Book Queer Feminist Science Studies

Download or read book Queer Feminist Science Studies written by Cyd Cipolla and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queer Feminist Science Studies takes a transnational, trans-species, and intersectional approach to this cutting-edge area of inquiry between womens, gender, and sexuality studies and science and technology studies (STS). The essays here queeror denaturalize and make strangeideas that are taken for granted in both areas of study. Reimagining the meanings of and relations among queer and feminist theories and a wide range of scientific disciplines, contributors foster new critical and creative knowledge-projects that attend to shifting and uneven operations of power, privilege, and dispossession, while also highlighting potentialities for uncertainty, subversion, transformation, and play. Theoretically and rhetorically powerful, these essays also take seriously the materiality of natural objects and phenomena: bones, voles, chromosomes, medical records and more all help substantiate answers to questions such as, What is sex? How are race, gender, sexuality, and other systems of differences co-constituted? The foundational essays and new writings collected here offer a generative resource for students and scholars alike, demonstrating the ingenuity and dynamism of queer feminist scholarship.

Book excerpt: The definition of carnal feelings and desires are sexual and physical, without any spiritual element. Their ruling passion is that of carnal love. I knew her mind coursed with carnal lust, raw and unquenchable as she stared at me with those striking blue eyes of hers. It broke my heart to know I was just her plaything and nothing more. I was falling in love with Emma, but I don't think she can love me back. Emma just isn't built that way. I was going to have to be satisfied with being used for her pleasure or not being with her at all. I had a tough decision to make, and after the mind-blowing intimacy we had just shared, I was in no condition to make that judgment. Emma Cross, a hugely successful CEO, is used to getting what she wants when she wants it with no questions asked and no strings attached. When she meets Mia Blackburn, a thirty-two-year-old divorced mother, she can't help but be drawn to her gorgeous body. Still, Mia's demure attitude and reservations about her own sexuality create the most intoxicating game of cat and mouse Emma Cross has ever played with a lover. Emma gives Mia everything she has ever wanted and more, but will she be able to give Mia the one thing she truly desires - her undying love? Or will her carnal games be as far as Emma Cross is willing to go?Her Carnal Games Series Order: Her Carnal Love: Book OneHer Carnal Desire: Book Two Her Carnal Undoing: Book Three

Book The Moral of the Story

Download or read book The Moral of the Story written by Henry T. Edmondson and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to The Moral of the Story, all preeminent political theorists, are unified by their concern with the instructive power of great literature. This thought-provoking combination of essays explores the polyvalent moral and political impact of classic world literatures on public ethics through the study of some of its major figures-including Shakespeare, Dante, Cervantes, Jane Austen, Henry James, Joseph Conrad, Robert Penn Warren, and Dostoevsky. Positing the uniqueness of literature's ability to promote dialogue on salient moral and intellectual virtues, editor Henry T. Edmonson III has culled together a wide-ranging exploration of such fundamental concerns as the abuse of authority, the nature of good leadership, the significance of 'middle class virtues' and the needs of adolescents. This collection reinvigorates the study of classic literature as an endeavor that is not only personally intellectually satisfying, but also an inimitable and unique way to enrich public discourse.

Book Dante and the Origins of Italian Literary Culture

Download or read book Dante and the Origins of Italian Literary Culture written by Teodolinda Barolini and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Teodolinda Barolini explores the sources of Italian literary culture in the figures of its lyric poets and its “three crowns”: Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio. Barolini views the origins of Italian literary culture through four prisms: the ideological/philosophical, the intertextual/multicultural, the structural/formal, and the social. The essays in the first section treat the ideology of love and desire from the early lyric tradition to the Inferno and its antecedents in philosophy and theology. In the second, Barolini focuses on Dante as heir to both the Christian visionary and the classical pagan traditions (with emphasis on Vergil and Ovid). The essays in the third part analyze the narrative character of Dante’s Vita nuova, Petrarch’s lyric sequence, and Boccaccio’s Decameron. Barolini also looks at the cultural implications of the editorial history of Dante’s rime and at what sparso versus organico spells in the Italian imaginary. In the section on gender, she argues that the didactic texts intended for women’s use and instruction, as explored by Guittone, Dante, and Boccaccio—but not by Petrarch—were more progressive than the courtly style for which the Italian tradition is celebrated. Moving from the lyric origins of the Divine Comedy in “Dante and the Lyric Past” to Petrarch’s regressive stance on gender in “Notes toward a Gendered History of Italian Literature”—and encompassing, among others, Giacomo da Lentini, Guido Cavalcanti, and Guittone d’Arezzo—these sixteen essays by one of our leading critics frame the literary culture of thirteenth-and fourteenth-century Italy in fresh, illuminating ways that will prove useful and instructive to students and scholars alike.
