Book excerpt: "This book is the true story of what i[t] was like being a product of the Baby Boom, growing up in a fast-changing world, and being a small spoke in the big green wheel of a very unpopular war. It's also about surviving the war, only to return to a country full of anti-war sentiment and great disdain for its own young men that they had sent off to war. These are the memoirs of a man who has answered his country's call, served in the jungles, rice paddies, and rubber plantations of South Vietnam...I walk you through my military career. From receiving my draft notice, through...finally being discharged after two years of service. I continue...sharing with you what it was like coming back to civilian life, trying to find work, taking advantage of the GI Bill, and always dealing with the stigma of Vietnam." --Author's Introduction.

Book Virginia in the War Years 1938 1945

Download or read book Virginia in the War Years 1938 1945 written by Joseph P. Freitus and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although World War II began as a war in Europe, many in the United States, foreseeing the inevitable, began to prepare for war, putting no faith in the Neutrality Act. Preparations for war, essentially ending the Great Depression, affected the entire country, with Virginia particularly playing a major role. More than one million service men and women came to Virginia. The sheer scope of the military development in Virginia of the Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force, providing training bases and support facilities, underscores the national resolve to be prepared. The book includes the Civil Air Patrol, wartime industry, POW camps, U-boat attacks, the Beach Patrol and other Virginia-related topics.

Book Random Destiny How the Vietnam War Draft Lottery Shaped a Generation

Download or read book Random Destiny How the Vietnam War Draft Lottery Shaped a Generation written by Wesley Abney and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2018-09-30 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a concise but thorough summary of how the selective service system worked from 1965 through 1973, and also demonstrates how this selective process, during a highly unpopular war, steered major life choices of millions of young men seeking deferrals based on education, occupation, marital and family status, sexual orientation, and more. This book explains each category of deferral and its resulting “ripple effect” across society. Putting a human face on these sociological trends, the book also includes a number of brief personal anecdotes from men in each category, told from a remove of 40 years or more, when the lifelong effects of youthful decisions prompted by the draft have become evident. There are few books which address the military draft of the Vietnam years, most notably CHANCE AND CIRCUMSTANCE: The Draft, the War and the Vietnam Generation, by Baskir and Strauss (1978). This early study of draft-age men discusses how they were socially channeled by the selective service system. RANDOM DESTINY follows up on this premise and draws from numerous later studies of men in the lottery pool, to create the definitive portrait of the draft and its long-term personal and social effects. RANDOM DESTINY presents an in-depth explanation of the selective service system in its final years. It also provides a comprehensive yet personal portrait of how the draft and the lottery steered a generation of young lives into many different paths, from combat to conscientious objection, from teaching to prison, from the pulpit to the Canadian border, from public health to gay liberation. It is the only recent book which demonstrates how American military conscription, in the time of an unpopular war, profoundly influenced a generation and a society over the decades that followed.

Book Rough Draft

    Book Details:
  • Author : Amy J. Rutenberg
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2019-09-15
  • ISBN : 1501739379
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Rough Draft written by Amy J. Rutenberg and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rough Draft draws the curtain on the race and class inequities of the Selective Service during the Vietnam War. Amy J. Rutenberg argues that policy makers' idealized conceptions of Cold War middle-class masculinity directly affected whom they targeted for conscription and also for deferment. Federal officials believed that college educated men could protect the nation from the threat of communism more effectively as civilians than as soldiers. The availability of deferments for this group mushroomed between 1945 and 1965, making it less and less likely that middle-class white men would serve in the Cold War army. Meanwhile, officials used the War on Poverty to target poorer and racialized men for conscription in the hopes that military service would offer them skills they could use in civilian life. As Rutenberg shows, manpower policies between World War II and the Vietnam War had unintended consequences. While some men resisted military service in Vietnam for reasons of political conscience, most did so because manpower polices made it possible. By shielding middle-class breadwinners in the name of national security, policymakers militarized certain civilian roles—a move that, ironically, separated military service from the obligations of masculine citizenship and, ultimately, helped kill the draft in the United States.

Book Born and Raised in Sawdust

Download or read book Born and Raised in Sawdust written by Lewis Thigpen Ph.D. PE and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born and Raised in Sawdust: My Journey Around the World in Eighty Years is the deeply moving autobiography of Lewis Thigpen as a black boy growing up in a loving family in a small, tight knit community in the deep South during the extremely segregated Jim Crow era. It captures his life on the farm and in school in a revealing, instructive, yet colorful way despite the discrimination he encountered. Fearful of being a farm worker or common laborer for the rest of his life, he joined the U.S. Army, where racism persisted even though President Truman had ordered desegregation of the entire military in 1948. He served for three years. Against the odds, Thigpen persevered. Despite adversity and lack of money, he attended college, earned the Ph.D. degree, and became a renowned engineer, research scientist, and scholar. He rose to become chair of mechanical engineering at a distinguished university. The book is an easy read, designed for those who choose to pick it up at a bookstore, order it online, check it out at their public library, or download it to Kindle or other apps. It is a valuable addition to the canon of biographies, histories, literary works and cultural studies of the South. It captures the mood of Southern writers such as Flannery O’Conner, Pearl Cleage, William Faulkner, Richard Wright and Ralph Ellison. Readers interested in family history and ancestry will love tracing through Dr. Thigpen’s family tree, photographs and drawings. One photo shows him holding a silver salmon, the outcome of one of his favorite hobbies—fishing. In his autobiography, Dr. Thigpen brings the clarity and conciseness of an engineer and research scientist who has written and published numerous articles in refereed journals.
