Women's agency has also been a glaring blind spot in the scholarly pursuit of gender perspectives on the production of written artefacts. This volume addresses these lacunae by highlighting manuscripts and inscriptions by and for women, their active participation and enabling sponsorship, and their role in the circulation and dissemination of written artefacts. Although the royal court abandoned the city in 1364, it remained an important urban center with extensive residential quarters functioning on and around the citadel hill until the end of the 19th century. An archaeological expedition from the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, University of Warsaw, has been working at Old Dongola since 1964. A new project, âeoeUMMA. Urban Metamorphosis of the community of a Medieval African capital cityâe , funded by the European Research Council, was launched in 2018. UMMA (Arab. for 'community') is a multidisciplinary project conceived of as the first study of the liminal phases of the Christian African community inhabiting Old Dongola and the emergence of a Muslim city-state organized along different social and religious paradigms. The project investigates the impact that the weakening of the central authority and migrations of Arab tribes had on the kingdomâe(tm)s capital city and its community and seeks to trace patterns of continuity and change on a household level. It is one of the few excavation projects in Sudan systematically conducted on a deep-stratified urban site spanning the Funj period (16th-18th centuries). Material studies presented in this volume offer insights on household assemblages and the function of the uncovered objects within the domestic space. Personal items found in the excavated contexts help derive information on the everyday apparel of the cityâe(tm)s inhabitants and on their customs.

Book excerpt: Old Dongola, a royal metropolis, the political and economic center of the Medieval Christian kingdom of Makuria, flourished from the 5th/6th century to the 14th century. The royal complex on the Citadel, surrounded by imposing stone fortifications, dates from the earliest period of the city's existence. Other representative buildings were founded in the 9th century, among them the Throne Hall later converted into a mosque that still towers over the site today. The city's grandeur also finds expression in sacral complexes - numerous churches and a monastery - that shed light on local religious practice and boast a rich collection of stunning mural paintings. Although the royal court abandoned Dongola in 1364, the city remained an important urban center with extensive residential quarters functioning on and around the Citadel for several centuries. The Mission of the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology to Old Dongola has been excavating the Makurian capital for over 50 years. This volume contains a comprehensive report on fieldwork and conservation conducted by a team led by Wlodzimierz Godlewski in years 2012-2014. The contributions, however, go beyond the work of recent seasons and refer broadly to the stock of knowledge accumulated over decades of earlier research. Chapters are devoted to the architecture, building techniques and urban planning of the Makurian capital. Several contributions concern wall paintings, focusing on their iconography, as well as physical characteristics. The tome also includes results of recent specialized research on material brought to light during earlier campaigns. The discussed categories of finds include texts, pottery, drainage installations, animal bones, and vessel stoppers. Initially Berenike was a principal entrepot for the importation of elephants, ivory and gold for the Ptolemaic government. In Roman times the expanded volume and variety of merchandise was more commercial and civilian in nature. The Berenike Project, now a joint American-Polish endeavor, builds and expands upon surveys and excavations conducted at this site and its environs for eight seasons by an American-Dutch team between 1994 and 2001. The result of two short fields seasons appear here: conducted in early March 2008 and late January-February 2009. While some of the chapters are brief reports, which will appear in fuller form elsewhere, others are more expansive and detailed. The material contained herein should be useful to those interested in many aspects of Hellenistic-Roman ports in general, and the Eastern Desert and Red Sea coast of Egypt in particular. The volume should also appeal to those with a wider interest in the ancient cultural and economic exchanges between the Mediterranean basin and the Hellenistic-roman world on the one hand and those peoples and cultures situated along the littorals and in the hinterlands of the Red Sea and Indian Ocean basin on the other during the course of eight centuries.

The climatic fluctuations documented during this period have led human populations from the Middle and Late Palaeolithic to adapt to a changing Nile. In particular, the global shift to more arid conditions regionally translated into the expansion of the Sahara, the lowering of sea levels and the desiccation of some major eastern African lakes. These climatically-induced environmental changes influenced the behaviour of the Nile —although how exactly is still debated— and its role as an ecological refugium for human populations living in its vicinity. Genetic and fossil evidence highlight a strong population substructure in Africa during this period, suggesting the alternation of phases of major dispersals of modern humans within the continent, as well as out-of and back-into Africa, with phases of relative isolation of populations, which might be linked to the creation of environmental refugia during the climatic fluctuations of this period. Understanding to what extent the technological variability observed in north-eastern Africa between 75,000 and 15,000 years ago is linked to environmental changes and/or possible contacts between different human populations is critical in this context. The best-preserved evidence for past human behavior are archaeological assemblages, most often lithic assemblages. However, the use of different terminologies, whether they refer to cultural or techno-typological entities, hampers any systematic comparison between the Nile Valley on one hand and neighbouring regions on the other hand. An outcome of this practice is the artificial ‘isolation’ of the north-eastern African record from its neighbouring regions. This monograph groups together chapters presenting updated reviews and new data on regional archaeological, palaeoenvironmental, palaeoanthropological and geological records from north-eastern Africa, North Africa, the Levant and eastern Africa for the period ranging from 75,000 to 15,000 years ago. While north-eastern Africa, and the Nile Valley in particular, is generally considered as one of the main possible routes of migrations out of Africa, few recent studies allow the data from this region to be viewed from a macro-regional perspective. This book allows the exploration of topical issues, such as modern humans’ capacity for adaptation, particularly in the context of climate change, as well as population interactions and human dispersals in the past, taking a multidisciplinary approach.
