Book Climate Change and Environmental Ethics

Download or read book Climate Change and Environmental Ethics written by David Shakow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a broad consensus that climate change presents the international community with a formidable challenge. Yet progress on all fronts-prevention, mitigation, and adaptation-has been slow. Ved P. Nanda finds an explanation for this disparity in the sharp divide between the developed and developing countries. Developing countries demand that major industrialized nations provide the necessary resources and technology to address climate change, while many developed countries seek firm commitments and timetables on action from the developing countries. The result is a stalemate. Climate Change and Environmental Ethics contains first-rate research and thinking from scholars from multiple disciplines-ethics, ecology, philosophy, economics, political science, history, and international law. What distinguishes this volume from recent work on climate change are two of its special features. One is the multi-disciplinary backgrounds of the scholars, their stellar experiences, and the wisdom with which they express not simply their philosophy and theory but also their suggestions for concrete, specific action in practical terms. The second is the special niche this volume fills in its overarching theme of the need for a renewed environmental ethic that can bring together these disparate but interconnected views. This volume explores alternative ways of conceiving our relation to the natural world. A spirit of international cooperation and collaboration is needed to meet the challenge. The reader is complelled to think anew about our understanding of the scientific and technical issues, as well as our values and ethical responsibilities regarding climate change.

Book Innovation and Experimentation in the International Climate Change Regime

Download or read book Innovation and Experimentation in the International Climate Change Regime written by Lavanya Rajamani and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-02-22 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a critical lens to humanity’s collective regulatory response to the existential threat of climate change. It explores those aspects of the international climate change regime that, albeit born of political dysfunction, demonstrate ingenuity, innovation and experimentation. This includes aspects relating to the legal form of instruments in the regime, the legal character of its provisions, as well as norm hybridity and mutation, and the nature, extent and evolution of differential treatment in the regime. This book argues that innovations and experiments in the international climate change regime have resulted in a highly sophisticated and nuanced legal regime – one that challenges the conceptual boundaries of international law, enriches the core of treaty law and practice and is likely to have an enduring impact on international law, legal practice and diplomatic intercourse.

Book New Orleans Under Reconstruction

Download or read book New Orleans Under Reconstruction written by Michael Sorkin and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the levee system protecting New Orleans failed and was overtopped in August 2005 following the arrival of Hurricane Katrina, 80 percent of the city was flooded, with a loss of 103,000 homes in the metropolitan area. At least 986 Louisiana residents died. The devastation hit vulnerable communities the hardest: the elderly, the poor, and African-Americans. The disaster exposed shocking inequalities in the city. In response, numerous urban plans and myriad architectural projects were proposed. Nearly nine years later, debates about planning and design for recovery, renewal, and resilience continue. This bold, challenging, and informed book gathers together a panorama of responses from writers, architects, planners, historians, and activists-including Mike Davis, Rebecca Solnit, Naomi Klein, Denise Scott Brown, and M. Christine Boyer-and searches for answers to one of the most important questions of our age: How can we plan for the urban future, creating more environmentally sustainable, economically robust, and socially equitable places to live? A 2014 grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts supported in part the publication of this book.

Download or read book Draft sentencing guideline written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Justice Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009-08-13 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee considers that the "Overarching principles - sentencing youths" is a crucial sentencing guideline. It fills a critical gap, setting out for youth courts the basis upon which they should sentence offenders under the age of 18 - guidance which the youth courts have not previously had. The Committee's response highlights the key issues raised in evidence to it, for example, the apparent inconsistency in approaches to sentencing children, and a varied understanding among sentencers of the concept that custody should only ever be a "sentence of last resort" for young people. The Committee also stresses that courts should have access to information about a young offender's mental health, learning difficulties and communication problems to enable the most appropriate sentence to be imposed. The evidence the Committee took on this draft sentencing guideline highlighted key areas in relation to youth justice deserving of further scrutiny, such as the use of remand and provisions for offenders aged 18-24, and it will consider how to pursue these areas further in its work.

Book European Ship Recycling Regulation

Download or read book European Ship Recycling Regulation written by Urs Daniel Engels and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-12 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides an in-depth analysis of the Hong Kong Ship Recycling Convention as adopted in May 2009 and a thorough analysis of the overall status quo of ship recycling regulations. It investigates the lack of sufficient ratifications of the Convention from both a legal and an economic perspective. The first part of the study focuses on the history of the Convention’s entry-into-force provision and the rationale behind it. Due to the fact that this provision provides a considerable additional obstacle to the Convention’s becoming legally binding, in the second part the focus of the work shifts to unilateral action in this field. An overview of the legal environment of European ship recycling legislation is followed by an analysis and evaluation of a number of proposals by the European Commission attempting to tackle the problems of current ship recycling procedures. With a particular emphasis on (planned) European measures in this regard, the analysis’ overall message is one of cautious optimism.

Book HL 52 The United Kingdom Opt in to the Draft CEPOL Regulation

Download or read book HL 52 The United Kingdom Opt in to the Draft CEPOL Regulation written by The Stationery Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2015-10-24 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CEPOL aims is to bring together senior police officers from across Europe to share research and best practice, to encourage cross-border cooperation in the fight against crime and to help facilitate training and exchange programmes between European police forces. However, in March 2013, the Commission presented a proposal for a new Europol Regulation, one effect of which would have been to merge CEPOL with Europol. The Committee, the Government, the Directors of Europol and CEPOL, the European Parliament and the Council all opposed the proposed merger. A separate Regulation on CEPOL was therefore proposed. The new draft Regulation would allow CEPOL "broader objectives" and "modernised governance". The Government supports the work of CEPOL but is unhappy with a number of proposals in the Regulation, including the removal of the requirement that all attendees on CEPOL courses should be senior police officers, and the suggestion that Member States should designate a national unit to contribute to CEPOL's work programmes. The Committee points out that there are legal reasons why the UK must, at some stage, opt-in to the Regulation. It recommends that the Government to do so now, to give the UK a place at the negotiating table when the draft Regulation is discussed.
