Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that Scouting has touched the lives of a quarter of a billion boys and girls and their leaders around the world in the past century, its history has been largely ignored. Scouting Frontiers: Youth and the Scout Movement’s First Century is the first book to discuss the history and principal themes of the Boy Scout and Girl Guide movements on an international scale. Inspired by presentations at the ground-breaking 2008 Johns Hopkins University symposium, "Scouting: A Centennial History," the authors examine the world's greatest youth movement through the diverse experiences of its members and their organizations. From Muslim Scouts in Wales to French Scouts in Syria to Girl Guides in colonial Kenya, Scouting has responded to the challenges of international expansion and transformed itself to address cultural, political and social diversity. Scouting Frontiers focuses particularly on the intersections between Scouting’s origins and its transformations over the last century as it faced frontiers of nation, empire, religion, race, class, and gender.

Book excerpt: It was the summer of 1950 in Taneytown, Alabama, and what started out as a childish game quickly turned tragic when Maggie Green's playmate Angel disappeared. Maggie lied to her parents and the police about where they had been playing to protect another friend. That lie would haunt her long after she and her brother discovered Angel's lifeless body in the woods. Sensing that their way of life would never be as innocent and carefree again, Maggie and her friends struggled to comprehend who in their town could commit such a brutal crime. Frustrated and scared residents voiced prejudices and hurled accusations against odd town characters, including the Walking Man and Maggie's trusted friend, Mozell, the old Negro woman who lived in the river bottoms. But Maggie soon learned that good and evil can be found in many forms-few of them obvious or predictable. Five decades later, Maggie heads back to her hometown. Memories of the past instantly flood her mind: the smell of red clay, the coolness of the Cahaba River, and the calls of mockingbirds take her back to that hot summer when she made a promise that would take a lifetime to fulfill .

The Cullman Alabama Tribune continued to record news of the development of the city, county, and surrounding region. As with the first two books of this series, microfilm was obtained from the State Archives in Montgomery and a page by page examination of the newspaper was conducted and every birth, death, marriage, obituary, and news important to the history and development of Cullman County was recorded. This volume also contains rare first person accounts of the Civil War activities of George Martin Holcombe and Elijah Wilson Harper ("Killacranky"). This book is important to any genealogist or historian with connections to Cullman County and contains many rare accounts and mentions of the earliest settlers of the region.

Book excerpt: When several people are brutally killed in the town of Placerton, on the isolated Oregon coast, most locals think a rogue bear or cougar is roaming the forested hills near town. Police Chief Dan Connor is not so sure. He has witnessed some very strange things lately, such as disembodied voices, muttering a strange foreign language and an old Indian man who seems to be near every crime scene, but disappears before he can be questioned. Dan's investigation takes him to the local Sihketunnai Indians and their legend of the Ni'il, magical shamans charged with maintaining the balance between humans and the natural world. According to the elders, one of the Ni'il is responsible for the murders and intends to kill everyone in the community. It is Dan's job to stop it. It sounded unbelievable, but was the only explanation that fit the facts. As a violent Pacific storm crashes ashore, cutting off power and washing out roadscutting the town off from the outside world--Dan finds himself entering a strange world of myth and magic that was not covered in his police training. He must use all his wits and new-found powers to save himself and his community from the Ni'il.

Book excerpt: Death leapt upon the Rev. Charles Cardinal, Rector of St. Dreots in South Glebeshire, at the moment that he bent down towards the second long drawer of his washhand-stand; he bent down to find a clean collar. It is in its way a symbol of his whole life, that death claimed him before he could find one. At one moment his mind was intent upon his collar; at the next he was stricken with a wild surmise, a terror that even at that instant he would persuade himself was exaggerated. He saw before his clouding eyes a black pit. A strong hand striking him in the middle of his back flung him contemptuously forward into it; a gasping cry of protest and all was over. Had time been permitted, he would have stretched out a hand towards the shabby black box that, true to all miserly convention, occupied the space beneath his bed. Time was not allowed him. He might take with him into the darkness neither money nor clean clothing. He had been told on many occasions about his heart, that he must not excite nor strain it. He allowed that to pass as he allowed many other things because his imagination was fixed upon one ambition, and one alone. He had made, upon this last and fatal occasion, haste to find his collar because the bell had begun its Evensong clatter and he did not wish to-night to be late. The bell continued to ring and he lay his broad widespread length upon the floor. He was a large and dirty man.
