easy-to-interpret results that can be performed reasonably and routinely in terms of time, expertise, training, and cost. The tests examine concrete pavement properties in five focal areas critical to the long life and durability of concrete pavements: (1) workability, (2) strength development, (3) air system, (4) permeability, and (5) shrinkage. The tests were relevant at three stages in the concrete paving process: mix design, preconstruction verification, and construction quality control. In Phase II, the research team conducted field testing in each participating state to evaluate the preliminary suite of tests and demonstrate the testing technologies and procedures using local materials.

It provides information on the positive effects of good subsurface drainage and the negative effects of poor subsurface drainage on pavement surfaces. This report of the Transportation Research Board presents data obtained from a review of the literature and a survey of the state DOTs. It is a supplemental update to NCHRP Synthesis of Highway Practice 96, Pavement Subsurface Drainage Systems (1982). The synthesis provides a supplement to design issues not found in Synthesis 96, but faced by current designers, e.g., type and quality of aggregate, compaction requirements for open-graded aggregates, asphalt and cement binders, and use of geosynthetics. In addition, it describes the effects of design, construction, and maintenance decisions on the performance of pavement subsurface drainage systems.
