Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This saga of war and family from a New York Times–bestselling author is “sheer, wonderful storytelling” (Chicago Tribune). Spanning six decades, these three novels follow a man and his family as they struggle to adapt to life in a new world. From the death of Queen Victoria through the swinging sixties, this acclaimed saga is an unforgettable story of a farming family and a vanishing way of life. Long Summer Day: Lt. Paul Craddock returns to England after the Boer War to resume civilian life. His father has died, leaving Craddock heir to a scrap-metal business. But instead of continuing the family business, he purchases an auctioned-off thirteen-hundred-acre estate, Shallowford, where he will be changed by his love for two women: fiercely independent Grace Lovell and lovely, demure Claire Derwent. Post of Honour: Through hard work and love of the land, Craddock has transformed his sprawling estate and enjoys a peaceful country life with his wife and three children. But war has begun its inevitable march across England, and this remote corner of Devon cannot escape its destruction. As the Great War ends and another threatens to erupt, Craddock’s faith and the strength he derives from his family must sustain him and his village through trying, tumultuous times. The Green Gauntlet: Though Craddock’s village has endured despite the sorrows of war, he has new perils to face. Emerging property laws threaten his livelihood, dividing his family over the future of his beloved Shallowford. For his sons and daughter, the fifties and sixties will be a time of discovery and change that will resonate in the lives of their own children.

Book My Louisiana Rose Miss Billie Marie Ferry

This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Billie Marie Ferry was born in 1871 and died in 1984, dying just seven days shy of her 113th birthday. She was the youngest of seven and the only girl. She lived in the elegant Oak Alley plantation in Vacherie, Louisiana, the sugarcane plantation that her father built. She loved watching Oak Alley thrive, as her brothers, nephews, and sons oversaw it. She was separated from her family in an orphanage, not reuniting with them until she was six years old. Billie had two marriages, five children with one dying at birth, and volunteered a lifetime of civic missions. She made friends with former slaves, went to college, worked at the Red Cross during both world wars, and watched as five generations of her family matured into upstanding members of society. Billie tells of her first car ride, struggling to make ends meet during the Depression, living through the Korean War and the Vietnam War, and finally succumbing to using a wheelchair at 102. Billie walked for women’s rights in her youth and gave an address opposing abortion at the age of 110. When the end came, she was ready for it. Her story is about a legendary family led by a woman.

Book Dr Chuckle s Original Cinema

Download or read book Dr Chuckle s Original Cinema written by Paul Frishkoff and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Films have been an integral part of my life. My first childhood trip to a theater was to see "Lassie Come Home", during which - I've been told-I yelled out "Let that dog go, you mean men!" I've watched the Oscars sporadically; not so much lately. My wife Pat, however, is an ardent watcher and this book is inspired by her. Moreover, she has been the main auditory guinea pig for the puns in this and my prior two books. The format is a selected list of Best Film nominees over the years with two puns accompanying each, chosen to match the film's title and-occasionally-its content. About originality: I have very good recall; as far as I know, each pun in this book (and my other two pun books) is "original" in the sense that I haven't heard or read any of them before. (The two exceptions are prominently asterisked.) However, given a couple of billion English speakers in the world, it is debatable that no one, nowhere, could have had the same thought as I did.About delectability: puns, in my experience, are most easily digested if read sparsely, no more than two a day. Gluttons beware! If you don't "get" a pun, try saying it out loud. (You can practice on some of the attributions at the end of this preface.)

Book excerpt: A riches to rags cowboy. A hardened cowgirl. The gunshot that erases all doubt. Laura Warner knows nothing but horses. Her entire life has been lived on a ranch. It’s her love, her dream, and aside from the love of her life, Quentin, it’s the only thing that she ever thinks about. But when tragedy strikes at Kelsey Ranch, Laura is left to care for the horses and the land with the help of her siblings. Years later, Laura feels content with life, but when a gunshot blasts only days after she has to make a difficult decision, Laura learns that everything happens for a reason…and it doesn’t always lead to more hardship…sometimes it leads to happiness. But can she convince herself that this is possible? Grayson Thomas is an out of work lowlife, who just happens to have world class siblings that drag him out of his rut days after he loses everything, or gives everything up, depending on one’s perspective. When he makes the decision to flee from El Paso and move to Huttonville, just outside of Dallas, his brothers give him their thumbs up. Grayson has no idea that he’s about to step into the world that he does, and when a gunshot blasts on his second day in Huttonville, he’s left wondering if he should make tire tracks back to El Paso, or stay in Huttonville. When Laura’s face becomes a staple in Grayson’s life, what was once a demon craving becomes a distant memory. What he once worked hard for and lost soon becomes something that he may have again. Things that once brought him to the edges of demise, become obliterated and exist only in random nightmares. Grayson’s tough exterior is softened through Laura’s honest and thoughtful words, and Laura sees life in a new light, and learns to laugh and have fun again with someone that isn’t family. But is this enough? Can two people who have been through so much, lost everything and worked hard to gain it back, learn to trust enough to let their guard down and see life and love for what it is? Short answer, yes. They both do. But just when they do, someone who has been watching from afar swoops in and threatens to take everything. Can they survive yet another tragedy…and more important, will they have to? This is a book about survival and love. In that order. This series is the start of a huge helping of feels. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frederick Manfred was the author of Lord Grizzly, finalist for the National Book Award, as well as twenty-six other novels and short story collections, many of which explore nuanced struggles with death and other life challenges which demand toughness and resilience. Although a work of fiction, Boy Almighty conveys Manfred's dramatic personal story of contracting tuberculosis as a young man and being cared for at a convalescent home at the Glen Lake Sanatorium in Minnesota. A remarkable blend of stream-of-consciousness and objective reporting, Boy Almighty is the story of a man in the throes of dissolution and disintegration from tuberculosis and of his recovery, reintegration, and rebirth. Eric Frey, sensitive, aware, in love with life, yet beset with frustration and failure, is at first too ill to be placed in a tubercular ward, where his almost certain death would be upsetting to the other patients. Running concurrently with the inner story of Frey's mind is the story of his body's struggle to survive. Boy Almighty is a profound and compelling study of a man who desperately wants to live and of his relationships with doctors, nurses, roommates, and a fellow patient who teaches him the meaning of love.

Download or read book Miss Sarah written by R.D. Roberts and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-03-23 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born and reared in China by missionary parents, Sarah Sullivan spent little time in the States. After her schooling, she remained in China, helping her father, Dr. Frederick Sullivan, an obstetrician at the Stout Memorial Hospital in Wuchow. When the Japanese invaded China prior to World War II, life became uncertain for the missionaries, and the mission board suggested they leave. Dr. Bill Wallace insisted those with families leave first. Sarahs family was forced to leave late one night. Only she and her father made it out of China alive. When we meet Miss Sarah, she is living alone on a farm in the South. Her attempt to hire a young black man to help her was her first encounter with racial discrimination. However, she was not prepared for the prejudice she found, even in the life of her pastor of the local Baptist church. During the time of segregation and separate but equal there were people both black and white who reached across those lines. I know. I was one of them, as were my parents and the wonderful people of the Baptist church where my dad served as pastor. Miss Sarah is a fictitious story, but it is an outgrowth of my experiences as a young high school boy, teaching piano at a colored one-room school during the 1950s, the example of my parents, their church, and the incredible story of Dr. Bill Wallace, medical missionary in China.
