Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study deals with the theory and phenomenology of transverse spin effects in high-energy hadronic physics. Contrary to common past belief, it is now rather clear that these effects are far from irrelevant. A decade or so of intense theoretical work has shed much light on the subject and brought to the surface an entire class of new phenomena, which now await thorough experimental investigation. Over the next few years a number of experiments worldwide (at DESY, CERN and Brookhaven) will run with transversely polarised particles, providing data that will enrich our knowledge of the transverse spin structure of hadrons. The principle aim of this work is to assess the state of the art as it stands in 2002. After a few introductory remarks (Chapter 1), in the first part (Chapters 2-4) attention is directed to polarised deep inelastic scattering (DIS), particularly DIS on transversely polarised targets, which probes the transverse spin structure function g2. This structure function is examined within the framework of the quark-parton model and its improvement via perturbative QCD. The existing data are reviewed and commented on (for completeness and comparison, a brief presentation of longitudinally polarised DIS and of the helicity structure of the proton is provided). The second part of the book (Chapters 5-8) focuses on the transverse polarisation of quarks, the so-called "transversity". The partonic content and the QCD evolution of the transversity distributions are presented in detail. The phenomenology of transversity is then studied in the context of Drell-Yan processes and of semi-inclusive lepto- and hadroproduction. The interpretation of data on single-spin asymmetries is discussed and, finally, the prospects for future measurements are reviewed.

Download or read book High Energy Spin Physics written by Karl-Heinz Althoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 9th International Symposium on High Energy Spin Physics, held in Bonn, 6-15 September 1990, attracted 280 participants from 16 countries. This meet ing covered not only fundamental experimental and theoretical spin phenomena but also technological developments in polarized beams and targets. For the first time intermediate energy spin physics with electron machines was discussed extensively. Highlights included the work on polarized high energy electron beams at LEP and TRISTAN and the failure of the standard model in connection with spin phenomena, in particular the growth of the spin asymmetry in violent proton-proton scattering. Also the presentation of different models in con nection with the still-unsolved 'proton spin crisis' and the proposals for four different experiments to determine the spin structure functions caused lively and sometimes controversial discussions. The Organizing Committee would like to thank all speakers for their excel lent talks, the conveners for the organization of the parallel sessions, and the International Advisory Committee for their advice. Four workshops preceded the symposium. 160 participants, among them many young physicists, discussed mainly technological spin problems. These papers are published in separate proceedings. We gratefully acknowledge the enthusiastic help of the members of our institute in preparing and running the conference and the workshops, especially Mrs. D. FaSbender, Mrs. E. Wendorf, Mrs. J. Wetzel, and Dr. U.Idschok.

Book Deep Inelastic Positron Proton Scattering in the High Momentum Transfer Regime of HERA

Download or read book Deep Inelastic Positron Proton Scattering in the High Momentum Transfer Regime of HERA written by Ulrich F. Katz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About three decades after the first experiments on deep inelastic lepton hadron scattering began to investigate the structure of hadrons, the history of this fruitful field of particle physics continues in the broad spectrum of research performed at the electron and positron proton collider HERA at DESY, where the multipurpose detectors ZEUS and H1 access ep scattering at a center of mass energy of 300 GeV and explore as yet uncharted kinematic realms of deep inelastic scattering. After the first years of data taking at HERA, each of the experiments has collected a total of roughly 40 pb 1 of e+p data, yielding sensitivity to deep inelastic e+p interactions at high four momentum transfers, Q2, where typi cal cross sections drop into the subpicobarn regime. This kinematic domain is characterized by electroweak unification, manifesting itself most markedly in the neutral and charged current cross sections, which approach an equal order of magnitude as Q2 rises above the square of the W and Z masses. Consequently, HERA allows, for the first time, studies of both types of pro cesses simultaneously with the same initial state conditions and in the same detector, and thus we can investigate the interplay of electroweak and strong forces governing the respective cross sections.

Book excerpt: Transversity 2008, the second workshop on OC Transverse polarization phenomena in hard processesOCO follows the first one held in Como after three years. As in that case, the event comes at the end of a two-years project financed by the Italian Ministry of Education. In the time between the two Workshops, decisive steps towards the revealing of the transverse spin structure of the proton were taken on both the theoretical and experimental sides. The milestone of the first extraction of Transversity and the Sivers function for the u- and d-quarks deserves a special mention. In the same period, historic experiments that in the last decade contributed to the first pioneering measurements in the SIDIS sector, have concluded their data taking, and their place is being taken by upgrades of existing or new facilities. These are the result of the new interesting phenomena which are appearing and call for additional experimental information and novel experimental techniques. Over 80 physicists took part in the Workshop. Equally involved were experimentalists and theoreticians engaged in investigating the nature of transverse spin. The heterogeneous public favoured vivid discussions and fruitful exchange of up-to-date theoretical and experimental ideas on this constantly evolving subject."

Book The First Measurement of the Differential Cross section of Electroweak W plus minus W plus minus jj Production at 13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Vector boson scattering is one of the recent remarkable observations at the Large Hadron Collider. The longitudinal polarization modes of the massive vector bosons are strongly tied to the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism. With the Standard Model predicted Higgs boson playing a crucial role in regularizing the scattering amplitude of these longitudinally polarized bosons, vector boson scattering is a pivotal process in experimentally probing the symmetry breaking mechanism. A golden channel for measuring vector boson scattering at the collider is the electroweak production of two $W$ bosons with the same electric charges. Owing to its largest quark- to gluon- induced production ratio among other di-boson combinations, the process was also the first target of the ATLAS vector boson scattering program, with evidence made in 2014 and observation in 2019. This thesis presents the first measurement of the differential cross-section with the ATLAS experiment at $\sqrt{s}=13$\,TeV using 139\,fb$^{-1}$ datasets of proton-proton collisions. The process is studied in the leptonic decay channels of the $W$ bosons, effectively suppressing many Standard Model backgrounds. The process $pp \rightarrow l^{\pm} \nu l^{\pm} \nu jj $ is measured with the final state consisting of two leptons of like charges, two jets, and missing transverse energy. The characteristic vector boson scattering signature of two tagging jets, with a large di-jet invariant mass, separated by large angles, is used to tag electroweak-induced production. A combination of Monte Carlo-based predictions and data-driven approaches is used to estimate the various backgrounds. A statistical model of profile likelihood is used to constrain the background predictions and reduce the uncertainties following which the events are unfolded, and the cross-section is extracted. The fiducial differential cross-sections are measured in the leptonic channel as a function of several kinematic variables and are found to be consistent with the Standard Model predictions within uncertainties. An experimental precision of 10.2\% is achieved for the fiducial cross-section, and the measurement is unprecedented in precision and granularity for the process. The integrated fiducial cross-section is $3.51 \pm 0.27\,\text{(stat)}\,\pm 0.23\,\text{(syst)}\,\text{fb}$ and agrees with the leading order prediction of $2.97^{+0.28}_{-0.24}\,\text{fb} $ simulated by MadGraph+Herwig7 within uncertainties
