  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Oral Cephalosporins written by Robert C. Moellering and published by S Karger Ag. This book was released on 1995 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an excellent survey of the chemistry, microbiology, pharmacology and clinical use of the oral cephalosporins in general and the newer agents in particular. The cephalosporins have long provided satisfactory treatment for many disorders without causing serious side effects; and over the past fifty years forms with different antimicrobial, pharmacologic and toxicologic properties have been developed. Despite the broad spectrum of their activity against a large variety of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, the third-generation oral cephalosporins including the prodrug esters do not work against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, methicillin-resistant staphylococci, enterococci or Bacteroides species. Many, however, are suitable for treating infections of the respiratory and urinary tracts and of the skin and its structure, as well as certain sexually-transmitted diseases. Authors consider other possible uses, against multi-resistant Enterobacteriaceae for instance, but also point out the limitations of the oral cephalosporins. For those working in the fields of infectious disease, bacteriology, chemotherapy, pharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics, this book is a valuable source of authoritative information.

Book Ethics in Obstetrics and Gynecology

Download or read book Ethics in Obstetrics and Gynecology written by Laurence B. McCullough and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive and clinically practical approach to ethics in the everyday practice of obstetrics and gynecology. The topics the authors address include: contraception, abortion, selective termination of multifetal pregnancies, gynecologic cancer, in vitro fertilization, surrogacy, prenatal diagnosis, fetal therapy, cephalocentisis, prematurity, HIV infection, and court ordered cesarean delivery. The issues involved in making decisions in many of these areas are a source of conflict, and lead to crisis between the physician and patient. One of the book's strengths is its emphasis on prevention and, if prevention fails, management, of the conflicts and crises which arise in these areas of medicine. The authors develop their preventative and management strategies on the basis of a framework for bioethics in the clinical setting. This framework is rigorously established and defended. The authors argue that four virtues -- self effacement, self sacrifice, compassion, and integrity -- generate the physician's obligation to protect and promote the patient's interest. They then identify the three types of patient's interests -- social role interests, subjective interests, and deliberative interests -- and they reinterpret the ethical principles of beneficence and respect for autonomy in terms of these. The concept of the fetus as patient, the physician's obligation to third parties, and the moral standing of fathers and family members are also addressed. The implications of their argument sets the stage for the discussions of prevention and management in the remaining sections of the book. Ethics in Obstetrics and Gynecology is a unique addition to the literature in both biomedical ethics and obstetrics and gynecology. It demonstrates that ethics should be regarded as an essential part of obstetrics and gynecology, and that clinical practice is incomplete without i

Book Epigenetic pathways in PTSD how traumatic experiences leave their signature on the genome

Download or read book Epigenetic pathways in PTSD how traumatic experiences leave their signature on the genome written by Tania L Roth and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research topic focuses on epigenetic components of PTSD. Epigenetic mechanisms are a class of molecular mechanisms by which environmental influences, including stress, can interact with the genome to have long-term consequences for brain plasticity and behavior. Articles herein include empirical reports and reviews that link stress and trauma with epigenetic alterations in humans and animal models of early- or later-life stress. Themes present throughout the collection include: DNA methylation is a useful biomarker of stress and treatment outcome in humans; epigenetic programming of stress-sensitive physiological systems early in development confers an enhanced risk on disease development upon re-exposure to trauma or stress; and, long-lived fear memories are associated with epigenetic alterations in fear memory and extinction brain circuitry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memory Evolutive Systems; Hierarchy, Emergence, Cognition provides comprehensive and comprehensible coverage of Memory Evolutive Systems (MEM). Written by the developers of the MEM, the book proposes a mathematical model for autonomous evolutionary systems based on the Category Theory of mathematics. It describes a framework to study and possibly simulate the structure of living systems and their dynamic behavior. This book contributes to understanding the multidisciplinary interfaces between mathematics, cognition, consciousness, biology and the study of complexity. It is organized into three parts. Part A deals with hierarchy and emergence and covers such topics as net of interactions and categories; the binding problem; and complexifications and emergence. Part B is about MEM while Part C discusses MEM applications to cognition and consciousness. The book explores the characteristics of a complex evolutionary system, its differences from inanimate physical systems, and its functioning and evolution in time, from its birth to its death. This book is an ideal reference for researchers, teachers and students in pure mathematics, computer science, cognitive science, study of complexity and systems theory, Category Theory, biological systems theory, and consciousness theory. It would also be of interest to both individuals and institutional libraries.
