Book Dr H F C Cleghorn Founder of Forest Conservancy in India

Download or read book Dr H F C Cleghorn Founder of Forest Conservancy in India written by Subbarayalu and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the advent of British rule, there was unprecedented pressure on the forests for commercial exploitation. This led to their denudation, which in turn caused the silting of rivers, resulting in poor flow of water, leading to famine. Among the East India Company Surgeons there were some who were ardent nature lovers and who showed keen interest in the preservation of natural wealth. This book is a tribute to one of those veteran Surgeons, Dr. H. F. C. Cleghorn, who was instrumental in introducing Forest Conservation not only in South India, but also in the Punjab, and all over the Indian Empire. Dr. Cleghorn was under the East India Company serving as military Surgeon in the Madras Presidency. For his pioneering works, Dr. Cleghorn was conferred the title ‘The Founder of Forest Conservancy in India’. He retired in 1869 and returned to Scotland. There again, he ensured that an exclusive course in Forestry was included in the Syllabi of the University of Edinburgh, and he also got involved in the selection of personnel for Indian Forest Service. His collection of plant drawings and books finds a place in Royal Botanical Garden Edinburgh. This book is a deep narrative on how Dr. Cleghorn organized Forest Conservancy on an all India basis and how he got people like R. H. Beddome, the Naturalist, to work with him. His association with the formation of botanical gardens at Lal Bagh, Bangalore, and Udhagamandalam, are interestingly captured.

Book excerpt: Like to walk through one of the hathivanas (elephant forests) maintained by Mauryan king Chandragupta? Wish to be part of the royal dinner of a Mughal Emperor, with the palate containing a variety of forty meat dishes? Desirous of having a glimpse of the head on the shield and full-mount trophies of tigers and lions, decorating the halls and walls of the military lounges, lavish palaces and royal houses of the British Raj? Conservation Conundrum - Journey of India’s wildlife through ages is a pen-picture of the glory and good times, the trials and tribulations, persecution and perturbation of the country’s wild animals in its recorded history. The author has captured the theme through a historian’s kaleidoscope, where from a period of plenty in the ancient India, animal numbers plummeted to its lowest, when the country was into its first two decades of independence. From a situation of no-hope, how most of the iconic wildlife species registered a turn around and smart recovery in a span of half a century, despite the odds working against them forms the central thread. The author takes the reader through the pages in finding an answer to the usual dilemma, as to whether it is human need and interest or the future of the wild denizens that is important to a developing nation like India.

Book The Indian Forest Act 1927 and Forests in India

Download or read book The Indian Forest Act 1927 and Forests in India written by Ashutosh Samant Singhar and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2022-01-06 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India’s forest area has come down below one fifth of total geographical area, due to indiscriminate alienation of forest land for non-forestry purposes and deforestation leading to rapid loss in biodiversity and forest natural resources. An outdated Indian Forest Act, 1927, the most important legal instrument for forest management and administration, with a colonial mindset, influenced by Locke and monetization of forest resources for financial profiteering by the British colonial administration, has been found to be inadequate for conservation of valuable forest environment and resources and alienated local stakeholders in natural resource management. Higher judiciary has started intervening by issuing several judgements and orders, keeping in tune recent developments in the field of international environment law, to save forest land and forest resources, in absence of a strong legal frame work. Global initiatives for conservation of natural resources and mitigation of damaging effects of Climate Change, Sustainable Development Goals etc. have catalysed swift action on part of the government and other stake holders towards achieving conservation goals. A paradigm shift in the system for forest conservation and management, supported by a new law, based on sound scientific forestry, such as landscape level management etc. is the need of the hour.
