Book excerpt: Films have been an integral part of my life. My first childhood trip to a theater was to see "Lassie Come Home", during which - I've been told-I yelled out "Let that dog go, you mean men!" I've watched the Oscars sporadically; not so much lately. My wife Pat, however, is an ardent watcher and this book is inspired by her. Moreover, she has been the main auditory guinea pig for the puns in this and my prior two books. The format is a selected list of Best Film nominees over the years with two puns accompanying each, chosen to match the film's title and-occasionally-its content. About originality: I have very good recall; as far as I know, each pun in this book (and my other two pun books) is "original" in the sense that I haven't heard or read any of them before. (The two exceptions are prominently asterisked.) However, given a couple of billion English speakers in the world, it is debatable that no one, nowhere, could have had the same thought as I did.About delectability: puns, in my experience, are most easily digested if read sparsely, no more than two a day. Gluttons beware! If you don't "get" a pun, try saying it out loud. (You can practice on some of the attributions at the end of this preface.)

Book excerpt: In 1932, The Mummy, starring Boris Karloff, introduced another icon to the classic monster pantheon, beginning a journey down the cinematic Nile that has yet to reach its end. Over the past century, movie mummies have met everyone from Abbott and Costello to Tom Cruise, not to mention a myriad of fellow monsters. Horrifying and mysterious, the mummy comes from a different time with uncommon knowledge and unique motivation, offering the lure of the exotic as well as the terrors of the dark. From obscure no-budgeters to Hollywood blockbusters, the mummy has featured in films from all over the globe, including Brazil, China, France, Hong Kong, India, Mexico, and even its fictional home country of Egypt--with each film bringing its own cultural sensibilities. Movie mummies have taken the form of teenagers, superheroes, dwarves, kung fu fighters, Satanists, cannibals and even mummies from outer space. Some can fly, some are sexy, some are scary and some are hilarious, and mummies quickly moved beyond horror cinema and into science fiction, comedy, romance, sexploitation and cartoons. From the Universal classics to the Aztec Mummy series, from Hammer's versions to Mexico's Guanajuato variations, this first-ever comprehensive guide to mummy movies offers in-depth production histories and critical analyses for every feature-length iteration of bandaged horror.

Book The Biology of Science Fiction Cinema

Download or read book The Biology of Science Fiction Cinema written by Mark C. Glassy and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2006-01-12 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science fiction films of the 1930s and 1940s were often set in dark laboratories that had strange looking glass containers with bubbling fluids and mad scientists conducting glandular and hormonal experiments. In the 1950s, films were more focused on radiation induced mutations. The 1960s and 1970s brought more sophisticated biological sciences to the movies and focused on such relatively new concepts as immunology, cyrobiology, and biochemistry. In the 1980s and 1990s, the focus of science fiction films has been DNA. This work of film criticism relates 71 science fiction films to the biological sciences. The author covers cell biology, pharmacology, endocrinology, hematology, and entomology, to name just a few topics. An analysis of each film includes a brief plot synopsis, the author's favorite quotations, the biological principles involved, the accuracy of the laboratory, and correct and incorrect biological information. In his analyses, the author sets out what would be required to achieve in real life the results seen in the movies and whether these experiments or events could actually happen.

Book Women in the Horror Films of Vincent Price

Download or read book Women in the Horror Films of Vincent Price written by Jonathan Malcolm Lampley and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the key films in the career of horror icon Vincent Price (1911-1993) contain commentaries both obvious and subtle on the role of women, not only in the context of the times in which the films were created, but also during the historical periods depicted in the storylines. This examination of Price's horror films focuses on how the principal female characters--portrayed by such notable actresses as Barbara Steele, Hazel Court and Diana Rigg, to name but a few--are simultaneously villains, victims and objects of veneration. Also considered are issues of gender and sexuality as addressed in Vincent Price's most memorable movies. Included are dozens of rare production stills and a selected filmography that provides significant background information on the films cited.

Book Why Popcorn Costs So Much at the Movies

Download or read book Why Popcorn Costs So Much at the Movies written by Richard B. McKenzie and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-04-17 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This entertaining book seeks to unravel an array of pricing puzzles from the one captured in the book’s title to why so many prices end with "9" (as in $2.99 or $179). Along the way, the author explains how the 9/11 terrorists have, through the effects of their heinous acts on the relative prices of various modes of travel, killed more Americans since 9/11 than they killed that fateful day. He also explains how well-meaning efforts to spur the use of alternative, supposedly environmentally friendly fuels have starved millions of people around the world and given rise to the deforestation of rainforests in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Book excerpt: It: Chapter Two—now a major motion picture! Stephen King’s terrifying, classic #1 New York Times bestseller, “a landmark in American literature” (Chicago Sun-Times)—about seven adults who return to their hometown to confront a nightmare they had first stumbled on as teenagers…an evil without a name: It. Welcome to Derry, Maine. It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made twenty-eight years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children. Now, children are being murdered again and their repressed memories of that terrifying summer return as they prepare to once again battle the monster lurking in Derry’s sewers. Readers of Stephen King know that Derry, Maine, is a place with a deep, dark hold on the author. It reappears in many of his books, including Bag of Bones, Hearts in Atlantis, and 11/22/63. But it all starts with It. “Stephen King’s most mature work” (St. Petersburg Times), “It will overwhelm you…to be read in a well-lit room only” (Los Angeles Times).
