Book Mobility and Migration Choices

Download or read book Mobility and Migration Choices written by Martin van der Velde and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crossing of national state borders is one of the most-discussed issues of contemporary times and it poses many challenges for individual and collective identities. This concerns both short-distance mobility as well as long-distance migration. Choosing to move - or not - across international borders is a complex decision, involving both cognitive and emotional processes. This book tests the approach that three crucial thresholds need to be crossed before mobility occurs; the individual’s mindset about migrating, the choice of destination and perception of crossing borders to that location and the specific routes and spatial trajectories available to get there. Thus both borders and trajectories can act as thresholds to spatial moves. The threshold approach, with its focus on processes affecting whether, when and where to move, aims to understand the decision-making process in all its dimensions, in the hope that this will lead to a better understanding of the ways migrants conceive, perceive and undertake their transnational journeys. This book examines the three constitutive parts discerned in the cross-border mobility decision-making process: people, borders and trajectories and their interrelationships. Illustrated by a global range of case studies, it demonstrates that the relation between the three is not fixed but flexible and that decision-making contains aspects of belonging, instability, security and volatility affecting their mobility or immobility.

Book Angels With Dirty Faces

Download or read book Angels With Dirty Faces written by Gary Clarke and published by Paragon Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-04 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1938 in the Depression with WWII on the horizon, movie-going audiences were riveted by ‘Angels with Dirty Faces’, the morality tale of a priest trying to stop a gangster from corrupting street kids. Flash forward to 1960s and 1970s Nottingham, England, the home of Robin Hood, where two lads who never met each other until later in life, grew up humbly and with many challenges. They both took paths that, like the gangster in the movie, led them to an extraordinary destiny as world game-changers. What did they decide to do next? Create a series of podcasts that became the basis for a book. Missional Architect, author, educator, podcaster, and Nottingham Forest fan Paul D. Lowe sits down with Nottingham Forest fan, author, sports figure, and former football hooligan Gary ‘Boatsy’ Clarke to compare childhoods, ponder fatherhood, share favourite music (they both jam to Sinatra), and reveal never-before shared secrets…and, of course, to talk football. Lots of it. There are life lessons and bouts of philosophy about the beautiful game of football, and the beautiful game of life. Gary and Paul are joined by a few friends as guest interviewers: Kristin Johnson, Keith Amoss, Mick Garton, Rebecca Wheele, Darryl Claypole, Jason Kehoe, and Andrew Batt. Think of it as a group of friends having a series of intimate chats over a cup of tea and a slice of cake. And along the way, the dirty faces fall away to reveal the angels underneath.

Book Miss Memory Lane

Download or read book Miss Memory Lane written by Colton Haynes and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-03-21 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A brutally honest memoir that socks you in the gut with its candor” (Elton John and David Furnish) about lust, abuse, addiction, stardom, and redemption from Arrow and Teen Wolf actor Colton Haynes. In 2018, Colton Haynes woke up in a hospital. He’d had two seizures, lost vision in one eye, almost ruptured a kidney, and been put on an involuntary psychiatric hold. Not yet thirty, he knew he had to take stock of his life and make some serious changes if he wanted to see his next birthday. As he worked towards sobriety, Haynes allowed himself to become vulnerable for the first time and discovered profound self-awareness. He had millions of social media followers who constantly told him they loved him. But what would they think if they knew his true story? If they knew where he came from and the things he had done? Now, Colton bravely pulls back the curtain on his life and career, revealing the incredible highs and devastating lows. From his unorthodox childhood in a small Kansas town, to coming to terms with his sexuality, he keeps nothing back. By sixteen, he had been signed by the world’s top modeling agency and his face appeared on billboards. But he was still a broke, lonely, confused teenager, surrounded by people telling him he could be a star as long as he never let anyone see his true self. As Colton’s career in television took off, the stress of wearing so many masks and trying to please so many different people turned his use of drugs and alcohol into full-blown addiction. “In searing, honest prose, he tells a coming-of-age story that is utterly his own, yet surprisingly universal” (Bill Clegg, New York Times bestselling author)—of dreams deferred and dreams fulfilled; of a family torn apart and rebuilt; and of a man stepping into the light as no one but himself.
