Download or read book In the Footsteps of Dracula written by Stephen Jones and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than thirty chilling stories and novellas featuring Bram Stoker’s King of the Vampires: Count Dracula, Prince of Darkness! Since his creation one hundred and twenty years ago, the name of Dracula has become synonymous with the legend of the vampire and the character is one of the world’s most iconic to appear in fiction and film. Now, this history of the blood-drinking nobleman follows Dracula from his origins in Transylvania, through his travels down the decades, into a dystopian twenty-first century where vampires rule the world. Is it possible that the Count’s condition can be cured by modern medicine? How does the mythology perpetuated by literature and movies affect the existence of a real bloodsucker? How can an immortal creature adapt to the social and technological changes that have already shaped our modern world? And what happens when Dracula turns up for his own birthday party? These and many other questions are answered by acclaimed authors such as Ramsey Campbell, Christopher Fowler, Charlaine Harris, Nancy Holder, Nancy Kilpatrick, Brian Lumley, Graham Masterton, Paul McAuley, Kim Newman, Michael Marshall Smith, F. Paul Wilson and many others, including Dracula’s original creator Bram Stoker with a long-lost version of the story first presented in 1897.

  • Publisher : Abrams
  • Release : 2017-02-07
  • ISBN : 1468313371
  • Pages : 487 pages

Download or read book Powers of Darkness written by Bram Stoker and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2017-02-07 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Powers of Darkness is an incredible literary discovery: In 1900, Icelandic publisher and writer Valdimar à?smundsson set out to translate Bram Stoker’s world-famous 1897 novel Dracula. Called Makt Myrkranna (literally, “Powers of Darkness†?), this Icelandic edition included an original preface written by Stoker himself. Makt Myrkranna was published in Iceland in 1901 but remained undiscovered outside of the country until 1986, when Dracula scholarship was astonished by the discovery of Stoker’s preface to the book. However, no one looked beyond the preface and deeper into à?smundsson’s story. In 2014, literary researcher Hans de Roos dove into the full text of Makt Myrkranna, only to discover that à?smundsson hadn’t merely translated Dracula but had penned an entirely new version of the story, with all new characters and a totally re-worked plot. The resulting narrative is one that is shorter, punchier, more erotic, and perhaps even more suspenseful than Stoker’s Dracula. Incredibly, Makt Myrkranna has never been translated or even read outside of Iceland until now.Powers of Darkness presents the first ever translation into English of Stoker and à?smundsson’s Makt Myrkranna. With marginal annotations by de Roos providing readers with fascinating historical, cultural, and literary context; a foreword by Dacre Stoker, Bram Stoker’s great-grandnephew and bestselling author; and an afterword by Dracula scholar John Edgar Browning, Powers of Darkness will amaze and entertain legions of fans of Gothic literature, horror, and vampire fiction.

Book The Role of Sexuality in the British Vampire Films by Hammer

Download or read book The Role of Sexuality in the British Vampire Films by Hammer written by Roman Büttner and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,6, University of Marburg (Institut f r Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Blood, Lust, and (Un)death: Vampires in American and British Cultures, 10 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Terence Fisher's masterpiece was his 1958 movie version of Bram Stoker's Dracula, starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. With the huge success of that film, Fisher and Hammer Films started a whole new era of horror movies. Other Dracula films were to follow. Vampirism has traditionally been associated with lust and sexuality, which becomes clear in various modern vampire movies. But this is rather an exception because the film history of blood suckers demonstrates that, when times were different, vampires were depicted differently, too. In Fisher's films, sexuality began to play a bigger role in the genre than ever before and became the key to success of each and every vampire film made by Hammer. Using two of the early Hammer movies, Dracula (1958) and its sequel Dracula, Prince of Darkness (1966), this paper will not only present the necessary historical background that made it all possible but will also analyze these movies with regard to the role of sexuality in them.

Download or read book Terence Fisher written by Paul Leggett and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some critics in England and France have long maintained that British director Terence Fisher, whose films dominated world markets in the 1950s and 60s, was one of the greatest directors of fantasy films in history. Since his death in 1980, Fisher's reputation has grown from relative obscurity and his influence on the development of the modern horror film has been widely recognized. However, Fisher's importance should not be limited to the context of the fantasy and horror film genres. His films should also be recognized as expressions of his generalizations about human spirituality. This critical study of Fisher's films begins with an introduction that provides biographical information on his film career, summaries of all of the films he directed and examples of his impact on contemporary cinema. All of Fisher's films are analyzed in terms of their Christian and religious themes as well as their mythical sources. Chapters are devoted to Fisher's work on the subjects of Frankenstein, Dracula, curses (The Devil Rides Out), the ancient goddess (The Gorgon), the divided self (The Man Who Could Cheat Death) and the redeemer hero (The Stranglers of Bombay). The concluding chapter analyzes the role and influence of Biblical narratives in Fisher's films. Also included is a filmography; the work is fully indexed.

Tod Browning, MGM's famed director of the macbre genre for the studio, had left and signed a contract back at his home studio, Universal. Carl Laemmle Jr was made production head of Universal for his father and he wanted to do a film version of Dracula. Carl Sr. agreed, as long as they had Lon Chaney as the star. Early in August of 1930, Carl Junior, still attempting to sign Chaney for the role, ordered a treatment to be authored by Louis Bromfield. We have also included a complete Title list from this version. Also included in this volume is a translated version of F.W. Book Count Dracula Goes to the Movies

Download or read book Count Dracula Goes to the Movies written by Lyndon W. Joslin and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-04-13 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1897, Bram Stoker's Dracula has never been out of print. Yet most people are familiar with the title character from the movies. Count Dracula is one of the most-filmed literary characters in history--but has he (or Stoker's novel) ever been filmed accurately? In its third edition, this study focuses on 18 adaptations of Dracula from 1922 to 2012, comparing them to the novel and to each other. Fidelity to the novel does not always guarantee a good movie, while some of the better films are among the more freely adapted. The Universal and Hammer sequels are searched for traces of Stoker, along with several other films that borrow from the novel. The author concludes with a brief look at four latter-day projects that are best dismissed or viewed for ironic laughs.
