Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Downsizing is one of the most frequently used business strategies for reducing costs, returning firms to profit or for restructuring businesses following takeovers, mergers and acquisitions. Downsizing measures are also set to become much more prevalent in the public sector as governments seek to restrict levels of public spending. This book is one of the first to provide a thorough study of downsizing from a global perspective. It examines the phenomenon in its entirety, exploring how it is initiated and what the process of downsizing looks like. It also looks at the effects of downsizing at a number of different levels, from the individual (e.g., motivational effects, effects on health and stress levels) to the organizational (e.g., financial outcomes, reputational and productivity outcomes). Written by an international team of experts, the book provides a comprehensive overview of downsizing that examines both the strategic and human implications of this process.

Book Downsizing the Federal Government

Download or read book Downsizing the Federal Government written by Vernon D Jones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main focus of downsizing has shifted from the private to the public sector. The cutbacks began in the Department of Defense. Now the goal is a federal civilian workforce reduction of 12 percent by the year 2000. This pioneering study looks at the management of workforce reductions in the public sector both in theory and in practice. Three case studies -- of the Defense Logistics Agency, the Bureau of Reclamation, and the Food and Drug Administration -- illustrate the organizational, managerial, and human dimensions of attempting to improve performance with reduced resources. The author draws on extensive interviews with senior executives and middle managers in the three agencies; at the General Accounting Office, the Office of Personnel Management, and the National Performance Review; the Senior Executives Association and the Federal Managers Association; and scholars and researchers. In a larger sense, this work pushes the boundaries of knowledge concerning organizational change and makes a significant contribution to organization theory. It offers important new insights not only for public sector managers but for organization theorists and management specialists whose work on downsizing has been presumed but not shown to be applicable to the public sector.

Book Downsizing Democracy

Download or read book Downsizing Democracy written by Matthew A. Crenson and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally publushed in 2002. In Downsizing Democracy, Matthew A. Crenson and Benjamin Ginsberg describe how the once powerful idea of a collective citizenry has given way to a concept of personal, autonomous democracy. Today, political change is effected through litigation, lobbying, and term limits, rather than active participation in the political process, resulting in narrow special interest groups dominating state and federal decision-making. At a time when an American's investment in the democratic process has largely been reduced to an annual contribution to a political party or organization, Downsizing Democracy offers a critical reassessment of American democracy.

Book Downsizing the Blended Home

Download or read book Downsizing the Blended Home written by Marni Jameson and published by Union Square + ORM. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fresh decorating and decluttering advice for the modern family—a must-have book to help those who are merging their hearts, lives, and homes. When merging households, one plus one needs to equal . . . one. The path toward that fundamental fact, however, is not so easy. With the same warm, narrative tone that made Downsizing the Family Home such a success—and using her own story of marriage and merger in midlife as a backdrop—Marni Jameson guides you through the turf wars and transitions, so you understand what matters and what doesn’t, and can discover a style that suits you both. Along the way she interviews psychologists, designers, and couples who’ve made it through the process, passing along tips, tricks, and marriage-bolstering advice. The wise advice includes: If you want to transform a space from me to we, the fastest, cheapest way is with paint. Look around you for the five or so nonnegotiable items that ground you, items that tether you so you’re not adrift. Give those a place in your remodeled space and build on them. The old marital bed is a charged item, as are family photos of the former spouse or partner. A new bed is ideal, and new bedding is a must. Injecting a contemporary rug or piece of art, or a modern lamp or sculpture is a safe way to start moving toward modern in a room full of traditional furnishings. Buying furniture together is a great way to invest in your look and your future. Start with something big in your combined style.

Book Downsizing Science

Download or read book Downsizing Science written by Kenneth M. Brown and published by American Enterprise Institute Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Federal support for science and technology, after decades of growth, has been declining for several years and faces even deeper cuts as a result of future efforts to balance the budget. In this book, Kenneth Brown assesses the likely consequences of tighter science budgets and suggests ways in which U.S. science can come to terms with downsizing. After discussing the traditional justifications for governmental support of science, the author analyzes their validity. What can we infer about a future in which the private sector will inevitable play a greater role in scientific research? he asks. The book focuses particularly on the effects of reduced support for research at universities and federal laboratories and considers ramifications for the future international standing of U.S. science.

Spending time with, and encouraging, his two grown children is a pleasure and priority.
