Book Valuation of Regulating Services of Ecosystems

Download or read book Valuation of Regulating Services of Ecosystems written by Pushpam Kumar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-07-13 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policy and management decisions are often made on financial grounds. However, the economic value of the benefits that people derive from ecosystems, that is, ecosystem services, may not be fully recognised and hence ecosystem considerations may not be incorporated adequately into decision-making processes. This is particularly true for regulating services, the benefits obtained from the regulation of ecosystem processes, the valuation of which requires an interdisciplinary approach. In essence, valuation is a problem solving strategy and a problem is a problem, it does not respect the boundary of any particular discipline. The valuation of regulating services is an evolving field of ecological economics. In this book, Professor Pushpam Kumar and Professor Michael D. Wood have invited some of the foremost international experts in the field of ecosystem services valuation to contribute chapters on the valuation of regulating services and highlight some of the main obstacles to the implementation and acceptance of these methodologies in the context of decision-making. The contributors explore the theoretical underpinning of valuation of ecosystem services and demonstrate ways in which these theories can be applied to case-specific problems in order to inform decision-making processes. This collection clarifies some of the doubt and uncertainty regarding the valuation of regulating services. Innovative methodologies in this field have started to emerge and in coming years there may be much further discussion on this topic as methodologies and understanding continue to evolve. This is a highly active area of interdisciplinary research with far reaching social and environmental implications, and this book should be of interest to those who are new to the field, as well as established experts, in moving both theory and practice forward.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Amelia Pilar Rauter
  • Publisher : Royal Society of Chemistry
  • Release : 2009-07
  • ISBN : 1847558801
  • Pages : 370 pages

Download or read book Carbohydrate Chemistry written by Amelia Pilar Rauter and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbohydrate Chemistry provides review coverage of all publications relevant to the chemistry of monosaccharides and oligosaccharides in a given year. The amount of research in this field appearing in the organic chemical literature is increasing because of the enhanced importance of the subject, especially in areas of medicinal chemistry and biology. In no part of the field is this more apparent than in the synthesis of oligosaccharides required by scientists working in glycobiology. Clycomedicinal chemistry and its reliance on carbohydrate synthesis is now very well established, for example, by the preparation of specific carbohydrate- based antigens, especially cancer-specific oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates. Coverage of topics such as nucleosides, amino-sugars, alditols and cyclitols also covers much research of relevance to biological and medicinal chemistry. Each volume of the series brings together references to all published work in given areas of the subject and serves as a comprehensive database for the active research chemist Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage in major areas of chemical research. Compiled by teams of leading authorities in the relevant subject areas, the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, with regular, in-depth accounts of progress in particular fields of chemistry. Subject coverage within different volumes of a given title is similar and publication is on an annual or biennial basis.

Book Sensorial and analytical profiling of orange juice and apple juice

Download or read book Sensorial and analytical profiling of orange juice and apple juice written by Sabrina Kotter-Seel and published by Herbert Utz Verlag. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the modern product development process, newly developed products have to be tested in terms of their analytical and sensorial stability throughout the whole shelf-life. A real-time storage at ambient conditions until reaching the best before date is not efficient considering the required time and in commercial resources. Therefore, accelerated shelf-life testing (ASLT) has become a central step in the usual product development procedure. The objective of this work was the development and establishment of prediction models regarding the stability and shelf-life of orange juice and apple juice. To this end, the juices were stored at different temperatures and were investigated regarding their sensory profiles by quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA) and their compositions of volatiles by untargeted profiling via GC-MS. The final prediction models were derived by combination of the sensory and volatiles-related data sets in a holistic prediction approach.

Book Biodiesel Fuels Based on Edible and Nonedible Feedstocks Wastes and Algae

Download or read book Biodiesel Fuels Based on Edible and Nonedible Feedstocks Wastes and Algae written by Ozcan Konur and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of the Handbook of Biodiesel and Petrodiesel Fuels presents a representative sample of the population papers in the field of feedstock-specific biodiesel fuels. The research on feedstocks for biodiesel fuels has first focused on the edible oils as first-generation biodiesel fuels. However, the public concerns about the competition with foods based on these feedstocks and adverse impact on the ecological diversity and deforestation have resulted in the exploration of nonedible-oil-based biodiesel fuels as second-generation biodiesel fuels in the first instance. Due to the ecological and cost benefits of treating wastes, waste oil-based biodiesel fuels as third-generation biodiesel fuels have emerged. Furthermore, following a series of influential review papers, the research has focused on the algal oil-based biodiesel fuels in recent years. Since the cost of feedstocks in general constitutes 85% of the total biodiesel production costs, the research focused more on improving biomass and lipid productivity in these research fields. Furthermore, since water, CO2, and nutrients (primarily N and P) have been major ingredients for the algal biomass and lipid production, the research has also intensified in the use of wastewaters and flue gases for algal biomass production to reduce the ecological burdens and the production costs. Part 1 presents a representative sample of the population papers in the field of edible oil-based biodiesel fuels covering major research fronts. It covers soybean oil-based biodiesel fuels, palm oil-based biodiesel fuels, and rapeseed oil-based biodiesel fuels as case studies besides an overview paper. Part 2 presents a representative sample of the population papers in the field of nonedible oil-based biodiesel fuels covering major research fronts. It covers Jatropha oil-based biodiesel fuels, polanga oil-based biodiesel fuels, and moringa oil-based biodiesel fuels as case studies besides an overview paper. Part 3 presents a representative sample of the population papers in the field of waste oil-based biodiesel fuels covering major research fronts. It covers wastewater sludge-based biodiesel fuels, waste cooking oil-based biodiesel fuels, and microbial oil-based biodiesel fuels as case studies besides an overview paper. Part 4 presents a representative sample of the population papers in the field of algal oil-based biodiesel fuels covering major research fronts. It covers algal biomass production in general, algal biomass production in wastewaters, algal lipid production, hydrothermal liquefaction of algal biomass, algal lipid extraction, and algal biodiesel production besides an overview paper. This book will be useful to academics and professionals in the fields of Energy Fuels, Chemical Engineering, Physical Chemistry, Biotechnology and Applied Microbiology, Environmental Sciences, and Thermodynamics. Ozcan Konur is both a materials scientist and social scientist by training. He has published around 200 journal papers, book chapters, and conference papers. He has focused on the bioenergy and biofuels in recent years. In 2018, he edited ‘Bioenergy and Biofuels’, that brought together the work of over 30 experts in their respective field. He also edited ‘Handbook of Algal Science, Technology, and Medicine’ with a strong section on the algal biofuels in 2020.

Book The Department Prism Approach The Performance Prism and Performance Evaluation

Download or read book The Department Prism Approach The Performance Prism and Performance Evaluation written by Erik Sebastian Wödl and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2013-08-09 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world of today forces companies to rigorously concentrate on key terms like ‘customer satisfaction’, ‘performance boosting’ and ‘performance measurement’. A famous tool for that was developed by Kaplan & Norton who introduced the balanced scorecard. But, Kaplan & Norton mainly concentrate on two stakeholders – the customer and the shareholder. As Neely, Adams and Kennerley (2002) claim, this is not far-reaching enough. A company must consider more stakeholders (e.g. the supplier, the employee and further more) as their approach of the performance prism explains. But, Neely and his colleagues did not explain in detail how to apply their performance prism to the departmental level, and how to connect it to a remuneration system. Here, the actual book gives brand-new ideas and tools for a consistent application of the developed framework to the departmental level. This book concentrates especially on the stakeholder approach of Neely, Adams and Kennerley which will be improved by the ‘stakeholder matrix’, and connected by the development of the ‘multidimensional performance appraisal table’ to performance evaluation. This is the second book of Erik Wödl regarding performance measurement.
