Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dr. Neesen's Book on Wheeling: Hints and Advice to Men and Women From the Physician's Standpoint Medical authorities, with few exceptions, agree that bicycling is an excellent form of exercise. Some claim that it is general in its efiects, others that certain parts of the body only are developed, and the exceptions hold that it is detrimental to the health in toto and ought never to be in dulged, except after consultation with a physician. Of course it all depends on the point of View. Each one is right in a way. It is a general exer cise if followed in the proper manner. It is a Special exercise if pursued in the wrong way. It is distinctly detrimental to those who have cer tain physical defects, who assume hurtful posi tions, or who injudiciously ignore the limit of their physical powers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dr. Neesen's Book on Wheeling: Hints and Advice to Men and Women From the Physician's Standpoint I have recently met with several cases of sickness produced by bicycle riding. And I have recently read a few magazine articles on the dangers of bicycling. And I have all along, ever since wheeling became popular, observed so many people of both sexes who did not derive benefit from their exercise, because of a lack of knowledge of the correct method of riding, that I am constrained to take up my pen, with much diffidence, and endeavor to show those who do not ride properly wherein lies their fault; to explain to those who suffer bad effects from wheeling how to pursue this captivating sport with profit to their health; and to satisfy those who have eschewred the pleasure which all their friends are enjoying, because of the doubt whether it is good for them, - that wheeling, when properly indulged, is the grandest institution of the nineteenth century. Download or read book Revolutions written by Hannah Ross and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history and celebration of women's cycling—beginning with its origins as a political statement, beloved pastime, and early feminist act—that shares the stories of notable cyclists and groups around the world More than a century after they first entered the mainstream, bicycles and the culture around them are as accessible as ever—but for women, that progress has always been a struggle to achieve, and even now the culture remains overwhelmingly male. In Revolutions, author Hannah Ross highlights the stories of extraordinary women cyclists and all-female cycling groups over time and around the world, and demonstrates both the feminist power of cycling and its present-day issues. A cyclist herself, Ross puts a spotlight on the many incredible women and girls on bicycles from then to now—many of whom had to endure great opposition to do so, beginning in the 1880s, when the first women began setting distance records, racing competitively, and using bicycles to spread the word about women’s suffrage. Revolutions also celebrates women setting records and demanding equality in competitive cycling, as well as cyclists in countries including Afghanistan, India, and Saudi Arabia who are inspiring women to take up space on the road, trails, and elsewhere. Both a history of women's cycling and an impassioned manifesto, Revolutions challenges a male-dominated narrative that has long prevailed in cycling and celebrates the excellence of women in the culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before journalist George Plimpton donned shoulder pads for Paper Lion, sportswriters were stepping onto the field, arena, track and ring. This first-of-its-kind anthology of participatory sportswriting collects 48 pieces from the Gilded and Golden Age greats. Charles Dickens, Robert Louis Stevenson, Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain, Walt Whitman, Frances Elizabeth Willard, John Muir, Jack London, Zane Grey, Ernest Hemingway, Ring Lardner, Bill Tilden, Bobby Jones, Helen Mills, Paul Gallico, and many more prowled America's sporting grounds with pen in hand in a time when, as Grantland Rice put it, "a flame...lit up the sporting skies and covered the world."
