Book excerpt: Welcome to Downtrodden Abbey, where a battle for the deed to the property is waged between legitimate aristocrats and literal pretenders to the throne. The Crawfish family—Marry, Supple, Enid, Lady Flora, and Lord Roderick—are content wiling their days away with naughty charades and twenty-two course dinners until the sinking of the Gigantic takes down the next in line to inherit Downtrodden. Soon, cousin Isabich and her son, Atchew, the rightful heir to the Abbey, arrive to claim what's theirs. Downstairs, the servants are running amok, as crippled weakling Brace is aggressively courted by teen hottie Nana, and lady's maid "Potatoes" O'Grotten and her flamboyant sidekick, Tomaine, cause trouble at every turn. The ensuing, insufferably overwrought melodrama takes the reader upstairs and downstairs, into parlours and drawing rooms, boudoirs and bathrooms, and across every class—from the classiest to the classless—in the social pecking order of Edwardian England. Uproariously funny, with a wicked sense of humor that Downton Abbey diehards will enjoy, Gillians Fetlocks skewers your favorite characters with panache in this winning parody

Book Rise You Downtrodden Blacks

Download or read book Rise You Downtrodden Blacks written by Tofara Y Dube and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-12-07 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is an observation and analysis of the status of black people all over the world. It does not only observe and analyse but goes as far as making recommendations about how blacks can be saved from other races and, more importantly, from themselves. Controversially, he is completely against reparations for slavery. Also controversially, this book asserts that the world cannot defeat racism without recognising the scientific basis and justification for racist behaviour. It also states that Al Qaeda is a racist organisation. Using Donald Trump as an example, the book warns Africa not to copy everything about Western culture without thinking. The book suggests how blacks can extricate themselves from their low status and esteem through various actions such as language reform, business linkages, and due attention to science.

Book excerpt: Hiram Bookers became disenchanted with his life on the east coast and sold his merchant fleet involved in the Slave Trade and bought a large parcel south of Santa Barbara. After he built his home, he advertised for a mail order bride. While on a hunting trip, Hiram was shot and left for dead. He was found and taken to the hospital by Tommy Sanchez, the son of Sitting Bull and his wife Sarah who'd been married to Crazy Horse, the Indian hero of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. When Hiram recovered, he was suffering from amnesia. Tommy Sanchez and his wife took him in and employed him at their ranch. The county sheriff, seeking reelection sensed that Silas Smith, as Bookers was now called, may have been involved in a robbery of a special train, carrying thirty thousand in money for a new bank in Santa Barbara. The sheriff harassed Silas until he uncovered evidence pointing at him as one of the train bandits. It was Tommy Sanchez who found the clues pointing to someone else. He came up with a plan to free Smith, uncover his past and identify the actual train robber.

Book Fortunes of the Once Downtrodden

Download or read book Fortunes of the Once Downtrodden written by Mike Sullivan and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-02-10 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rags-to-riches tale of two young adult males in their early twenties, Fred Murphy and Mitch Stein, who also help keep the memory of a quiet, lonely, somewhat misfit social studies teacher, Simon Goldberg, who passed away alive by publishing his romance story. Through this journey, Fred and Mitch meet two women, and they are, at the core, loyal to them. The book has a surprising ending, which can only be appreciated by hanging on each word like holding on to the handrails of a roller coaster through a roller coaster ride. The author, himself, practiced abstinence from dating women to improve his romance writing and to also get inside the mind of one of the main characters, Simon Goldberg. It is an amazing adventure and love story.

Book Liberty to the Downtrodden

Download or read book Liberty to the Downtrodden written by Matthew J. Grow and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas L. Kane (18221883), a crusader for antislavery, womens rights, and the downtrodden, rose to prominence in his day as the most ardent and persuasive defender of Mormons religious liberty. Though not a Mormon, Kane sought to defend the much-reviled group from the Holy War waged against them by evangelical America. His courageous personal intervention averted a potentially catastrophic bloody conflict between federal troops and Mormon settlers in the now nearly forgotten Utah War of 185758. Drawing on extensive, newly available archives, this book is the first to tell the full story of Kanes extraordinary life. The book illuminates his powerful Philadelphia family, his personal life and eccentricities, his reform achievements, his place in Mormon history, and his career as a Civil War general. Further, the book revises previous understandings of nineteenth-century reform, showing how Kane and likeminded others fused Democratic Party ideology, anti-evangelicalism, and romanticism.

Book excerpt: Recent years have seen dawning awareness of the long-hidden suffering of India's millions of Dalit people, marginalized and oppressed as 'untouchables' falling outside the traditional Hindu caste system. Their treatment, which cuts across communal and religious lines, has become an important concern of the churches in their commitment internationally to combat all forms of racism. The author of this book, a Dalit from North India, uncovers the religious roots of this system of oppression and surveys its historical development over 3500 years, as well as the beginnings of the Dalits' struggle to free themselves from it. He also analyses the role played by missionaries, churches and Christian theology in the past and suggests what must change if Christians are to have a part in articulating and bringing about a vision of solidarity and genuine liberation.

Book The Truly Disadvantaged

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An assessment of the relationship between race and poverty in the United States, and potential solutions for the issue. Renowned American sociologist William Julius Wilson takes a look at the social transformation of inner-city ghettos, offering a sharp evaluation of the convergence of race and poverty. Rejecting both conservative and liberal interpretations of life in the inner city, Wilson offers essential information and several solutions to policymakers. The Truly Disadvantaged is a wide-ranging examination, looking at the relationship between race, employment, and education from the 1950s onwards, with surprising and provocative findings. This second edition also includes a new afterword from Wilson himself that brings the book up to date and offers fresh insight into its findings. Praise for The Truly Disadvantaged “The Truly Disadvantaged should spur critical thinking in many quarters about the causes and possible remedies for inner city poverty. As policymakers grapple with the problems of an enlarged underclass they—as well as community leaders and all concerned Americans of all races—would be advised to examine Mr. Wilson’s incisive analysis.” —Robert Greenstein, New York Times Book Review “The Truly Disadvantaged not only assembles a vast array of data gleamed from the works of specialists, it offers much new information and analysis. Wilson has asked the hard questions, he has done his homework, and he has dared to speak unpopular truths.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review “Required reading for anyone, presidential candidate or private citizen, who really wants to address the growing plight of the black urban underclass.” —David J. Garrow, Washington Post Book World
