Download or read book Saying Something written by Ingrid Monson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-02-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fresh look at the neglected rhythm section in jazz ensembles shows that the improvisational interplay among drums, bass, and piano is just as innovative, complex, and spontaneous as the solo. Ingrid Monson juxtaposes musicians' talk and musical examples to ask how musicians go about "saying something" through music in a way that articulates identity, politics, and race. Through interviews with Jaki Byard, Richard Davis, Sir Roland Hanna, Billy Higgins, Cecil McBee, and others, she develops a perspective on jazz improvisation that has "interactiveness" at its core, in the creation of music through improvisational interaction, in the shaping of social communities and networks through music, and in the development of cultural meanings and ideologies that inform the interpretation of jazz in twentieth-century American cultural life. Replete with original musical transcriptions, this broad view of jazz improvisation and its emotional and cultural power will have a wide audience among jazz fans, ethnomusicologists, and anthropologists.

Download or read book Textbook of Bone Metastases written by Claude Jasmin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-09-27 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The epidemiological and clinical importance of bone metastases has long been recognised. For example, the incidence of bone metastases in breast and prostate cancers is 70%, whereas it is only 30 to 40% in metastatic lung cancer. In clinical terms, bone metastases have substantial negative effects on the patient's quality of life. Bone metastases have generally received insufficient attention because of the difficulty in quantifying them, which has left them outside the scope of therapeutic trials This textbook is the result of the remarkable progress made in the understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in osteogenesis and osteolysis, and their development for therapeutic purposes. The treatment of malignant hypercalcaemia has also been revolutionised by the use of bisphosphonates. The Textbook of Bone Metastases presents a broad approach to recent progress in all fields related to bone metastases, ranging from epidemiology to the physiopathology of bone metastases and therapeutics. It provides a better understanding of recent advances and, more importantly, will give clinicians all the information needed to help them in the clinical and therapeutic management of patients with bone metastases.
Download or read book Charlie Parker Composer written by Henry Martin and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Charlie Parker, Composer is the first assessment of a major jazz composer's oeuvre in its entirety. Providing analytical discussion of each of Parker's works, this study combines music-theoretical, historical, and philosophical perspectives. A variety of analytical techniques are brought to bear on Parker's compositions, including application of a revised Schenkerian approach to the music that was developed through the author's prior publications. After a review of Parker's life emphasizing his musical training and involvement in composition, the book proceeds by considering the types of Parker pieces as categorized by overall form and harmony and the amount of preplanned music they contain. The historical circumstances of each piece are reviewed, and, in some cases, sources of the ideas of the most important tunes are explored. The introduction includes a discussion of the ontology of a jazz composition. The view is advanced that the Western concept of a music composition needs to be expanded to embrace practices typical of jazz composition and forming a significant part of Parker's work. While focusing on Parker's more conventional tunes, the book also considers his large-scale melodic formulas. Two formulas in particular are arguably compositional, since they are repeated in subsequent performances of the same piece. As part of the research for this book, all of Parker's copyright submissions to the Library of Congress were examined and photographed. The book reproduces the four of them that were copied by Parker himself"--
Download or read book What can simple brains teach us about how vision works written by Davide Zoccolan and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2015-11-18 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vision is the process of extracting behaviorally-relevant information from patterns of light that fall on retina as the eyes sample the outside world. Traditionally, nonhuman primates (macaque monkeys, in particular) have been viewed by many as the animal model-of-choice for investigating the neuronal substrates of visual processing, not only because their visual systems closely mirror our own, but also because it is often assumed that “simpler” brains lack advanced visual processing machinery. However, this narrow view of visual neuroscience ignores the fact that vision is widely distributed throughout the animal kingdom, enabling a wide repertoire of complex behaviors in species from insects to birds, fish, and mammals. Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in alternative animal models for vision research, especially rodents. This resurgence is partly due to the availability of increasingly powerful experimental approaches (e.g., optogenetics and two-photon imaging) that are challenging to apply to their full potential in primates. Meanwhile, even more phylogenetically distant species such as birds, fish, and insects have long been workhorse animal models for gaining insight into the core computations underlying visual processing. In many cases, these animal models are valuable precisely because their visual systems are simpler than the primate visual system. Simpler systems are often easier to understand, and studying a diversity of neuronal systems that achieve similar functions can focus attention on those computational principles that are universal and essential. This Research Topic provides a survey of the state of the art in the use of animal models of visual functions that are alternative to macaques. It includes original research, methods articles, reviews, and opinions that exploit a variety of animal models (including rodents, birds, fishes and insects, as well as small New World monkey, the marmoset) to investigate visual function. The experimental approaches covered by these studies range from psychophysics and electrophysiology to histology and genetics, testifying to the richness and depth of visual neuroscience in non-macaque species.

This book was released on 2023-09-28 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are very pleased to put forth the first edition of 'Laboratory Manual of Pharmacology II'. We believe that this laboratory manual will fulfill the aspirations of pharmacology teachers and students too. This manual is prepared as per PCI Education Regulations, 2014 for Degree Course in Pharmacy. This manual is designed for 'outcome-based education' and each experiment is arranged in a uniform way such as practical significance, practical outcomes (PrOs) and its mapping with course outcomes, minimum theoretical background, resources used, procedure, precautions, observations, result, conclusion, references and related questions. In addition, the mapping of PrOs with blooms taxonomy level is provided to know the level of learning. Moreover, the readings/observations/recorded graphs are given for the easy and in depth understanding of students. The experiments given are as per the OECD guidelines. Teacher and students have to use suitable software to know the demonstration of the experiment. The tables are given to record the observations from the software. In addition, the questions are given at the end of experiments to increase the knowledge of students. This manual is a sincere effort to improve the critical thinking of students so that every student will understand the objective of each experiment and perform calculation smoothly. Theory of each experiment is given in all sixteen experiments making the manual more informative and interesting. We acknowledge the help and co-operation extended by various people in bringing out this manual. We are highly indebted to the authors of various books and articles mentioned in bibliography which became a major source of information for writing this manual. We also thank the publishers, designers and printers who graciously worked hard to publish this manual in time. We hope that this manual will assist students in understanding concepts, principles, and performing procedures. We wish you all the best!"
