H.A.I.’s manner of marking the Bible is a fascinating study in itself. Here and there, he has noted some of the great themes of the Bible, which signified the power and effectiveness of his preaching. But perhaps the richest of the treasure is the reading of his choice comments scattered over some fifteen hundred pages of Scripture, as written by him in the margins. This volume contains selections from the many marginal notes found in each of the Books of the great expositor’s old Bible. Book excerpt: IT is certainly cause for deep regret that to so many Christians the Book of Revelation seems to be what God never intended it should be-a sealed book. The book of Daniel was to be sealed till the time of the end (Dan. 12:9), but of Revelation it is written: "Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand" (Chap. 22:10). It is clearly evident that this portion of Holy Scripture was given for our instruction and edification, but thousands of the Lord's people permit themselves to be robbed of blessing by ignoring it. Significantly enough, it is the one book of the Bible which begins and ends with a blessing pronounced on those who read and keep what is written therein (Chap. 1:3; 22:7). Surely God did not mean to mock us by promising a blessing on all who keep what they cannot hope to understand! It is only unbelief that would so reason. Faith delights to appropriate every part of the sacred record, and finds that "they are all clear to him that understandeth." The true title is given us in the opening verse. It is, "The Revelation of Jesus Christ;" not "The Revelation of St. John the Divine." There is no MS. authority for this latter designation, and it shows all too plainly how far some early editor had slipped away from first principles. John was a saint as all believers are saints. He was not a divine! Such a title would have amazed him beyond measure. Nor is the book the revelation of John or of any other servant of God. It is the revelation of Jesus Christ Himself. The word rendered "revelation," and sometimes "apocalypse," means literally an unveiling, or manifestation. So this book is the unveiling of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is its one great theme. It presents Him as the Son of Man in the midst of the churches during the present dispensation; and as the Judge and the King in the dispensations to come. If you would learn to appreciate Christ more, read this book, frequently and prayerfully. It reveals Him as the Lamb rejected, soon to reign in glory-the Lamb on the throne!

Every doctrine of the Christian faith has its conclusion or culmination in that future which is the burden of Biblical prophecy. An ignorance of this prophecy, or any perversion of it, seriously affects one’s concept of the pure faith. It is for this reason, therefore, that a clear Biblical expression concerning prophecy is necessary. Especially is it needed because confusion is increasing among Christians with regard to trustworthy teaching of prophecy, leading, as is usual in such cases, to lessened certainty in testimony and to decreased evangelistic zeal in winning the lost to Christ. With a view to rendering service to the Lord Jesus Christ and His Church, a group of believers, assisted or counselled by many well-known and trusted Bible teachers, decided to call a conference on the Christian faith in its relation to prophecy. Because of its wide capacity organizationally, its peculiar fitness to promote such a conference, and its ability to distribute benefits derived therefrom, the sponsorship rested with the American Board of Missions to the Jews. Under the direction of its energetic and capable secretary, Dr. Joseph Hoffman Cohn, the program for a Congress on Prophecy was carefully arranged and it was carried out in the Calvary Baptist Church, New York City, November 1-8, 1942.

Book excerpt: TO the general reader, the book of Proverbs, with its common-sense epigrams and sententious aphorisms, might seem to be the last portion of Scripture requiring any attempt at elucidation. But it is just because its chapters abound in pithy truisms that the marrow is often lost sight of by those who have been accustomed to hearing or reading them all their lives. The present work is an attempt to press home upon the heart and conscience, with a view to the increase of every-day godliness, this distinctively practical portion of the word of God. The "Authorized" Version is used in the text, save where a uniform rendering of certain words seemed conducive to clearness, and where some other translation better expressed the thought of the original. Wherever changes have been made, the reader may rest assured competent authorities have been consulted, the marginal readings of the Englishman's Hebrew Bible being generally preferred. The poetical arrangement has been used, as more capable of clearly manifesting the contrasts, as well as the parallelisms, so abundant in this great storehouse of practical instruction. Throughout, an effort has been made to bring to the reader's attention some Scriptural examples of the proverbial statements. This feature of the work will, it is sincerely hoped, be a means of stimulating the reader to more careful, earnest Bible study. H. A. IRONSIDE. August 1, 1907.
