Book Virginia Cousins

  • Author : G. Brown Goode
  • Publisher : Genealogical Publishing Com
  • Release : 2009-06
  • ISBN : 080635173X
  • Pages : 602 pages

Download or read book Virginia Cousins written by G. Brown Goode and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of verbatim wills from 1656 to 1692 pertains not to present-day Rappahannock County but to "Old Rappahannock" County. "Old Rappahannock" was formed from Lancaster County in 1656; in 1692 its land south of the Rappahannock River was re-named Essex County, while that to the north became Richmond County. Owing to his interest in the ancestry of Francis Graves, son of Captain Thomas Graves, a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1619, Mr. Sweeney painstakingly transcribed the wills of this extinct county from scattered deed and order books at the courthouse in Tappahannock, Virginia. Although he never found the coveted will of his ancestor, the compiler amassed, in the form of these wills, a priceless collection of information about "the extent and boundaries of early patents, the comfortable household equipment of a few of the inhabitants...the provision for widows and children, the maintenance of servants and slaves, the education of the children, the importance of livestock...the care of the sick, family quarrels" and much more about this newly settled community. Genealogists will be able to search among the very same wills for the names, relationships, and whereabouts of 2,500 of the earliest settlers of what would become Essex and Richmond counties.

Book Maids and Mistresses Cousins and Queens

Download or read book Maids and Mistresses Cousins and Queens written by Susan Frye and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-01-28 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new collection of sixteen essays considers evidence for the varied forms of women's alliances in early modern England. It shows how women, prohibited from direct participation in the institutional structures that shaped the lives of men, constructed informal connections with other females for purposes of survival, advancement, and creativity. The essays presented here consider a variety of communities--formed among groups as diverse as serving women, vagrants, aristocrats, and authors--in order to study the historical traces of women's connections. "Alliance"--as understood by the essayists in this volume--does not preclude competition or antagonism, since the bonds among women were frequently determined by an opposition to other women. As shown here, the theorizing of women's connections, and the recovery of the historical evidence for these connections, can only add to our understanding of women's activities in early modern English society. Maids and Mistresses, Cousins and Queens is divided into four sections. The first two, "Alliances in the City" and "Alliances in the Household," examine the circumstances of women's communities in two primary sites for women of this place and time. The second two, "Materializing Communities" and "Emerging Alliances," fully study the aspirations that guided and transformed the courses of women's lives. All of these interdisciplinary essays, deftly combining literary and historical methods and materials, are informed by feminism, queer theory, and studies of class and race in the early modern period.

It guides readers towards a richer understanding of the central concepts of classical Indian Buddhist thought, from the time of Buddha to the latest scholarly perspectives and controversies. Abstract and complex ideas are made understandable by the authors' clear and engaging style. The second edition has been fully revised in light of new scholarship, in particular on Mahāyāna Buddhism and Tantric Buddhism, an often neglected and inadequately understood topic. Download or read book Identities and Allegiances in the Eastern Mediterranean After 1204 written by Judith Herrin and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores a complex period in Byzantine history, the thirteenth century, from the Fourth Crusade to the recapture of Constantinople by exiled leaders from Nicaea. Here, specialist historians of the Byzantine successor states of the period, and of their key neighbours, examine the self-projection and interactions of these states, combining military history and diplomacy, commercial and theological contacts, and the experiences and self-description of individuals. This wide-ranging series of articles uses a great diversity of sources - Arabic, Armenian, Bulgarian, Greek, Latin, Persian and Serbian - to exploit the potential of the novel methodology employed and of prosopography as an additional historical tool of analysis.
