Each chapter gives a detailed examination of some of the facts behind some of Derby's most notorious murder cases. Carefully researched the book re-counts the circumstances and consequences of each individual case. Whilst the book covers the hard facts of the brutal times the author gives insight into the social conditions prevalent at the time and the courtroom arena in which so many stood trial for their life. These are the cases that dominated the breakfast tables of households both local and national! They caused argument and debate across the whole country and often packed Derby's courtroom to the rafters. Spanning almost 150 years the book looks at the cause and effect of human emotions that led to tragedies and how both society and the legal system reacted.Cases include 'Pity the Poor Children—The Murders of Elizabeth and Martha Smith 18541'. Book The Pottery Cottage Murders

Download or read book The Pottery Cottage Murders written by Carol Ann Lee and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2020-03-05 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A psychopathic criminal on the run from prison. A family of five held hostage in their home. A frantic police manhunt across the snowbound Derbyshire moors. Just one survivor. The definitive account of the terrifying 1977 Pottery Cottage murders that shocked Britain. For three days, escaped prisoner Billy Hughes played macabre psychological games with Gill Moran and her family, keeping them in separate rooms of their home while secretly murdering them one by one. On several occasions Hughes ordered Gill and her husband Richard to leave the house for provisions, confident that they would return without betraying him in order to protect their loved ones. Blizzards hampered the desperate police search, but they learned where the dangerous convict was hiding and closed in on the cottage. A high-speed car chase on icy roads ended with a crash and the killer being shot as he swung a newly sharpened axe at his final victim. This was Britain's first instance of police officers committing 'justifiable homicide' against an escapee. The story of these terrible events is told here by Carol Ann Lee and Peter Howse, the former chief inspector who saved Gill Moran's life over forty years ago. Peter's professional role has permitted access to witness statements, crime scene photographs and police reports. Peter Howse and Carol Ann Lee have made use of these, along with fresh interviews with many of those directly involved, to tell a fast-paced and truly shocking story with great insight and empathy.

Book Nonconformity in Derbyshire

Download or read book Nonconformity in Derbyshire written by Stephen Orchard and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-11-01 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonconformity in Derbyshire has been little researched and what has been published about it is scattered through many sources, ancient and modern. There is no standard nineteenth-century history as there is for many other counties. Yet there is an important story to be told. Derbyshire was the birthplace of John Cotton; the minutes of its Wirksworth Classis are a rare survival from the Commonwealth period; from Duffield in Derbyshire Roger Morrice, whose significant Journal has been published, was ejected. The book England's Remembrancer (1663), published sermons by ejected country ministers, as distinct from London ones, is dominated by ministers from Derbyshire or with connections there. An important Dissenting Academy was established at Findern, near Derby, and the diary of James Clegg, dissenting minister, has been published. This book provides the context for these events and tells the stories of the county families who promoted Dissent. An evaluation of Nonconformity in Derbyshire also provides a case study for a wider assessment of the impact of Dissent out of London and its eventual decline through the eighteenth century. The story concludes with the attempts of Thomas Wilson, an important founder of modern Congregationalism, to revive dissenting causes in his home county as the eighteenth century drew to a close.
