We all remember childhood fun in creating visual representations of thoughts and ideas, as children we were all experts at this way of "seeing" the world and things around us. As we grow older we are trained to see things more verbally and, as a result, our vision of situations has become more narrow. Words are limited after all, but by engaging your group in more visual activities through directed (and non-directed) doodling, a whole new perspective can be gained. The doodlevision games and exercises put fun, creativity and humor into business situations and creates an environment where possibilities that may have previously been unrecognized or unanticipated to come to light.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories and Remarks collects the best of Raymond Queneau's shorter prose. The works span his career and include short stories, an uncompleted novel, melancholic and absurd essays, occasionally baffling "Texticles," a pastiche of Alice in Wonderland, and his only play. Talking dogs, boozing horses, and suicides come head to head with ruminations on the effects of aerodynamics on addition, rhetorical dreams, and a pioneering example of permutational fiction influenced by computer language. Also included is Michel Leiris's preface from the French edition, an introduction by the translator, and endnotes addressing each piece individually. Raymond Queneau?polyglot, novelist, philosopher, poet, mathematician, screenwriter, and translator?was one of the most significant figures in twentieth-century French letters. His work touches on many of the major literary movements of his lifetime, from surrealism to the experimental school of the nouveau roman. He also founded the Oulipo, a collection of writers and mathematicians dedicated to the search for artificial inspiration via the application of constraint.

Book To Hell with It

  • Author : Dinty W. Moore
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press

  • ISBN : 1496225708
  • Pages : 142 pages

Download or read book To Hell with It written by Dinty W. Moore and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2021-03 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dante published his ambitious and unusual poem, Divine Comedy, more than seven hundred years ago. In the ensuing centuries countless retellings, innumerable adaptations, tens of thousands of fiery sermons from Catholic bishops and Baptist preachers, all those New Yorker cartoons, and masterpieces of European art have afforded Dante's fictional apparition of hell unending attention and credibility. Dinty W. Moore did not buy in. Moore started questioning religion at a young age, quizzing the nuns in his Catholic school, and has been questioning it ever since. Yet after years of Catholic school, religious guilt, and persistent cultural conditioning, Moore still can't shake the feelings of inadequacy, and asks: What would the world be like if eternal damnation was not hanging constantly over our sheepish heads? Why do we persist in believing a myth that merely makes us miserable? In To Hell with It, Moore reflects on and pokes fun at the over-seriousness of religion in various texts, combining narratives of his everyday life, reflections on his childhood, and religion's influence on contemporary culture and society.

Book Stories Poems by a Guyanese Village Boy

Download or read book Stories Poems by a Guyanese Village Boy written by Dr. Hanif Gulmahamad and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-02-20 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Description This book is a compilation of 27 short stories and 17 poems written by Dr. Hanif Gulmahamad who was born in 1945 on Springlands Sugar Estate, Corentyne, Berbice in what was then the colonial territory of British Guiana. The stories in this book are based on real incidences and events that took place in the 1950’s and early 1960’s while the author was a young lad residing at No. 73 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, Guyana. The characters mentioned in the stories were real people though most of them are probably now deceased. This book was written in 2008 and it is based on the author’s best recollections of events which occurred over 45 years ago. Due to the fact that four and a half decades elapsed between the actual occurrence of these events and the time they were written, these stories may not be completely accurate. It is not the intention of the author to portray anyone in these stories in a negative light. Real names were mentioned in the stories in an attempt to be as pragmatic as possible. Great consideration, effort, and time were expended in order to keep these stories as realistic and accurate as possible. The 1950’s and 1960’s was an idyllic and carefree time for a young lad growing up in a far away village in British Guiana. The country was still under colonial rule at that time and there were laws and rules and there was the rule of law. It was a safe and secure place to grow up as a young boy. Most people in the villages were poor but there were ample opportunities to hunt, fish, farm, and eke out a living. For a lad of my age at the time, every day was an adventure. All you had to do was walk across the road and enter the farmlands and an adventure began. Life was simple and even though people worked hard for a living they were, for the most part, a happy lot. Wealth and material possessions were not necessary ingredients for a happy and fulfilling life. People accepted their lot in life and did not aspire to unachievable ideals and goals. You made do with what you had and you were grateful for what little you had. The stories in this book cover a wide variety of events and situations some of which are humorous. Children in Guyana, particularly those who live away from the cities, will find these stories fascinating. It is the author’s hope that children in Guyana, who can most relate to these stories, are afforded an opportunity to read this book. Back in the day when the author was a young boy in Guiana, books were very scarce commodities and anything and everything in print were read with great relish. Books told the author things and took him places he could only imagine at the time. In those days there were only two radio stations in the entire country and there was no television. Two movies theatres were located at Skeldon and the cost of one shilling to attend a movie there was often cost prohibitive to many people. The events in these stories were set in a place and time that is now gone and most probably lost forever. One of the major goals of the author was to record these stories for posterity. The poems in this book cover diverse times, topics, and places. The author currently lives in southern California and works in Los Angeles. Some of these poems reflect great nostalgia and longing for a life, place, and time that is gone. For example, the poems, I am not from here, I still have my memories, and it was supposed to be a temporary thing, convey great yearning for what the author perceives as things that he has lost having left Guyana and migrated to the United States. The contents of this book cast some light on the author’s life story which is a remarkable one. Born to functionally illiterate parents on a British sugar plantation in a faraway place in Guyana, the author went on to obtain a PhD degree from the University of California, Riverside. He has written and published over 60 technical and scientific papers including two chapters in books. It is important

Book Tornado Valley Huntsville s Havoc

Download or read book Tornado Valley Huntsville s Havoc written by Shelly Miller and published by Shelly Miller. This book was released on 2013-01-10 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Touchdown! Folks in Alabama don't know whether to cheer or run when hearing the expression. Touchdown could mean that we've just won another football National Championship or it could indicate that a tornado is on the ground. I could never be a storm chaser. I'm the one the storm chases. Funnels circle around me like shark fins as I bow my head in a school hallway, kneel down in a convent, or give birth to a newborn baby wailing in unison with the tornado sirens. I huddle with toddlers in showers and beg for shelter in a McDonald's freezer. I remain a sitting duck in a second-floor apartment, and find myself in the wrong place at the wrong time while in the emergency room with storm victims. Life in the Rocket City is a thrill ride which is not for the faint of heart, this I know. So brace yourself for a front row seat on a ride through Tornado Valley! Alabama is the home of the world's deadliest twisters, and Huntsville is in the heart of the arena. Our space history is out of this world, but our tornado history will blow you away. Take a rollercoaster ride through the history of Alabama tornadoes before plunging into the gripping story of the Day of Devastation. Witness the stars falling on Alabama in 1833. Then get ready for the sky to fall! The plot twists as Huntsville's torrid tornado past comes alive in the 1974 Super Tornado Outbreak. The rollercoaster corkscrews as it encounters an unexpected twister in 1989 that slingshots the reader into the angry vortex on Airport Road. The ride cruises before taking another gut-wrenching dive that catapults its riders into an inverted twist from yet another Anderson Hills tornado in 1995. The town turns upside-down but Huntsville survives, revives, and thrives. But the worst is yet to come. Another tornado season is just around the corner. Beware of the month of April, especially on a Wednesday. The warning sirens wail, we're bombarded by softball-sized hail, and an EF3 tornado slams into the jail. It's just another day in Alabama, but the countdown clock is ticking. The next tornado warning could be "the one." Our voice drops to a whisper when we mention an EF5. We realize life is too short. The coaster accelerates. Can you feel the torque? We have no idea what's around the next bend. Suddenly, the nightmare comes true as the ride zooms out of control, this time in a free-fall on April 27, 2011. Alabama is bombarded by a record 62 tornadoes in one day. Abruptly, the ride comes to a screeching halt. The adrenaline rush subsides. You've just experienced Huntsville's Havoc. Immediately the passengers ask one another, "Do you want to ride again?" Some will and some swear, never again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book One It was an inherited struggle for many generations of those living on the outskirts of Appalachia. A poor man with poor ways, our father dictated the Bible to his own liking. Hed preach hellfire and brimstone from the pulpit before falling prey to the devils holy water again. Wed as a child, our mother, sixteen years younger than our father, guided her nine children with love and hope that all things be possible through the Lords will. My older brother was not just my brother but also my best friend. Wed confide in each other to protect our mother as hatred of our fathers sinful ways grew. With trembling hands, Id reach out to touch the dead giants that I gained courage to carry on. But at last a prayer was answered as we played in the cool springs at our farm and anticipated having a warm house to spend the cold winter in.
