Download or read book English Lessons written by Andrea Lucado and published by WaterBrook. This book was released on 2017 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Questions Would Teach Her More Than the Answers It wasn't long after arriving in Oxford for graduate school that twenty-two-year-old Andrea Lucado - preacher's daughter from Texas - faced not only culture shock, a severe lack of coffee, but also some unexpected hard questions: Who am I? Who is God? Why do I believe what I believe? "So many nights in Oxford, I felt like the details of my faiths were getting fuzzier. Nights turned restless with the questions and the thoughts. I questioned God's existence and the doubt, it was getting into my bones...." In this engaging memoir, Andrea speaks to all of us who wrestle with faith, doubt, and spiritual identity. Join Andrea as she navigates the Thames River, the Oxford Atheist Society, romance in ancient pubs--and a new perspective on who God is. As Andrea learned, sometimes it takes letting go of old ideas to discover lasting truth.

Book How to Know Without a Shadow of Doubt What God Has Called and Destined You to Do

Download or read book How to Know Without a Shadow of Doubt What God Has Called and Destined You to Do written by Henry A. Payne and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-10-11 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did I write this book? The answer to this question is very simple and plain. I received instructions from my Lord Jesus Christ during the first quarter of 2009 to write this book. After I received my call from the Lord Jesus Christ to go and make disciples of all nations, he began using me to hold bible studies in the market place, on different jobs where I worked, on the streets, over the radio in several states, and across different pulpits, not only where I pastored but in other churches as well—this started from blue collar workers to top notch executives. For several years I had the opportunity of visiting with different Christians from all walks of life and the Lord gave me two questions to ask them: 1. Are you a born again believer? Their answer would be Oh yes for several years now. 2. Do you have any idea of what God has called and destined you to do? Only 2 out of 10 would say I believe so. During several years of research I’ve found out that 80 percent of the body of Christ has no idea of what they are called to do in this earth. I had no idea of why God had me researching these questions for so many years, but now I can clearly see that he had this book in mind. What an awesome God we serve! While working in the Merger and Acquisition business in January of 2009 in Dallas, Texas, I was visiting with a firm’s director who is a very sharp Christian brother whom I’ve admired a lot because of his knowledge of the business world. I asked him the second research question; Do you know what God has called and destined you to do? His answer was no, and then I asked a colleague of mine the same question, his answer was also no. So while driving home that afternoon from the firm, just as you turn on a light in a dark room to see what’s in the room, light came on in my spirit, and there was a voice with that light saying, write a book on How to Know Without A Shadow of Doubt What God Has Called and Destined You To Do. So in obedience to my Lord Jesus Christ, here is the book that the Lord has given me instructions to write. This is not a book to read in your leisure time and then stick it somewhere on the shelf in your library, but this is a small compact book of revelation for application to help you know what you are called to do and help you to get in your place of assignment. God’s whole creation is waiting for the body of Christ to get in our place of destiny and do what we are called to do. God finished his work in six days! Jesus on the cross said that it is finished and gave up the ghost, died, and was placed in a borrowed tomb. He has risen on the third day and is now seated on the right hand of the Father making intercessions for the saints in the earth and has passed the Paton to the sons of God in the earth. Jesus and the Father are in heaven looking and waiting for the sons of God to complete our assignment that has been given to us by our Lord Jesus Christ, but the body of Christ is out of their place and have no idea of what they have been called and assigned to do. This book will help the body of Christ to find out what we have been called and assigned by the Lord to do so that we can all get in the place of assignment and complete the work that been assigned to our hands to do. The Blessing of the Lord is upon you!

Book excerpt: In January 2002, forty-six-year-old Christa Worthington was found stabbed to death in the kitchen of her Truro, Cape Cod, cottage, her curly-haired toddler clutching her body. A former Vassar girl and scion of a prominent local family, Christa had abandoned a glamorous career as a fashion writer for a simpler life on the Cape, where she had an affair with a married fisherman and had his child. After her murder, evidence pointed toward several local men who had known her. Yet in 2005, investigators arrested Christopher McCowen, a thirty-four-year-old African-American garbage collector with an IQ of 76. The local headlines screamed, “Black Trash Hauler Ruins Beautiful White Family” and “Black Murderer Apprehended in Fashion Writer Slaying,” while the sole evidence against McCowen was a DNA match showing that he’d had sex with Worthington prior to her murder. There were no fingerprints, no witnesses, and although the state medical examiner acknowledged there was no evidence of rape, the defendant was convicted after a five-week trial replete with conflicting testimony, accusations of crime scene contamination, and police misconduct—and was condemned to three lifetime sentences in prison with no parole. Rarely has a homicide trial been refracted so clearly through the prism of those who engineered it, and in Reasonable Doubt, bestselling author and biographer Peter Manso is determined to rectify what has become one of the most grossly unjust verdicts in modern trial history. In his riveting new book he bares the anatomy of a horrific murder—as well as the political corruption and racism that appear to be endemic in one of America’s most privileged playgrounds, Cape Cod. Exhaustively researched and vividly accessible, Reasonable Doubt is a no-holds-barred account of not only Christa Worthington’s murder but also of a botched investigation and a trial that was rife with bias. Manso dug deep into the case, and the results were explosive. The Cape DA indicted the author, threatening him with fifty years in prison. The trial and conviction of Christopher McCowen for rape and murder should worry American citizens, and should prompt us to truly examine the lip service we pay to the presumption of innocence . . . and to reasonable doubt. With this explosive and challenging book Manso does just that.

But things with his boyfriend and fellow detective, John-Henry Somerset, are never easy, and they’ve been more complicated lately for two reasons: Somers’s ex-wife and daughter. No matter what Hazard does, he can’t seem to get away from the most important women in his boyfriend’s life. While Hazard struggles with his new reality (changing dirty diapers, just to start), a bizarre murder offers a distraction. John Oscar Walden, the leader of a local cult, is found dead by the police, and the case falls to Hazard and Somers. The investigation takes the two detectives into the cult’s twisted relationships and the unswerving demands of power and faith. But the deeper Hazard looks into the cult, the deeper he must look into his own past, where belief and reason have already clashed once. And as Hazard struggles to protect the most vulnerable of Walden’s victims, he uncovers a deeper, more vicious plot behind Walden’s murder, and Hazard finds himself doing what he never expected: racing to save the killer. Only, that is, if Somers doesn’t need him to babysit.

Book Doubt and the Demands of Democratic Citizenship

Download or read book Doubt and the Demands of Democratic Citizenship written by David R. Hiley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-06-26 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The triumph of democracy has been heralded as one of the greatest achievements of the twentieth century, yet it seems to be in a relatively fragile condition in the United States, if one is to judge by the proliferation of editorials, essays, and books that focus on politics and distrust of government. Doubt and the Demands of Democratic Citizenship explores the reasons for public discontent and proposes an account of democratic citizenship appropriate for a robust democracy. David Hiley argues that citizenship is more than participating in the electoral process. It requires a capacity to participate in the deliberative process with other citizens who might disagree, a capacity that combines deep convictions with a willingness to subject those convictions. Hiley develops his argument by examining the connection between doubt and democracy generally, as well as through case studies of Socrates, Montaigne, and Rousseau, interpreting them in light of contemporary issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shadows of Doubt reveals how deeply stereotypes distort our interactions, shape crime, and deform the criminal justice system. If you’re a robber, how do you choose your victims? As a police officer, how afraid are you of the young man you’re about to arrest? As a judge, do you think the suspect in front of you will show up in court if released from pretrial detention? As a juror, does the defendant seem guilty to you? Your answers may depend on the stereotypes you hold, and the stereotypes you believe others hold. In this provocative, pioneering book, economists Brendan O’Flaherty and Rajiv Sethi explore how stereotypes can shape the ways crimes unfold and how they contaminate the justice system through far more insidious, pervasive, and surprising paths than we have previously imagined. Crime and punishment occur under extreme uncertainty. Offenders, victims, police officers, judges, and jurors make high-stakes decisions with limited information, under severe time pressure. With compelling stories and extensive data on how people act as they try to commit, prevent, or punish crimes, O’Flaherty and Sethi reveal the extent to which we rely on stereotypes as shortcuts in our decision making. Sometimes it’s simple: Robbers tend to target those they stereotype as being more compliant. Other interactions display a complex and sometimes tragic interplay of assumptions: “If he thinks I’m dangerous, he might shoot. I’ll shoot first.” Shadows of Doubt shows how deeply stereotypes are implicated in the most controversial criminal justice issues of our time, and how a clearer understanding of their effects can guide us toward a more just society.
