Book Draft Daze

Download or read book Draft Daze written by Nathan Frederick and published by . This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a country obsessed with reality television, the NFL Draft might be the ultimate experience, a broadcast that blends real-life drama with the rooting interests of sports fans. Grown men cry on stage. Futures are determined live, with cameras rolling and small fortunes riding on each pick. Surprises show up. And for a few days, every team - and every fan too - seems to have some semblance of hope. Since moving the first round to primetime in 2010, the NFL Draft has been averaging about 40 million viewers annually, getting better television ratings than playoff games in other sports. Here's why: There's a story behind every pick, and often a bit of controversy too. Even the personalities themselves have narratives that are better than anything a script could conjure up. ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. narrowly missed a career behind the scenes as a personnel man for his hometown Baltimore Colts. Todd McShay may have never made it to television without an injury that ended his playing career. The NFL Network's Mike Mayock was a second-generation draft pick, following a father who chose a teaching career over football. Ozzie Newsome was a Hall of Fame player who has been perhaps even better as a general manager for the Baltimore Ravens. In the NFL Draft, everyone has a story. But ultimately, I wanted my own. I went through questions on the infamous Wonderlic test, to a fantasy game where I'd amass millions, and all the way back to my beloved Cincinnati Bengals, a team notorious for bungling the draft. It was a dizzying ride through the drafts past and present, as every team turned an eye toward the future. My story, just like the 2012 NFL Draft itself, starts with the Colts. And they are on the clock...

Book Brady vs Manning

Download or read book Brady vs Manning written by Gary Myers and published by Crown. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller From Acclaimed sports journalist Gary Myers comes the definitive inside account of the greatest rivalry in NFL history Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are perhaps the two greatest quarterbacks of all time. They are living legends who have come to embody the quarterback position and shape an entire generation of the NFL. They have also been fierce rivals every step of the way, and their many epic duels have not only ranked among the best and most exciting games ever played, they have fundamentally shaped the lives of and careers of both men. But for all their shared brilliance, they are a study in contrasts. Tom is the underdog turned ultimate winner, an unheralded draft pick who went on to win a miraculous Super Bowl and become the leader of one of the NFL’s greatest dynasties. He is as firmly associated with big game brilliance as anyone who has ever played. Meanwhile Peyton was born into NFL royalty and a mountain of outsized expectations, yet somehow lived up to and exceeded all the hype, claiming virtually every passing record along his path to football immortality. The contrast in greatness—between the overachieving underdog and the crown prince of football, between postseason brilliance and statistical dominance—has served as an endless source of fascination for fans and media, and over the years as the two players have faced off again and again in classic games, the argument has only intensified. But until now, there has never been a definitive treatment of the debate that tells the real story. What do Tom and Peyton actually think of each other? What do their coaches think of them? What about teammates and opposing players? What are they like behind closed doors and in the locker room, and how does that influence their careers? How did their vastly different upbringings shape them, and how has each handled the injuries, setbacks and defeats they’ve dealt with over their careers? In this extraordinary book, veteran NFL correspondent Gary Myers tackles this subject from every angle and with unprecedented access and insight, drawing on a huge number of never-before-heard interviews with Brady and Manning, their coaches, their families, and those who have played with them and against them. The result is a remarkable collection of the most entertaining and revealing stories ever told about Peyton and Tom, from how they developed their vastly different leadership styles, to the unlikely friendship they’ve built over the years, to their respective exploits as locker room pranksters. Wildly entertaining and deeply thought-provoking, Brady vs Manning is essential reading for anyone who truly wants to understand these extraordinary players.

Book excerpt: Case Keenum has traveled one of the most unique paths in the NFL. Recruited by just one college, undrafted, and released three times, Case has overcome every obstacle to become a successful starting quarterback. In 2017, Keenum captured America’s imagination by leading the Minnesota Vikings to a 13-3 record and an NFC North title. His game-winning touchdown in the final seconds of their divisional playoff game against the Saints, the "Minneapolis Miracle," made Case part of NFL history. Keenum shares stories from every stage of his life, starting out as a ball boy for his father’s college team in West Texas, going on to win a state title in high school, and rewriting the NCAA record book at the University of Houston. A devastating knee injury almost derailed his football career, but helped him get closer to the woman who would soon become his wife. Throughout his story, Case will explain how being a Christian helped him navigate the winding path to success. No matter what obstacle has been placed in front of him, Case believes God has a plan for him. That’s why he plays football and that’s why he’s writing this book: To glorify God and to help others who face adversity in their everyday life. “Am I a football player who happens to be a Christian?” Case writes, "No, I’m a Christian who happens to be a football player. That’s my calling. That’s my defining characteristic. Once I realized that, everything else fell into place. I became a better football player and, more importantly, a better person.”

Book The Draftnik

Download or read book The Draftnik written by Drew Boylhart and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been reported that 40 million sports fans watch or listen to the NFL Draft for three days every year. For me personally, its a year round endeavor. Since 1979, my first year of involvement in the draft, it has grown and developed into its own type of cottage industry. The Draft (because of its addicting nature) has brought new revenue to the NFL. The driving force behind this new source of revenue has always been Draftniks like the late Joel Buschbaum, Mel Kiper and others like me. We are Draftniks and the unexpected affect the draft has had on us is an American story in itself. Its a story of a person creating something out of nothing and making it important (in this case) to the sports world. It's also a story about how interest in the draft was the driving force in my life, which helped me to indentify and deal with being Dyslectic.
