Book Double Gyroid Structured Functional Materials

Download or read book Double Gyroid Structured Functional Materials written by Maik Rudolf Johann Scherer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-25 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of new high-tech applications and devices has created a seemingly insatiable demand for novel functional materials with enhanced and tailored properties. Such materials can be achieved by three-dimensional structuring on the nanoscale, giving rise to a significant enhancement of particular functional characteristics which stems from the ability to access both surface/interface and bulk properties. The highly ordered, bicontinuous double-gyroid morphology is a fascinating and particularly suitable 3D nanostructure for this purpose due to its highly accessible surface area, connectivity, narrow pore diameter distribution and superb structural stability. The presented study encompasses a wide range of modern nanotechnology techniques in a highly versatile bottom-up nanopatterning strategy that splits the fabrication process into two successive steps: the preparation of mesoporous double-gyroid templates utilizing diblock copolymer self-assembly, and their replication with a functional material employing electrochemical deposition and atomic layer deposition. The double-gyroid structured materials discussed include metals, metal oxides, and conjugated polymers, which are applied and characterized in high-performance devices, such as electrochromic displays, supercapacitors, chemical sensors and photovoltaics. This publication addresses a wide range of readers, from researchers and specialists who are professionally active in the field, to more general readers interested in chemistry, nanoscience and physics.

Book Gyroid Optical Metamaterials

Download or read book Gyroid Optical Metamaterials written by James A. Dolan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-04 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores the fabrication of gyroid-forming block copolymer templates and the optical properties of the resulting gyroid optical metamaterials, significantly contributing to our understanding of both. It demonstrates solvent vapour annealing to improve the long-range order of the templates, and investigates the unique crystallisation behaviour of their semicrystalline block. Furthermore, it shows that gyroid optical metamaterials that exhibit only short-range order are optically equivalent to nanoporous gold, and that the anomalous linear dichroism of gyroid optical metamaterials with long-range order is the result of the surface termination of the bulk gyroid morphology. Optical metamaterials are artificially engineered materials that, by virtue of their structure rather than their chemistry, may exhibit various optical properties not otherwise encountered in nature (e.g. a negative refractive index). However, these structures must be significantly smaller than the wavelength of visible light and are therefore challenging to fabricate using traditional “top down” techniques. Instead, a “bottom up” approach can be used, whereby optical metamaterials are fabricated via templates created by the self-assembly of block-copolymers. One such morphology is the gyroid, a chiral, continuous and triply periodic cubic network found in a range of natural and synthetic self-assembled systems.

Book Optical Metamaterials by Block Copolymer Self Assembly

Download or read book Optical Metamaterials by Block Copolymer Self Assembly written by Stefano Salvatore and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metamaterials are artificially designed materials engineered to acquire their properties by their specific structure rather than their composition. They are considered a major scientific breakthrough and have attracted enormous attention over the past decade. The major challenge in obtaining an optical metamaterial active at visible frequencies is the fabrication of complex continuous metallic structures with nano metric features. This thesis presents the fabrication and characterization of optical metamaterials made by block copolymer self assembly. This approach allows fabrication of an intriguing and complex continuous 3D architecture called a gyroid, which is replicated into active plasmonic materials such as gold. The optical properties endowed by this particular gyroid geometry include reduction of plasma frequency, extraordinarily enhanced optical transmission, and a predicted negative refractive index. To date, this is the 3D optical metamaterial with the smallest features ever made.

Book Nanostructure Formation of Inorganic Materials from the Self assembly of Highly Amphiphilic Block Copolymers

Download or read book Nanostructure Formation of Inorganic Materials from the Self assembly of Highly Amphiphilic Block Copolymers written by Ju Ho Song and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High performance catalysts or energy devices such as solar cells and batteries which involve reactions and transport problems require nanostructured functional materials that are highly ordered mesoporous and crystalline materials. The self-assembly based structure direction of functional inorganic materials by block copolymers (BCPs) is a promising route because it combines mesoporosity at the 2-50 nm length scale, high surface areas and full control over morphology. This work explored solubility design guidelines that facilitate the coassembly of titania and poly(isoprene-b-ethylene oxide) (PI-b-PEO) which is a highly amphiphilic block copolymer. This approach enabled the fabrication of highly ordered crystalline titania. The pore size control of mesoporous crystalline titania was also accomplished by applying different molecular weight PI-bPEOs, and the highly ordered titania with the largest cylindrical pores (>30 nm) was reported without the use of pore-expanders. Nanostructured titania membranes were developed for water purification applications based on the knowledge from the previous part because inorganic membranes have superior thermal and chemical stabilities over polymer membranes. The mesoporous titania membranes with different pore size were successfully fabricated on porous disc substrates from both large and small molar mass PI-b-PEOs and presented an excellent molecular weight cut-off performances with high permeability, which would provide a huge potential to be applied in many ultrafiltration areas due to its self-cleaning characteristics from the photocatalytic activity. Finally, an ABC triblock terpolymer system was studied as an extension of the BCP self-assembly based structure direction of inorganic materials because these terpolymers allow wider composition windows for ordered network structures that have advantages such as 3-D connectivity and enhanced mechanical properties. In this work, the ternary morphology map of PI-b-PS-b-PEO and aluminisolicate sols was successfully constructed, which reveals 10 distinct morphologies along with particularly wide composition windows (2-13 vol%) for ordered network morphologies. This morphology map could be used as a model to predict the structure direction of other functional inorganic materials and a highly ordered network titania composite with core-shell double gyroid structure (cs-GD) was demonstrated as an example.

Book Electrochromic Materials and Devices

Download or read book Electrochromic Materials and Devices written by Roger J. Mortimer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrochromic materials can change their properties under the influence of an electrical voltage or current. Different classes of materials show this behavior such as transition metal oxides, conjugated polymers, metal-coordinated complexes and organic molecules. As the color change is persistent, the electric field needs only to be applied to initiate the switching, allowing for applications such as low-energy consumption displays, light-adapting mirrors in the automobile industry and smart windows for which the amount of transmitted light and heat can be controlled. The first part of this book describes the different classes and processing techniques of electrochromic materials. The second part highlights nanostructured electrochromic materials and device fabrication, and the third part focuses on the applications such as smart windows, adaptive camouflage, biomimicry, wearable displays and fashion. The last part rounds off the book by device case studies and environmental impact issues.
