Book excerpt: Many catholics today--even those who attend Mass regularly--are confused about the Church's teaching on moral issues like abortion, premartial sex, and homosexuality. In an age where even some Catholic thelogians fail to uphold Church teaching in areas like premarial sex and the presence of Christ in the Eucharist, " The Catechism issue of the Catholic Church" is a beacon on stormy seas. The critical issues is this: How can Catholics in the pew understand and apply this massive new catechism that is meant to guide them into the twenty--first century? Pope Jhon Paul II clearly intends it to be used by all the members of the Church and not simply as a resource for theologians and catechists. But how can lay Catholics begin the task of absorbing the message of this important work? In the faith, Father Hardon offers a popular guide, written in question--and--answer format, that provides a road map for those who want to fully embrace the teachings of the catholic Church. In concise and clear language Father John Hardon explains the"what," the "why" and the "how" of the Cathecism for the popular reader: what it's about, why it's important and how to use it. Interested lay Catholics, pastors, parents and catechists will find that Father Hardon's The Faith is a sure guide to help them understand and apply their faith--today and into the next century.

Reflecting a massive amount of research, against the background of an in-depth survey of various views of baptism in church history, Fesko provides an extensive exegetical and biblical-theological study of the covenantal and eschatological significance of baptism followed by systematic theological reflections on key issues like baptism as a means of grace, the efficacy of baptism, the biblical warrant for infant baptism (and against paedocommunion) and the importance of baptism for the church. One need not agree with his reflections at every point to benefit from his considerable labors." - Richard B. Gaffin, Jr., Professor of Biblical and Systematic Theology, Emeritus, Westminster Theological Seminary

Book Torture in Brazil

Download or read book Torture in Brazil written by Joan Dassin and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1964 until 1985, Brazil was ruled by a military regime that sanctioned the systematic use of torture in dealing with its political opponents. The catalog of what went on during that grim period was originally published in Portuguese as Brasil: Nunca Mais (Brazil: Never Again) in 1985. The volume was based on the official documentation kept by the very military that perpetrated the horrific acts. These extensive documents include military court proceedings of actual trials, secretly photocopied by lawyers associated with the Catholic Church and analyzed by a team of researchers. Their daring project—known as BNM for Brasil: Nunca Mais—compiled more than 2,700 pages of testimony by political prisoners documenting close to three hundred forms of torture. The BNM project proves conclusively that torture was an essential part of the military justice system and that judicial authorities were clearly aware of the use of torture to extract confessions. Still, it took more than a decade after the publication of Brasil: Nunca Mais for the armed forces to admit publicly that such torture had ever taken place. Torture in Brazil, the English version of the book re-edited here, serves as a timely reminder of the role of Brazil's military in past repression.

Although committed to the Catholic religion, he does not obscure the Church's failings as he lays out the fundamentals of the faith. He provides insights into the great Christological councils, discusses the differences in the spiritualities of East and West, and portrays the crucial roles that the pope and bishops played during the Middle Ages. Incorporating the thought of Augustine, Acquinas, and medieval Catholicism, he traces the rise and decline of Christian Europe and the issues raised by reform. Book excerpt: Poetry from Beyond the Grave is the first English publication of a large selection of poems by the Brazilian medium and Spiritist leader Francisco Cândido “Chico” Xavier. These poems, originally collected in the volume Parnaso de Além-Túmulo, were dictated to Xavier by a variety of spirits of Brazilian poets from the afterlife, as journeying souls or as witnesses of the spiritual city Nosso Lar, “our house.” Poetry from Beyond the Grave is a veritable collection of haunted writing, in which poets present their posthumous work as if they were alive. The brilliant translation by Vitor Pequeno is supplemented by an extensive afterword by Jeremy Fernando, who traces what it means to speak through the other.
