Book excerpt: "The Doulton Lambeth Wares by Desmond Eyles is the classic reference book on the products of Royal Doulton's famous factory in London but the original edition has been out of print for many years. It is hoped that this new edition, revised by Louise Irvine, will be even more useful for collectors of nineteenth and twentieth-century Lambeth Wares. There are now more than 700 colour plates and 150 black and white illustrations featuring designs by leading studio artists, such as Tinworth, the Barlow sisters, Marshall, Pope and Butler, as well as many examples by lesser-known assistants. All the different types of Doulton Lambeth Wares are depicted in full colour, for example Silicon, Faience, Impasto, Marqueterie, Chine and Hunting Ware, so that collectors can identify pieces when they appear on the market."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Download or read book The World of British Stoneware written by Frank L. Wood and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2014-03-28 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly three hundred years, from the late seventeenth to the middle twentieth century, stoneware was a major part of British ceramic output. This book concentrates on that particular area of ceramics, and covers the history and development of stoneware in all its many variations. Those variations range widely from brown salt-glazed tavern wares to such refined wares as jasper, Castleford ware and the later art wares, to name a few. A specific aspect of the book is to give anyone interested in ceramics, and collectors in particular, very comprehensive information on the manufacture of the different types of stoneware, from the preparation of the clay, or body, through the forming, decorating and glazing techniques to the firing. Such is likely to provide a greater appreciation and understanding of stoneware in its many variations. There are separate chapters on the later art wares and their makers, bottle wares, and marks and identification, as well as an appendix listing manufacturers, a comprehensive glossary and a list of museums. The illustrations cover a wide range of types. Many books on ceramics include information on stoneware, but this in-depth book benefits from the experience of a writer who is both a collector and ex-potter.
Download or read book Planet Savers written by Kevin Desmond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protecting the planet is everyone's work. But we all have our own heroes in whatever area we are working. Planet Savers brings together the varied stories of the hundreds of movers and shakers that have spoken up throughout history and taken action to defend the world from pollution, deforestation, species loss and climate change. From Theodore Roosevelt to Al Gore; from Francis of Assisi to David Attenborough – and from hundreds more men and women that you will know little, if anything, about. Scientists, artists, business people, priests, lawyers, poets, politicians, activists and more, from every continent of the world. Their work has enthused us about the natural world and warned us that we must do much more to preserve it. The Indian woman who became the world's first environmental martyr; the Baptist Reverend who asked "What Would Jesus Drive?"; the Quaker big game hunter who set up the first conservation organisation; the Shakespearian actor who revolutionised organic gardening; and the housewife whose campaign against toxic waste forced a President to act. The book is a cornucopia of people who from time immemorial have put their careers, reputations and lives on the line to protect our planet from its governing inhabitants – the human race. Today, as thousands of species of animals and plants are faced with extinction, thousands of years of indigenous knowledge is lost in the face of technological advance, and we become more and more aware of the potential doomsday scenario of a warming world, we need Planet Savers more than ever. Our inspiration can be the 301 environmental lives portrayed in this book. These people cared enough to do something about it. Planet Savers is both a tribute and a catalyst: a tribute to the people that loved the planet enough to want to act to save it, and a catalyst for the people who will be inspired to act after reading it. New Planet Savers are at work right now in rainforests and megacities; in community centres and boardrooms; at road protests and in courtrooms, all over the world. If this book has one great aim it is to inspire you, the reader, to join them. It is a book that every home should own.

Download or read book Ceramics and Globalization written by Neil Ewins and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neil Ewins' study of the Staffordshire potteries in a period of great global change traces how ceramics production has been affected by globalisation in both familiar and unexpected ways. Although many manufacturers such as Wedgwood initially moved production to cheaper labour markets in East Asia, others remained in or returned to England once it became clear that outsourcing manufacturing was affecting the brand value and customer perception of their products. Neil Ewins explores the complex behaviour of the UK ceramics industry, using a combination of evidence from the press, trade journals, ceramic objects, and primary interview evidence of manufacturers, retailers and a ceramic designer. Ewins suggests that, although the surface designs of UK ceramics invariably reflect diverse cultural and stylistic influences, a notion of authenticity often still resides in the place and context in which the ceramic product was originally made. Overall, the book argues that UK ceramics remain culturally complex because of issues of supply and demand, and ties to heritage, imagined or otherwise. Within a context of globalization, the book highlights compelling issues which have huge ramifications on UK manufacturing futures.
