Her uncle takes Kate to the Moravian town of Bethlehem, where he thinks she will be safe during the fall of 1775. While staying in Bethlehem, Kate tries to understand the Moravians' love of peace and their friendship with all people, friends and enemies alike. But her hatred of Indians grows as she watches the endless stream of frightened refugees come to the town for shelter from Delaware and Shawnee raids in the French and Indian War. Word reaches Bethlehem that the Indians plan to attack the town on Christmas Eve. Kate wonders at the peace-loving Moravians, who calmly go about their work and continue their plans for the Christmas surprise for the children. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tiny Tim is all grown up in this continuation of Charles Dickens’s beloved holiday classic A Christmas Carol, and this time, a certain ghost shows him the true meaning of Christmas cheer! In A Christmas Carol, evil Scrooge was shown the error of his ways by three helpful ghosts and vowed to become a better person. Bob Cratchit and his family benefited most from Scrooge’s change of tune—but what happened after the goose was given, and Scrooge resolved to turn over a new leaf? Tim Cratchit’s Christmas Carol shows us Tiny Tim as an adult. Having recovered from his childhood ailment, he began his career helping the poor but has since taken up practice as a doctor to London’s wealthy elite. Though Tim leads a very successful life, he comes home at night to an empty house. But this holiday season, he’s determined to fill his house with holiday cheer—and maybe even a wife. When a single, determined young mother lands on Tim’s doorstep with her ailing son, Tim is faced with a choice: stay ensconced in his comfortable life and secure doctor’s practice, or take a leap of faith and reignite the fire lit under him by his mentor, Scrooge, that fateful Christmas so many years ago.

Yet despite the abundance of these Christian references in popular culture, how many of us have examined the hard edges of this biblical story? In his new book Timothy Keller takes readers on an illuminating journey into the surprising background of the nativity. By understanding the message of hope and salvation within the Bible’s account of Jesus’ birth, readers will experience the redeeming power of God’s grace in a deeper and more meaningful way.

Book excerpt: Outspoken playwright Liza Weiler left Yale with everything she thought she needed to make her mark on the New York stage. So why, nearly a decade later, is she still waiting for her “real” life to finally begin? But like any great drama, Liza’s life only needs one good twist. And that’s what happens when she turns her ankle on the way out of a downtown nightspot and falls into the arms of a suspiciously gallant Wall Street prince and a practically perfect ER doc. Suddenly Liza not only has a couple of men in her life, but her play has fallen into the hands of a über-hip theater director. Now Liza’s about to discover how much mess she can make of a seemingly good thing…and how terrifying, slightly tragic, and utterly hilarious a little success can be.

Book David Ives A Story of St Timothy s

Download or read book David Ives A Story of St Timothy s written by Arthur Stanwood Pier and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The suburb in which David Ives lived and in which David’s father had most of his medical practice was by no means one of the wealthy and prosperous suburbs of the wealthy and prosperous city. It was a new and raw-looking region; many of the streets were unpaved, littered and weed-grown; and unfenced lots and two-family tenement houses were alike its characteristics; there were numerous billboards along the sidewalks; the trees were few in number and had grown half-heartedly. But David, returning from the baseball field on a hot July afternoon, saw nothing depressing in the neighborhood. He walked with his coat flung over his shoulder and his cap in his hand. He had distinguished himself at the bat; he was thirsty and thinking of the cold ginger ale he would drink; he was hungry and thinking of the raspberries he would eat; he was pleasantly tired and thinking of an evening to be passed in comfort and interest over “David Copperfield.” A gust of wind flung dirt and dust into his face and made him wonder why the watering-carts so seldom visited Rosewood,—for such was the misleading name of the suburb,—but the next moment he turned into a more shaded and attractive street and forgot his displeasure in the satisfaction of drawing near his home. He passed the Carters’ bungalow and the Porters’ Queen Anne cottage and the Jennisons’ mansard dwelling, and then he turned up the flagstone walk that led between two narrow bits of lawn to his father’s door. The house was square and gray and shabby; there was a room thrown out at one end of the wide front porch, and over the door that admitted to this room hung a lantern bearing the words, “Dr. Ives.” The door and the window were both open, and just before passing into the front hall David had a glimpse of his father seated at his desk in a characteristic attitude, with his gray head resting on his hand while an invisible patient recited her symptoms. That the patient was a woman David knew, because he heard the querulous drone of her voice—it was just the drone that he associated with his father’s numerous charity cases.

Book excerpt: For too long the author considered himself a writer of racing fiction. It is a neglected market, with good reason. No fictional account, and certainly not the tawdry thrillers which constitute the niche genre, can ever come close to replicating the reality of the sport. Horse racing is the quintessence of drama, the story unfolding daily from every corner of the country, with guest appearances from Ireland, France and other countries when the sport here must draw breath. The cast of these short stories is drawn from all the cardinal points of society, from the aristocracy to rough diamonds, from the glamorous to the mucky boots of stable yards, to people who are quite simply the best human life can aspire to. And then there are the horses, the true stars, the species racing people put on a pedestal. Horse racing is tragedy and comedy. It is everything Shakespeare aspired to. In stories which embrace most strands of storytelling Going to the Last: Stories of Horses and Racing is a brave but foolhardy attempt to reflect the beautiful truth of a remarkable sport.
