Even though the treaty was created to legally end the state of war between Japan and its Pacific War enemies, many other considerations - some of which had hardly anything to do with the Pacific War - were involved. The US-Soviet rivalry was the most representative, but this was not the only factor. For instance, the decision to invite Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam as signatories was determined based on French colonial interests, Indochinese yearning for independence and the need for French contribution in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Similarly, German reparations settlements after the First and Second World Wars impacted Japanese reparations settlement. Meanwhile, the commercial terms of the treaty were informed by the Great Depression and its legacies. This book addresses these aspects of the peace treaty that are hitherto not sufficiently elaborated upon in existing studies. Highlighting the importance of the treaty for shaping postwar East Asia and international relations in the region to the present day, this book will be a valuable resource for students and scholars of post-war Japan, International relations, and the Cold War.

The narratives begin in the seventeenth century and weave their way through various events connected to the ambitions, hopes, and machinations of individuals, communities, and nations. At the center of these narratives are the Bonin Islanders, originally an eclectic mix of Pacific Islanders, Americans, British, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, and African settlers that first landed on the islands in 1830. The islands were British sovereign territory from 1827 to 1876, when the Japanese asserted possession of the islands based on a seventeenth century expedition and a myth of a samurai discoverer. As part of gaining sovereign control, the Japanese government made all island inhabitants register as Japanese subjects of the national family register. The islanders were not literate in Japanese and had little experience of Japanese culture and limited knowledge of Japanese society, but by 1881 all were forced or coerced into becoming Japanese subjects. By the 1930s the islands were embroiled in the Pacific War. All inhabitants were evacuated to the Japanese mainland until 1946 when only the descendants of the original settlers were allowed to return. In the postwar period the islands fell under U.S. Navy administration until they were reverted to full Japanese sovereignty in 1968. Many descendants of these original settlers still live on the islands with family names such as Washington, Gonzales, Gilley, Savory, and Webb. This book explores the social and cultural history of these islands and its inhabitants and provides a critical approach to understanding the many complex narratives that make up the Bonin story.

From my studies, however, I came to learn that the Dokdo issue is a ramification, or one of the shadows, of the sway and decision power the U.S. exerted on the post-war policies for Northeast Asia. Therefore, it would be more accurate to say that the dispute over the sovereignty of Dokdo after the Second World War involves the U.S. as well and that it is a matter of regional and international politics rather than that of history. \"The idea for this book came about in 2001 when I was studying the U.S. State Department’s diplomatic documents from the 1950s in the National Archives and Records Administration. The records were telling a different story from what average Koreans know about Korea-Japan relations and the Dokdo issue. Although much of the documents about Korea-Japan relations and the Dokdo issue were still classified, I was able to see that the 1951 Treaty of San Francisco was the starting point of, as well as a turning point for, the U.S. policies and diplomatic decisions on Dokdo. So I started delving into the archives of the U.S., Japan, Korea, and the UK. I looked into how the San Francisco Treaty—which officially settled the war between Japan and the U.S.-led Allies—relates to Korea and how it became a turning point for Korea-Japan relations, Korea-U.S. relations, and U.S.-Japan relations. I found myself on a journey of exploring how the San Francisco system shaped the new post-war order in Northeast Asia; how Korea, the U.S., Japan, and the UK viewed and responded to Japan’s territorial issues including that of Dokdo; and how Korea-U.S. relations, U.S.-Japan relations, and Korea-Japan relations had changed over the years.
