Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book explores how identity issues thwart the ability to create the life you want. This book demonstrates how the modern trend to promote self- esteem training, positive thinking, and the tenets of the self-help movement encourages self-obsession, which backfires and makes it harder for people to create success. Authors Andersen and Fritz make the ultimate case that what you think about yourself doesn t matter, nor does it determine your prospects of accomplishment. In fact, the more you focus on yourself, the less you are able to learn, grow, develop needed skills, and create what matters most to you. This book will ruffle many feathers in the self-help world by revealing how some of the most common concepts are simply not true and even harmful. On the other side of these concepts is freedom from illusions, dogma, and belief. The ideas in Identity will give you the opportunity to truly become the dominant force and author of your life building process.

  • Author : Judson Brewer
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2021-03-09
  • ISBN : 0593330455
  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Unwinding Anxiety written by Judson Brewer and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller A step-by-step plan clinically proven to break the cycle of worry and fear that drives anxiety and addictive habits We are living through one of the most anxious periods any of us can remember. Whether facing issues as public as a pandemic or as personal as having kids at home and fighting the urge to reach for the wine bottle every night, we are feeling overwhelmed and out of control. But in this timely book, Judson Brewer explains how to uproot anxiety at its source using brain-based techniques and small hacks accessible to anyone. We think of anxiety as everything from mild unease to full-blown panic. But it's also what drives the addictive behaviors and bad habits we use to cope (e.g. stress eating, procrastination, doom scrolling and social media). Plus, anxiety lives in a part of the brain that resists rational thought. So we get stuck in anxiety habit loops that we can't think our way out of or use willpower to overcome. Dr. Brewer teaches us to map our brains to discover our triggers, defuse them with the simple but powerful practice of curiosity, and to train our brains using mindfulness and other practices that his lab has proven can work. Distilling more than 20 years of research and hands-on work with thousands of patients, including Olympic athletes and coaches, and leaders in government and business, Dr. Brewer has created a clear, solution-oriented program that anyone can use to feel better - no matter how anxious they feel.

Book The Costs of Poor Health Habits

Download or read book The Costs of Poor Health Habits written by Willard Manning and published by . This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poor health habits (drinking, smoking, lack of exercise) obviously take their toll on individuals and their families. The costs to society are less obvious but certainly more far-reaching. This investigation is the first to quantify the financial burden these detrimental habits place on American taxpayers. Willard Manning and his colleagues measure the direct costs of poor health habits (fire damage, motor vehicle accidents, legal fees), as well as collectively financed costs (medical care, employee sick leave, group health and life insurance, nursing home care, retirement pensions, liability insurance). Consider two co-workers covered by their employer's health plan: both pay the same premium, yet if one drinks heavily, the other--through their mutual insurance program--involuntarily funds the resulting health problems. After laying out their conceptual framework, methods, and analytical approach, the authors describe precisely how and to what extent drinking, smoking, and lack of exercise are currently subsidized, and make recommendations for reducing or reallocating the expense. They present, for example, a persuasive case for raising excise taxes on alcohol. The authors correlate their data to make costs comparable, to avoid double counting, and to determine the exact costs of each of these poor health habits and some of their findings are quite surprising. This unique study will be indispensable to public health policy specialists and researchers, as well as to health economists.

Book Habits for a Healthy Marriage

Download or read book Habits for a Healthy Marriage written by Dr. Richard Fitzgibbons and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on his experience of forty years as a psychiatrist, Dr. Richard Fitzgibbons presents twelve habits that can foster healing and growth in Catholic marriages. This books helps couples to identify and resolve the major emotional conflicts that weaken their relationships and hurt their marriages. Habits for a Healthy Marriage is unique because it draws on the field of positive psychology, which focuses on growth in virtues. Each chapter names a common marital problem along with a particular virtue that can help couples to overcome that problem. It shows that the road to healing is paved with forgiveness, not only between spouses but also within their families of origin. Along the way the author incorporates the luminous writing of Saint John Paul II on marriage and the timeless wisdom of the Catholic Church. Whether you are newly engaged, recently married, or married for many years, the conflict-resolving strategies described in this book—the habits of a healthy marriage—can help you to protect your relationship from the emotional storms that often lead to quarrelling and mistrust, and sometimes to separation and divorce.
