Book Fyodor Dostoevsky The Gathering Storm 1846 1847

Download or read book Fyodor Dostoevsky The Gathering Storm 1846 1847 written by Thomas Gaiton Marullo and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second book in a three-volume work on the young Fyodor Dostoevsky is a diary-portrait of his early years drawn from letters, memoirs, and criticism of the writer, as well as from the testimony and witness of family and friends, readers and reviewers, and observers and participants in his life. The result of an exhaustive search of published materials on Dostoevsky, this volume sheds crucial light on the many unexplored corners of Dostoevsky's life in the time between the success of his first novel, Poor Folk, and the failure of his next four works. Thomas Gaiton Marullo lets the original writers speak for themselves—the good and the bad, the truth and the lies—and adds extensive notes with correctives, counterarguments, and other pertinent information. Marullo looks closely at Dostoevsky's increasingly tense ties with Vissarion Belinsky, Nikolai Nekrasov, Ivan Turgenev, and other figures of the Russian literary world. He then turns to the individuals who afforded Dostoevsky security and peace amid the often negative reception from fellow writers and readers of his early fiction. Finally, Marullo shows us Dostoevsky's break with the Belinsky circle; his struggle to stay afloat emotionally and financially; and his determination to succeed as a writer while staying true to his vision, most notably, his insights into human psychology that would become a hallmark of his later fiction. This clear and comprehensive portrait of one of the world's greatest writers provides a window into his younger years in a way no other biography has to date.

Book NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD

Download or read book NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD written by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-12-17 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully edited collection has been designed and formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. The House of the Dead is a semi-autobiographical novel, which portrays the life of convicts in a Siberian prison camp. The novel has also been published under the titles Memoirs from the House of The Dead and Notes from the Dead House (or Notes from a Dead House). The book is a loosely-knit collection of facts, events and philosophical discussion organized by "theme" rather than as a continuous story. Dostoyevsky himself spent four years in exile in such a camp following his conviction for involvement in the Petrashevsky Circle. This experience allowed him to describe with great authenticity the conditions of prison life and the characters of the convicts. Notes from Underground presents itself as an excerpt from the rambling memoirs of a bitter, isolated, unnamed narrator (generally referred to by critics as the Underground Man) who is a retired civil servant living in St. Petersburg. The first part of the story is told in monologue form, or the underground man's diary, and attacks emerging Western philosophy, especially Nikolay Chernyshevsky's What Is to Be Done? The second part of the book is called "Apropos of the Wet Snow", and describes certain events that, it seems, are destroying and sometimes renewing the underground man, who acts as a first person, unreliable narrator. It is considered by many to be the first existentialist novel. Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821-1881) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, essayist, journalist and philosopher. His literary works explore human psychology in the troubled political, social, and spiritual atmosphere of 19th-century Russia. Many literary critics rate him as one of the greatest and most prominent psychologists in world literature.

Book Dostoyevsky

Download or read book Dostoyevsky written by Ronald Hingley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1978, demonstrates how Dostoyevsky’s novels grew directly out of the pressures of their creator’s tormented experience and personality. Ronald Hingley draws upon important fresh source material, which includes the definitive Soviet edition of Dostoyevsky’s works with drafts and variants, Soviet research on the circumstances of his father’s death, and a newly deciphered section of the diary of his second wife, Anna. Hingley considers with his analysis all Dostoyevsky’s works, the ideas they contain, their varying artistic success, and their contemporary critical reception. He convincingly present’s Dostoyevsky’s genius at its most powerful when most on the attack.
