Download or read book Motorcycle written by Steven E. Alford and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2008-01-03 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Easy Rider. Motocross Grand Prix. James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause. The motorcycle is a global icon of untamed freedom, symbolizing a daring and reckless lifestyle of adventure. Yet there are few books that chronicle how and when this legendary vehicle roared down the open road. Motorcycle explores the roots of the rebel’s ultimate ride. After early incarnations as a nineteenth-century steam-powered bicycle and multi-wheeled vehicles, the modern motorcycle came into its own as a cheap, mobile military asset during World War I. From there, it rapidly spread through modern culture as a symbol of rebellion and subversive power, and Motorcycle tracks the symbolic role that the bike has played in literature, art, and film. The authors also investigate the international subcultures that revolve around the motorcycle and scooter. They chart the emergence of American biker culture in the 1950s, when decommissioned fighter pilots sought new ways to satiate their desire for thrill and danger, and explore how the motorcycle came to represent the untamed nonconformity of the American West. In contrast, smaller scooters such as the Vespa and moped became the utilitarian vehicle of choice in space-starved metropolises across Europe and Asia. Ultimately, the authors argue, the motorbike is the exemplary Modernist object, dependent on the perfect balance of man and machine. An unprecedented and wholly engrossing account, Motorcycle is an essential reading for the Harley-Davidson roadhog, bike collector, or anyone who’s felt the power of the unmistakable king of the road.

Book Classic British Motorcycles

Download or read book Classic British Motorcycles written by Colin Jackson and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the modern era, mass-produced motorcycles tend to be Japanese or Italian, with the ‘big four’ oriental manufacturers dominating the market. However, this wasn’t always the case. Until the 1950s, and even into the ’60s, British makers such as Scott, Rudge, BSA, Norton and Vincent ruled the roost. These legendary companies sold their bikes around the world, winning racing championships and setting speed records as they went. They, and many smaller British firms like them, are motorcycling’s founding companies. This is the story of those pioneering firms, whose engineers – many self-taught – were fired by racing ambition, commercial rivalry, patriotic duty and, above all, a passion for innovation. Superbly illustrated with over 150 colour pictures, many previously unpublished, Classic British Motorcycles is a captivating and highly informative account of the men, machines, race meetings and world events that shaped the development of the motorcycle from its bicycle origins. Illustrtations: colour photographs throughout

Book Book of the Post War Douglas All Models 1948 1957

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 136 pages, 39 black & white illustrations, size 5.5 x 8.5 inches. Originally published by Douglas Ltd UK, this book consists of two original factory maintenance manuals combined together in a single publication. The first 78-page section deals with the complete 1948-1951 range, including the Mark III, Mark IV, Mark V, 80 & 90 Plus models and the appropriate Sports, De Luxe & Competition derivatives. The second 56-page section is specific to the Dragonfly. As to be expected from a factory publication, it includes complete technical data, service and maintenance information and detailed instructions for the repair and overhaul of the major mechanical and electrical components. There is adequate detailed text and diagrams to assist in major refurbishing such as an engine rebuild or even a complete renovation. Obviously, the predominant focus of these manuals is the post-war models that were manufactured from 1948 until production ended in 1957 but much of the information will also be of interest to owners of the pre-war models. These factory manuals have been unavailable since Douglas was purchased by Westinghouse Brake & Signal in 1957 and they are becoming increasingly more difficult to find on the secondary market. We are pleased to be able to offer these reproductions as a service to all Douglas motorcycle enthusiasts worldwide.
