Book excerpt: Red, a somewhat troubled agent of Britain's MI6, investigates a tribal massacre near the border of Kenya and South Sudan, and quickly discovers why the Kenyan authorities called MI6 for help: the slaughter has global implications, spanning well beyond the borders of Kenya and Africa. Red soon finds herself traveling down a rabbit hole into a perilous world created by a maniacal former KGB official whose goal is to restore the Soviet Union to its former glory. Along her investigation, she crosses paths with Jake Kessler, who is reporting on a human-interest story about the former body doubles for Saddam Hussein. The pair find their divergent investigations intersecting as they pursue the elusive Saddam double, Jabal Shamoon, whose exploits extend far beyond the Middle East. Red and Jake are forced to reconcile their past differences while investigating a two-pronged plot that, if successful, would destroy the power-center of Western civilization. But can Red and Jake learn to trust each other despite their tragic history? And will they be able to prevent the looming catastrophe?

Encrypting idioms into their typographic equivalents, Harry enlivens our everyday language and challenges readers to see that "time after time after time" or, at least, "more often than not" "the writing is on the wall." For fans of word puzzles, sudoku, crosswords, and all manner of mind games, Conundrum offers an artfully packaged, cleverly designed new challenge. Drawing upon, literally in this case, graphic puzzles that he began creating as a child, Harry's developed over 100 witty conundrums for this book that will stretch the mind as well as delight the senses. A member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale, a frequent lecturer and contributor to design discourse, an internationally recognized leader in design, and a founder of Lippa Pearce, one of the UK's most respected design agencies, Harry refines the way we see and communicate. Book Conundrum

Download or read book Conundrum written by Jan Morris and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2006-05-16 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the first-ever books on gender transition, this poignant memoir by a trans woman is “the best first-hand account ever written by a traveler across the boundaries of sex” (Newsweek). “A profoundly poetic story.” —The New York Times “An exquisite read.” —Maria Popova, The Marginalian The great travel writer Jan Morris was born James Morris. James Morris distinguished himself in the British military, became a successful and physically daring reporter, climbed mountains, crossed deserts, and established a reputation as a historian of the British empire. He was happily married, with several children. To all appearances, he was not only a man, but a man’s man. Except that appearances, as James Morris had known from early childhood, can be deeply misleading. James Morris had known all his conscious life that at heart he was a woman. Conundrum, one of the earliest books to discuss transsexuality with honesty and without prurience, tells the story of James Morris’ hidden life and how he decided to bring it into the open, as he resolved first on a hormone treatment and, second, on risky experimental surgery that would turn him into the woman that he truly was.

The single mum worried sick by a tax credit demand from HMRC to 'repay' thousands of pounds she never received; the family whose holiday was ruined because the Passport Office couldn't issue passports in time; the school that couldn't open at the start of term because CRB checks were being carried out by an organisation in meltdown; the farmers led to bankruptcy and even suicide by a Kafkaesque system for administering farm payments; and rail operators facing an uncertain future because the Department for Transport inadvertently landed the whole rail franchising system in chaos. Why is government getting it so wrong? Richard Bacon and Christopher Hope delve into the astonishing world of cock-ups and catastrophes and ponder why those at the top continue to fall short.

This book examines China's behaviour in the SCS from multiple perspectives like history, environment, law, trade, security, and its relations with Southeast Asian countries that have their own EEZ claims in the SCS, revealing that their actions align with their grand strategy of becoming a global and maritime superpower by 2050 with the Nine Dash Line at its centre. Book The Conundrum

  • ISBN : 1101560134
  • Pages : 205 pages

Download or read book The Conundrum written by David Owen and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-02-07 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Look out for David Owen's next book, Where the Water Goes. The Conundrum is a mind-changing manifesto about the environment, efficiency and the real path to sustainability. Hybrid cars, fast trains, compact florescent light bulbs, solar panels, carbon offsets: Everything you've been told about living green is wrong. The quest for a breakthrough battery or a 100 mpg car are dangerous fantasies. We are consumers, and we like to consume green and efficiently. But David Owen argues that our best intentions are still at cross purposes to our true goal - living sustainably and caring for our environment and the future of the planet. Efficiency, once considered the holy grail of our environmental problems, turns out to be part of the problem. Efforts to improve efficiency and increase sustainable development only exacerbate the problems they are meant to solve, more than negating the environmental gains. We have little trouble turning increases in efficiency into increases in consumption. David Owen's The Conundrum is an elegant nonfiction narrative filled with fascinating information and anecdotes takes you through the history of energy and the quest for efficiency. This is a book about the environment that will change how you look at the world. We should not be waiting for some geniuses to invent our way out of the energy and economic crisis we're in. We already have the technology and knowledge we need to live sustainably. But will we do it? That is the conundrum.

Book excerpt: Provocateurs Will Self and Ralph Steadman join forces in this post-millennial meditation on the vexed relationship between psyche and place in a globalised world, bringing together for the first time the very best of their 'Psychogeography' columns for the Independent. The introduction, 'Walking to New York', is both a prelude to the verbal and visual essays that make up this extraordinary collaboration, and a revealing exploration of the split in Self's Jewish-American-British psyche and its relationship to the political geography of the post-9/11 world. Ranging from the Scottish Highlands to Istanbul and from Morocco to Ohio, Will Self's engaging and disturbing vision is perfectly counter-pointed by Ralph Steadman's edgy and beautiful artwork.

Book Double Photoionisation Spectra of Molecules

Download or read book Double Photoionisation Spectra of Molecules written by John H. D. Eland and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first ever compendium of double photoionisation spectra, covering some 70 of the most important small and medium sized molecules and thus providing an essential starting point for studies of the consequences of ionisation by high energy photons in both terrestrial and astrophysical environments. It also provides a complete non-mathematical description of all the phenomena and pathways involved in molecular double photoionisation. Most spectra are presented with identification of the electronic states and leading orbital configurations. The technique of magnetic bottle time-of-flight electron spectroscopy, used for all the spectra, is fully explained and compared with other techniques. For each molecule, the book gives full references to relevant work by complementary techniques and to theoretical calculations. Written in a clear non-mathematical style, this book is accessible to students as well as more experienced researchers. The authors have designed the layout for easy retrieval of any desired spectrum through the systematic organisation and ordering of the compounds and thorough indexing. As well as being a compendium of spectra, the book is a textbook covering all the known phenomenological aspects of molecular double photoionisation. The important phenomena are first mentioned in the introductory chapters, and are discussed in more detail in connection with the groups of molecules and individual cases where they are most relevant. The most useful spectra will be available in digital form for users.

Book Remaking the Readymade

    Book Details:
  • Author : Adina Kamien-Kazhdan
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2018-05-11
  • ISBN : 0429843569
  • Pages : 433 pages

Download or read book Remaking the Readymade written by Adina Kamien-Kazhdan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Replication and originality are central concepts in the artistic oeuvres of Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray. Remaking the Readymade reveals the underlying and previously unexplored processes and rationales for the collaboration between Duchamp, Man Ray, and Arturo Schwarz on the replication of readymades and objects. The 1964 editioned replicas of the readymades sent shock waves through the art world. Even though the replicas undermined ideas of authorship and problematized the notion of identity and the artist, they paradoxically shared in the aura of the originals, becoming stand-ins for the readymades. Scholar-poet-dealer Arturo Schwarz played a crucial role, opening the door to joint or alternate authorship—an outstanding relationship between artist and dealer. By unearthing previously unpublished correspondence and documentary materials and combining this material with newly conducted exclusive interviews with key participants, Remaking the Readymade details heretofore unrevealed aspects of the technical processes involved in the (re)creation of iconic, long-lost Dada objects. Launched on the heels of the centenary of Duchamp’s Fountain, this new analysis intensifies and complicates our understanding of Duchamp and Man Ray’ initial conceptions, and raises questions about replication and authorship that will stimulate significant debate about the legacy of the artists, the continuing significance of their works, and the meaning of terms such as creativity, originality, and value in the formation of art.
