This volume delves into this world of urban planning as critical insiders to see how it works in India, analysing the city level spatial plans, the Master or Development Plans, of select cities to assess whether these are capable of addressing the global agendas and coordinate with all other plans prepared for the city. It examines whether it would work in reference to the contemporary issues, SDGs, and global agendas, and discusses strategies on how to make it work better. It also deals with each of the above stated criticisms of the practice and examines the debates, data, approaches, agendas, plans, and the future of urban planning in India. It attempts to highlight the various processes and geopolitical landmarks during the nine-thousand-years-long evolutionary processes of physical planning and development in the Indian subcontinent in general and those in Pakistan in particular. It traverses a long temporal and evolutionary progression of town planning processes in Pakistan. This book is a very modest effort to fill a huge gap and may even provide an incentive for the future planning historians and academicians to undertake more in-depth cross-sectional analysis of various processes comprehensively.

Building upon recent research on the history of green landscapes in the city in Europe and North America, this volume mirrors the burgeoning global attention to urban green space developments from city policy-makers and planners, architects, climatologists, ecologists, geographers and other social scientists. Taking case studies from Paris, London, Berlin, Helsinki, and other leading centres, the volume examines when, why, and how green landscapes evolved in major cities, and the extent to which they have been shaped by shared external forces as well as by distinctive and specific local needs. Quantifying green space trends in this way raises important issues of classification and categorisation of the different varieties of urban green space.
