Book International Encyclopedia of Housing and Home

Download or read book International Encyclopedia of Housing and Home written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-10-09 with total page 3870 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available online via SciVerse ScienceDirect, or in print for a limited time only, The International Encyclopedia of Housing and Home, Seven Volume Set is the first international reference work for housing scholars and professionals, that uses studies in economics and finance, psychology, social policy, sociology, anthropology, geography, architecture, law, and other disciplines to create an international portrait of housing in all its facets: from meanings of home at the microscale, to impacts on macro-economy. This comprehensive work is edited by distinguished housing expert Susan J. Smith, together with Marja Elsinga, Ong Seow Eng, Lorna Fox O'Mahony and Susan Wachter, and a multi-disciplinary editorial team of 20 world-class scholars in all. Working at the cutting edge of their subject, liaising with an expert editorial advisory board, and engaging with policy-makers and professionals, the editors have worked for almost five years to secure the quality, reach, relevance and coherence of this work. A broad and inclusive table of contents signals (or tesitifes to) detailed investigation of historical and theoretical material as well as in-depth analysis of current issues. This seven-volume set contains over 500 entries, listed alphabetically, but grouped into seven thematic sections including methods and approaches; economics and finance; environments; home and homelessness; institutions; policy; and welfare and well-being. Housing professionals, both academics and practitioners, will find The International Encyclopedia of Housing and Home useful for teaching, discovery, and research needs. International in scope, engaging with trends in every world region The editorial board and contributors are drawn from a wide constituency, collating expertise from academics, policy makers, professionals and practitioners, and from every key center for housing research Every entry stands alone on its merits and is accessed alphabetically, yet each is fully cross-referenced, and attached to one of seven thematic categories whose ‘wholes' far exceed the sum of their parts

Book Roads to Prosperity

Download or read book Roads to Prosperity written by Gary S. Sands and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores popular economic development strategies in midsize Canadian urban areas. Roads to Prosperity: Economic Development Lessons from Midsize Canadian Cities explores the relative prosperity of midsize Canadian urban areas (population 50,000 to 400,000) over the past two decades. Communities throughout North America have strived for decades to maintain and enhance the prosperity of their residents. In the areas that are the focus of this research, the results of these efforts have been mixed—some communities have been relatively successful while others have fallen further behind the national averages. Midsize cities often lack the resources, both internal and external, to sustain and enhance their prosperity. Policies and strategies that have been successful in larger urban areas may be less effective (or unaffordable) in smaller ones. Roads to Prosperity first examines the economic structure of forty-two Canadian urban regions that fall within the midsize range to determine the economic specializations that characterize these communities and to trace how these specializations have evolved over the time period between 1991 and 2011. While urban areas with an economic base of natural resource or manufacturing industries tend to retain this economic function over the years, communities that rely on the service industries have been much more likely to experience some degree of restructuring in their economies over the past twenty years. The overall trend among these communities has been for their employment profiles to become more similar and for their economic specialization to fade over time. The second part of the book looks at a number of currently popular economic development strategies as they have been applied to midsize urban areas and their success and failures. While there appears to be no single economic development strategy that will lead to greater prosperity for every community, Sands and Reese explore the various factors that help explain why some work and others don’t. Those with an interest in urban planning and community development will find this monograph highly informative.

Book The Politics of Urban Development

Download or read book The Politics of Urban Development written by Clarence Nathan Stone and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past twenty years the study of urban politics has shifted from a predominant concern with political culture and ethos to a preoccupation with political economy, particularly that of urban development. Urban scholars have come to recognize that cities are shaped by forces beyond their boundaries. From that focus have emerged the views that cities are clearly engaged in economic competition; that market processes are shaped by national policy decisions, sometimes intentionally and sometimes inadvertently; and that the costs and benefits of economic growth are unevenly distributed. But what else needs to be said about the policies and politics of urban development? To supplement prevailing theories, The Politics of Urban Development argues that the role of local actors in making development decisions merits closer study. Whatever the structural constraints, politics still matters. Collectively the essays provide ample evidence that local government officials and other community actors do not simply follow the imperatives that derive from the national political economy; they are able to assert a significant degree of influence over the shared destiny of an urban population. The impact of the collection is to heighten awareness of local political practices and of how and why they make a difference.

Book Panoptic Dreams

Download or read book Panoptic Dreams written by Sean Patrick Hier and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The number of Canadian cities using video surveillance systems to monitor city streets is growing. In Panoptic Dreams, Sean Hier explores how and why Canadian cities introduced street surveillance programs between 1981 and 2005 and brings to light the governance structures and privacy protection policy frameworks that made these programs possible. This book uses empirical findings to reflect critically on video surveillance policy and design structures in Canada. The original analyses will assist academics, privacy advocates, and others with community-based interests to assess the strengths and weaknesses of establishing streetscape CCTV surveillance monitoring systems."--

Book Panoptic Dreams

Download or read book Panoptic Dreams written by Sean P. Hier and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past few decades have seen a proliferation of video surveillance systems in major centres in a number of Western countries. Is this development in the public interest, or does it signal a move toward more intrusive forms of policing? This book provides much-needed data for this debate as it explores how and why some Canadian cities introduced street surveillance programs between 1981 and 2005, and it brings to light the governance structures and privacy protection policy frameworks that made these programs possible. Although surveillance initiatives sprang from a dream to establish a crime-prevention system of discipline and social control, that dream soon gave way to rationalizations based on the idea that streetscape video surveillance is a crime-solving tool that makes people feel safer. Panoptic Dreams not only identifies good practice in planning, design, and implementation, it will foster informed debate about the ethics and utility of streetscape video surveillance in Western democracies.
