Book excerpt: Recently developed pressure-temperature-spinner (PTS) tools are used to collect reliable downhole measurements in geothermal systems, such as at The Geysers. PTS surveys in several flowing Geysers steam wells were used to quantify steam entry location and magnitude, wellbore heat loss, pressure drop due to friction, thermodynamic properties of the steam, and maximum rock temperature. Interwell cross flow/interference was identified in one well. Finally, a single-phase saturated steam wellbore model used to compare calculated to measured downhole values, was found to adequately predict the flowing pressure versus depth curves in vapor filled holes.

Book excerpt: Certain wells within The Geysers steam field have standing water columns either when first drilled or when produced at low flow rates. These water columns have been attributed by Lipman et al. (1978) to accumulation of water condensing in the well bore. Alternative explanations are that perched water bodies exist within the reservoir or that a deep water body underlying the steam reservoir has been tapped. A well in the Castle Rock field of The Geysers drilled by Signal Oil and Gas Company (now Aminoil, U.S.A.) with such a water column was sampled in 1976 for water, gas, and isotope chemistry in hopes of distinguishing between these possible origins; the results along with the well history and downhole pressure and temperature measurements are reported here. The well is located in Lake County, California, in the central part of the Castle Rock field, 4.8 km west-northwest of the town of Anderson Springs. Drilling was started in mid 1970 on a ridge at an elevation of 700 m above sea level. Steam entries were encountered at depths (below land surface) of 1,899, 1,902, 2,176, 2,248 2,288, and 2,295 m; the total depth drilled was 2,498 m. Large volume water entries above 685 m were cased off to 762 m.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents results from a flowing pressure-temperature-spinner log run in a well drilled by GEO Operator Corporation (GEOOC) at The Geysers. Analysis and interpretation of the log data are also presented. The data indicated superheated steam with a temperature of 600 F (316 C) and an enthalpy of 1316 BTU/lbm (725 cal/gm) entered the wellbore below 8000 feet (2438 meters). This temperature and enthalpy is much higher than most Geysers steam wells which produce steam at or below 475 F (246 C) and 1240 BTU/lbm (683 CALIgm). The high temperature and enthalpy are even more puzzling since static pressure and temperature measurements conducted with Kuster type instruments six months later, indicate a ''normal'' vapor-dominated system existing at 475 F (246 C) and 500 psia (35 Kg/cm2). Conceptual reservoir models which can explain these unusual thermodynamic conditions are presented.

Book excerpt: In this paper we develop and demonstrate a method to estimate the reservoir pressure and a productivity index for vertical steam wells, from its production characteristic (also called output) curves. In addition, the method allows to estimate the radius of influence of the well, provided that a value of the reservoir transmisivity is available. The basic structure of the present method is: first, the measured well head mass flowrates and pressures are transformed to downhole conditions by means of a numerical simulator; then, the computed downhole variables are fitted to a simple radial model that predicts the sandface flowrate in terms of the flowing pressure. For demonstration, the method was applied to several steam wells from the Los Azufres Geothermal field. We found excellent agreement of the model with this ample set of field data. As a bonus, the processed data allowed several inferences about the steam producing zone of the reservoir: that the wells considered produce from relatively isolated pockets of steam, which are probably fed by near-by inmobile water; and that these feed zones are in poor hydraulic communication with the field surface waters. our method are that it provides a way to retrieve important reservoir information from usually available production characteristic curves, and that the method works from easily and accurately taken wellhead measurements.

Book excerpt: Dimensionless flowrate type curves were applied to steam wells at The Geysers in an attempt to quantify reservoir properties and to predict flowrate decline. Although data scatter was a problem, the flowrate data was smoothed by a normalization routine based on the back-pressure equation and the wells were modeled by dimensionless functions for a radial system with a infinite or finite outer boundary and a constant pressure inner boundary (composite analytical-empirical type curve). The "match" resulted in a unique D{sub i} value for use in Arps' equation and a permeability-thickness product (kh) comparable to kh values obtained from pressure buildup analysis. Finally, it was shown that at least four years of data is required to obtain a unique b value. 2 tabs., 12 refs., 12 figs.

Book excerpt: A new downhole sampling tool has been built for use in steam wells at The Geysers geothermal reservoir. The tool condenses specimens into an initially evacuated vessel that is opened down hole at the direction of an on-board computer. The tool makes a temperature log of the well as it is deployed, and the pressure and temperature of collected specimens are monitored for diagnostic purposes. Initial tests were encouraging, and the Department of Energy has funded an expanded effort that includes data gathering needed to develop a three-dimensional model of The Geysers geochemical environment. Collected data will be useful for understanding the origins of hydrogen chloride and non-condensable gases in the steam, as well as tracking the effect of injection on the composition of produced steam. Interested parties are invited to observe the work and to join the program.
