Book excerpt: Fiction. Latinx Studies. Translated by Noel Black. DOWN WITH GARGAMEL! is a futurist tale set in Puerto Rico, New York, and Colorado Springs that unfolds during the transition from peak oil production to a future that's formless, dangerous, and full of possibility. As global capitalism collapses under the weight of a worsening environmental crisis, we encounter the stories of six friends as they move through different forms of consciousness and across galaxies. Stories are presented as a narrative fractal in which the same occurrence is retold at different scales. Conversations abound: on black holes during a Puerto Rican blackout; inside the head of a schizophrenic professor; in an apartment in Brooklyn the very morning the world learns aliens have sent us a message; at a "happy death home" where three comrades and a cat care for twelve voluntarily dying bodies; and finally between intergalactic Smurfs and a nostalgic angel. Rosa's vision is at once absurd and terrifying, specific and idealistic, rooted in the paranoid tradition of J.L. Borges and Phillip K. Dick and inspired by a wide range of radical political movements.

Book excerpt: Part memoir, part essay collection, Megan Dunn’s ingenious, moving, hilariously personal Things I Learned at Art School tells the story of her early life and coming-of-age in New Zealand in the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. From her parents’ divorce to her Smurf collection, from the mean girls at school to the mermaid movie Splash!, from her work in strip clubs and massage parlours (and one steak restaurant) to the art school of the title, this is a dazzling, killer read from a contemporary voice of comic brilliance. Chapters include: The Ballad of Western Barbie; A Comprehensive List of All the Girls Who Teased Me at Western Heights High School, What They Looked Like and Why They Did It; On Being a Redhead; Life Begins at Forty: That Time My Uncle Killed Himself; Good Girls Write Memoirs, Bad Girls Don’t Have Time; Videos I Watched with My Father; Things I Learned at Art School; CV of a Fat Waitress; Nine Months in a Massage Parlour Called Belle de Jour; Various Uses for a Low Self-esteem; Art in the Waiting Room and Submerging Artist. Praise for Tinderbox: “Tinderbox is deadpan hilarious and Megan Dunn is a comic genius.” - Susanna Andrew, Metro “Megan Dunn's wry, whip-smart memoir about Fahrenheit 451, literary ambition & the last days of Borders Bookstores is funny & insightful as hell. Like Kathy Acker meets Sue Townsend. The read of the summer! ... already one of my favourite New Zealand books.” - Hera Lindsay Bird “Witty, highly entertaining.” - Philip Matthews, Stuff "Tinderbox is such a shape-shifter, such a sui generis work, that to call it a memoir does it a disservice ... [Dunn’s] voice is hard to resist – sardonic, brazen, sagacious – recalling, in places, Nora Ephron, John Jeremiah Sullivan, and Maggie Nelson.” - James Cook, Review 31

Book excerpt: The Smurfs always seem to get into trouble when Papa Smurf is not around. While Papa Smurf works in his laboratory, two Smurfs begin arguing about the proper use of the word "smurf." Smurfs that live in the northern part of the village use it as a verb (as in "bottle smurfer"), while the southerners use it as a noun (as in "smurf opener"). Without Papa Smurf around to calm things down, the argument quickly escalates until the northern and southern smurfs divide themselves along the village lines! With the southern Smurfs set to perform their play "Little Smurf Riding Hood" for the northern Smurfs, it looks like the language disagreement is going to get worse before it gets better!

This book was released on 2014-05-13 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tech billionaire seeks revenge that will kill millions… …but first he plans to take out the half-Japanese secret agent who is a thorn in his side… A philanthropist and visionary in the computer world, Gargamel Tossert is the last person authorities would suspect of bombing a Los Angeles skyscraper—connecting California’s internet to the rest of the world. Unfortunately for him, Kiki Claymore is right on his trail. Why? Because Tossert has brainwashed Kiki’s old roommate, Aislinn Rousseau, as his own agent of evil. But when Kiki is forced to secretly escape the United States, all because of Tossert’s actions, she refuses to stay undercover. Kiki demands to infiltrate Tossert’s network, and rescue Aislinn from his influence. The trail leads to a secret bunker under Katarina, a historic neighborhood of Stockholm, Sweden. With the unlikely help of the Hell’s Angels, Kiki races against time to save her friend. And stop Tossert’s plan to bring the world to its knees—by destroying every automobile built in the last twenty years with a deadly computer virus. From inside the novel… “One more thing, for the next forty minutes you can’t stand up, okay?” Kiki looked to the ceiling. There wasn’t much room anyway. “Why not?” “We’re only flying twenty feet above sea level. Less than the height of a normal suburban house. At that altitude the uplift is so fragile that even the slightest variation in weight could send us into the water. So head to the restroom before we take off.” “Below the radar,” said Tin Man. “But after forty minutes they have to gain altitude. The pilot loses the ability to judge distance. Over the water there’s nothing for perspective. The chance of a crash increases.” “Until Mei turns off the smoking sign, okay?” said Digby. Kiki sat back in her seat as the man in the polo shirt helped Digby raise the stairs and lock the door. Ground crew directed them onto the tarmac. After fifteen or so minutes the plane took off. At first they climbed, then came down again. Kiki looked out the window. The ocean was so close you could almost touch it. KA-PLUNK! The jet wobbled violently. Then stabilized. Salt spray splashed against Kiki’s window. “Sorry about that,” came Mei’s voice over the intercom. “Something was in our way.” Kiki looked out as the jet shot past a cruise ship. No more than a hundred feet away. The very same boat which had woken her that morning.

Download or read book On the Aisle Volume 3 written by Philip Morency and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the Aisle, Volume 3 by Philip Morency On the Aisle, Volume 3: Film Reviews by Philip Morency is the third in the series of movie reviews written by Philip Morency. This edition contains films ranging from the years 2010 through 2012, with some periodic “oldies but goodies” mixed in. Like Philip’s previous two books, On the Aisle, Volume 3 contains brief and to-the-point movie reviews that are geared toward the average moviegoer. It is not really written from a critic’s perspective, but from that of the average viewer. The reviews are simple and easy to understand. What is unique about the book is that it tells the synopsis of the film, then it gives the author’s opinion of the film, and then it lets the reader decide whether or not they would like to see the film. The films are rated on a scale of 1 through 5. There are also half-star ratings, such as 3 ½ stars (VERY GOOD). The contained films are listed in alphabetical order, and for ease of reference, there is also a table of contents page. Enjoy… On the Aisle, Volume 3.
