Book Donor Harmonisation Ownership and Aid Effectiveness

Download or read book Donor Harmonisation Ownership and Aid Effectiveness written by Florian Meyer and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 1,0, University of Birmingham (International Development Department), language: English, abstract: This paper deals with the aid instrument budget support and discusses its strengths and weaknesses in terms of the expected effects of the instrument in areas such as donor harmonisation, ownership, aid effectiveness and accountability. By presenting the international context in which the rise of program-based approaches, such as budget support, took place and by summarizing the actual debate about the instrument and its effectiveness, the paper elaborates a set of assumptions and hypothesises which are affecting the overall performance of the instrument and have to be addressed based on the specific country context. In consequence, it examines and tests these assumptions by critically analyzing the Multi Donor Budget Support in Ghana based on a field study conducted in Accra in July 2010. The central argument of the paper is that general budget support can be one of the most effective aid instruments available at the time, as long as problems inherent to the instrument are addressed and tackled to prevent negative side effects. It comes to the conclusion that the MDBS in Ghana, although there is still room for improvement and entry points for critique, is a functioning example on how to acknowledge and implement the principles of the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness and the Accra Agenda for Action. Especially the quality of the policy dialogue and initiatives taken to avoid negative side effects in areas such as domestic as well as mutual accountability and ownership could become valuable examples for others to follow.

A continuing challenge is to ensure that assistance is provided and used as effectively as possible. This book surveys recent findings on the effectiveness of aid and the steps the Bank and other development institutions are taking to assess and improve their operations. It examines specific methods for achieving better coordination within programs and among donors and brings together recommendations on how countries and agencies can improve the administration of aid. The study concludes that five conditions are essential for aid to be effective: - Ownership by the government and participation by the affected people - Strong administrative and institutional capacity - Sound policies and good public sector management - Close coordination by donors - Improvements in aid agencies' own business practices.

Book Donor Competition for Aid Impact and Aid Fragmentation

Download or read book Donor Competition for Aid Impact and Aid Fragmentation written by Mr.Kurt Annen and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper shows that donors that maximize relative aid impact spread their budgets across many recipient countries in a unique Nash equilibrium, explaining aid fragmentation. This equilibrium may be inefficient even without fixed costs, and the inefficiency increases in the equality of donors budgets. The paper presents empirical evidence consistent with theoretical results. These imply that, short of ending donors maximization of relative aid impact, agreements to better coordinate aid allocations are not implementable. Moreover, since policies to increase donor competition in terms of aid effectiveness risk reinforcing relativeness, they may well backfire, as any such reinforcement increases aid fragmentation.

Book The Last Mile in Ending Extreme Poverty

Download or read book The Last Mile in Ending Extreme Poverty written by Laurence Chandy and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viewed from a global scale, steady progress has been made in reducing extreme poverty—defined by the $1.25-a-day poverty line—over the past three decades. This success has sparked renewed enthusiasm about the possibility of eradicating extreme poverty within a generation. However, progress is expected to become more difficult, and slower, over time. This book will examine three central changes that need to be overcome in traveling the last mile: breaking cycles of conflict, supporting inclusive growth, and managing shocks and risks. By uncovering new evidence and identifying new ideas and solutions for spurring peace, jobs, and resilience in poor countries, The Last Mile in Ending Extreme Poverty will outline an agenda to inform poverty reduction strategies for governments, donors, charities, and foundations around the world. Book Re Inventing Africa s Development

Download or read book Re Inventing Africa s Development written by Jong-Dae Park and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book analyses the development problems of sub-Sahara Africa (SSA) from the eyes of a Korean diplomat with knowledge of the economic growth Korea has experienced in recent decades. The author argues that Africa's development challenges are not due to a lack of resources but a lack of management, presenting an alternative to the traditional view that Africa's problems are caused by a lack of leadership. In exploring an approach based on mind-set and nation-building, rather than unity – which tends to promote individual or party interests rather than the broader country or national interests – the author suggests new solutions for SSA's economic growth, inspired by Korea's successful economic growth model much of which is focused on industrialisation. This book will be of interest to researchers, policymakers, NGOs and governmental bodies in economics, development and politics studying Africa's economic development, and Korea's economic growth model.
