Book excerpt: The fifteenth century Romanian Prince Vlad III Dracula, also known as Vlad the Impaler, is one of the most fascinating personalities of medieval history. Already during his own lifetime, his true story became obscured by a veil of myths. As a result, he has been portrayed both as a bloody tyrant — who degenerated down throughout the centuries into the fictional vampire of the same name created by Bram Stoker at the end of the nineteenth century — and as a national and Christian hero who bravely fought to defend his native land and all of Europe against the invading Turkish infidels. Even in more recent historiography, the true history of Dracula has been obscured by Communist and nationalist historiography.

Book Vlad the Impaler

Book excerpt: Read Sid Jaconson's posts on the Penguin Blog Two legends of the comic book industry bring to life the story of gore and lust that inspired Dracula. Vlad the man had a devilish streak-a vicious temper, a passion for women, and a thirst for revenge. Vlad the ruler was a true devil-a relentless torturer, a brutal murderer, and a paranoid leader whose megalomania would be his own undoing. Responsible for the merciless deaths of thousands, this savage 15th century ruler earned himself the moniker Vlad the Impaler. His bloody reign struck terror into the hearts of his disciples and inspired generations of vampire myths-most famously Bram Stoker's ghoulish protagonist, Dracula. However that beloved bloodsucker doesn't hold a candle to the real-life fiend whose brutal treachery has made him immortal.

Book Dracula the Legacy of the Impaler

Download or read book Dracula the Legacy of the Impaler written by Peter Dan and published by . This book was released on 2020-04-16 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1456 the young Vlad Dracula, "The Impaler" ascends for the second time to the throne and sets out to consolidate his power through a series of gruesome retaliations against his internal and external enemies. Some of his actions reach such levels of cruelty that they will become the basis of the vampire legend. His personal physician and advisor, Yakov of Bruges, is a witness and a confessor of sorts. Yakov seeks occasionally the advice of his friend Johannes van Wesel. The discussions between Yakov and Dracula and Johannes' comments offer an intimate insight into the real Dracula's mind and soul. While visiting Romania, American psychologist, Alex Stevenson, stumbles accidentally upon evidence of the correspondence between Yakov and Johannes and helped by his guide, Tudor, starts searching for the letters. In doing so he unwittingly alerts other parties: a shadowy nationalist group known as "the Guardians" and powerful moneyed interests involved in building a Dracula theme park. Neither group is above using violence to get what they want. The letters are priceless advertising for the backers of the theme park and the nationalists want them for their own political purposes. In addition, there is also a hint of hidden treasure, so the chase is on. The letters are the link between the two storylines, and the narrative alternates between them. The story of Dracula and Yakov, based on a thorough research of the historical record, follows the Impaler's second and third reign through battles, palace plots, conspiracies, assassination attempts and political intrigue. Dracula's main rivals are the Turkish Sultan Mehmed and his scheming bisexual lover, Radu the Handsome, who is Dracula's brother. His somewhat unreliable allies are King Mathias of Hungary and his cousin, Stephen the Great, Prince of neighboring Moldavia. Dracula succeeds in defeating Mehmed's huge army using guerilla warfare, a scorched earth strategy and the discouraging macabre spectacle of the "forest of the impaled" but he loses the throne to Radu. After 12 years of exile and intrigue he succeeds in becoming ruler once more but he is assassinated shortly afterwards. Yakov takes his body to the final resting place; and his last letter reveals the location of Dracula's graveDracula comes through as a complex character, a modern man in the Middle Ages, an ambivalent and in some ways tragic figure rather than a monster. He is a great warrior and politician, who can be inspiring but is also devious, paranoid, ruthless and devoid of guilt, as well as an unhappy human being, lonely and unable of intimacy. Yakov has great compassion for him but is also aware of his dark side.Alex' search for the letters takes him to the city of Brasov, were he meets the Keeper, curator of a museum and an expert in old documents. By now he and Tudor are aware that they are followed but are not successful in shaking off their pursuers. Guided by Keeper, the trail takes them to Leuven, Belgium and then to Padua, Italy. They acquire new allies and together overcome several attempts to intimidate, harm or compromise them. After they finally find the letters, they return to Romania to uncover Dracula's grave, an important site to both of the groups that have followed them. The others are expecting them and they clash at the grave site, leading to the explosive climax.

Book excerpt: Vlad: The Last Confession is a novel about the real man behind the Bram Stoker myth. It tells of the Prince, the warrior, the lover, the torturer, the survivor and, ultimately, the hero. Dracula. A name of horror, depravity and the darkest sensuality. Yet the real Dracula was just as alluring, just as terrifying, his tale not one of a monster but of a man...and a contradiction. His tale is told by those who knew him best. The only woman he ever loved...and whom he has to sacrifice. His closest comrade... and traitor. And his priest, betraying the secrets of the confessional to reveal the mind of the man history would forever remember as The Impaler. This is the story of the man behind the legend ... as it has never been told before. "Trust nothing that you've heard." Winter 1431, a son is born to the Prince of Transylvania. His father christened him "Vlad." His people knew him as "The Dragon's Son." His enemies reviled him as "Tepes"—The Impaler. He became the hero of a nation. We know him as Dracula.

Book excerpt: Who was the real man who inspired the Dracula legend? In spring 1460, a contemporary wrote, 'untold abuses, damage hardly reparable, sad murders, mutilations, sorrows' were visited upon the city of Brasov, by 'the unfaithful cruel tyrant Dracula, who calls himself Vlad, prince ... He did this following the teaching of the Devil'. According to legend, he impaled his victims, then sat at table mopping up their blood from his plate; later he hung the still alive bodies of opposing forces on a field of stakes. So began the history of Vlad the Impaler. But were his actions the righteous defence of a kingdom, an act of vengence for the cruel deaths of his father and brother? Or the unspeakable fury of a madman with a taste for blood? Here, M.J. Trow reveals the real man whose name gave birth to a legend. He explores the terror with which the character was once associated, going backwards in time from the celluloid Count of Hammer and Universal Studios to the literary creations of Bram Stoker, Sheridan le Fanu and John Polidori. This book also looks at Vlad from the many facets he has left to history - the Impaler; the Renaissance prince 'more sinned against than sinning' whose reputation was destroyed by his enemies; the hero on a white horse, who welded Wallachia into a fighting and defiant nation-state; the defeated martyr, captured by the Hungarian king Corvinus. A stylishly written and compelling narrative, this book unravels the true story behind the image, and takes us into the heart of the bloody, uncertain world of medieval Europe. M.J. TROW is a crime novelist and historian. His previous books include Boudicca and Who Killed Kit Marlowe?

Book excerpt: Most of the vast audience attracted to the subject of Dracula know him only in his fictional, one-dimensional form: vampire! Yet the truth behind the historical character--voevode, warlord--of 15th C. Romania is at least as equally fascinating as any contrived account of his supernatural persona. Vlad Dracula faithfully follows his life story as hostage, fugitive, prince, and prisoner, as well as his legend. His principality of Wallachia was caught between two voracious predators: the kingdom of Hungary and the Ottoman empire. They tried to break Dracula with overwhelming force and terror. But Dracula turned their own tactics against them, and against criminals and factions in his own land, earning the name Tepes--The Impaler--in the process. He was a strange mix of husband, father, soldier, statesman, and berserker. He annihilated 50,000 people--one-tenth of his own population. Cursed by his native Orthodox Christian Church, he indeed evolved into a legend. But even today he is Romania's Robin Hood.

Based on research in the archives and libraries of Budapest, Dubrovnik, Genoa, Mantua, Milan, Modena, Munich, Rome, Venice and Vienna, the book focuses on the conflictive medieval, and modern images created by the clash between the classical pictures of Vlad and the still preserved coeval sources.
