This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dr. Newman and His Religious Opinions I cannot, however, dismiss the Eirenikon without adding a few further remarks. Dr. Pusey dedicates a postscript of some fifty pages to expose the fallacy of the doctrine of the personal infallibility of the Bishop of Rome for the time being, a doctrine which, he states, is now being seriously advocated 3 the Gallican Church, according to the Dublin Review, having now withdrawn all their former opposition to the doctrine. What he has written on this subject is sound, as far as it goes. But Dr. Pusey holds to the infallibility of the Church, which may mean anything to suit the moment, and must lead to the most intolerant sentiments; for, of course, he must set up his own standard as the measure of orthodoxy of the church which he alleges to be infallible. Newman's Religious Opinions Our controversy with Romanists turns more upon facts the very force of the word corruption implies this to be the peculiarity of Romanism. All error indeed, of whatever kind, may be called a corruption of truth still, we properly apply the term to such kinds of error as are not denials but perver sions, distortions, or excesses of it. Such is the relation of Romanism towards Catholicity. It is the misdirection and abuse, not the absence of right principle. - P. 51. See Novelties of Romanism (religious Tract Society), wherein the dates and circumstances of the introduction of every doctrine and custom of the Roman Church are given by me. We Anglicans do not profess a different religion from the Romanists; we profess their faith all but their corruptions. Book A Review of Dr Newman s

Download or read book A Review of Dr Newman s written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Review of Dr. Newman's: Apologia Pro Vita Sua From an early age, up to the period when he became a Roman Catholic Priest, Dr. Newman appears to have been the passive victim of many fortuitous influences, and as many transitory impressions; all of them from sources, purely human. At fourteen years of age, he read Paine's Tracts against the Old Testament; some of Hume's Essays, and copied some French verses against the immortality of the soul. He appears to have been struck with the plausibility of some of those writings, but was not biassed by them. At fifteen "a great change of thought took place in him. He fell under the influence of a definite Creed, and received into his intellect, impressions of dogma." Those intellectual impressions were not received from a study and meditation of the Word of God, but from some works, "all from the School of Calvin." From one of Mr. Romaine's works, Dr. Newman "received at once, the doctrine of final perseverance." Dr. Newman soon abandoned "the detestable doctrine" of election and final perseverance; not from any light he had received from the Scriptures, but from the works of "the writer who made a deeper impression on his mind than any other - Thomas Scott, of Aston Sandford who planted deep in his mind, that fundamental Truth of religion" - belief in the Holy Trinity. In the autumn of 1816, Dr. Newman received another "deep impression." Not from reading the Word of God, "but from two other works, each contrary to each, and planting in him, the seeds of an intellectual inconsistency, which disabled him for a long course of years." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apologia Pro Vita Sua It was in the number for January 1864, of a magazine of wide circulation, and in an article upon Queen Elizabeth, that a popular writer took occasion formally to accuse me by name of thinking so lightly of the virtue of Veracity, as in set terms to have countenanced and defended that neglect of it which he at the same time imputed to the Catholic Priesthood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cardinal Newman: And His Influence on Religious Life and Thought Considering the wonderful vitality of Newman's influence, it is hardly necessary to justify ourselves for adding one more book to an already voluminous literature. We feel all the less embarrassed because each of our predecessors, with the single exception of M. Bremond, has only given us one particular aspect of Newman, and because no one can flatter himself with having given us the final portrait. Precisely because Newman continues to be a living force, every interpreter - Protestant, Catholic, Anglican, or sceptic - seeks in his works that interpretation which is most favourable to his own tendencies. And that is also the reason why few thinkers have appeared under so many and varied aspects and passed through so many changes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dr. Newman's "Dream of Gerontius" At the same time, Dr. Lorinzer's knowledge of his subject is so profound, and his appreciation of his favourite author so keen, that for me, who am almost entirely unacquainted with this branch of literature, formally to oppose his views, would be an act of presumption of which I am, as I tfust, incapable. I may, however, perhaps be permitted to observe, that with regard to the few pieces of this kind which in an English dress I have read, whilst I think them not only most ingenious but also surprisingly beautiful, they do not strike me as incomprehensible at all.
