Book excerpt: Rebellion was recurrent in the Highlands because the Gaels (Scoti) were an often-oppressed indigenous minority in the nation, Scotland, to which they gave their name. They spoke a language, Gaelic, few outsiders would learn, and had their own family and social system, the clans. Warfare was bloody, culminating in the catastrophe of Culloden Moor during the doomed quest to restore the Stuart kingship to all of Britain. Economic hardship, including the near-genocidal Clearances, in which tenant farmers were replaced with sheep, drove the Gaels from the glens and islands, so that most today live in the diaspora, including millions in North America. Although the Gaels lack a single genetic identity, they clearly draw from distinct roots in the Irish, Norse and Picts. Despite their hardship, the Gaels are also presented in romantic portrayals by the artistic elite of other nations. This book offers ways in which the reader might find roots and ancestry in unfamiliar terrain. Chapters discuss the landscape and language of the Highlanders, the rise of clans, feuds and invasions, and eventual emigration.

Book Uncle Tom s Cabin and American Culture

Download or read book Uncle Tom s Cabin and American Culture written by Thomas F. Gossett and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of Uncle Tom's Cabin presents the complex social forces that have influenced the reading of the novel. Gossett examines Stowe's early life and the circumstances that transformed her into a major figure in the antislavery struggle. He describes the process of the composition of the novel; compares its reception in the North, the South and in England; examines the idyllic pictures of slavery in the "anti-Tom" novels of the l850s; and compares the novel with several of the popular stage adaptations. The author reveals how the novel has been reconstituted by every reading of it and how the readings have proceeded from different social agendas for resolving the race problems. He also covers the main ideas and characters of the novel, displays its dual character (it was instrumental in ending slavery but fostered new stereotypes of blacks), and illuminates the importance of racial themes in American cultural and political history. ISBN 0-87074-189-6: $29.95.

Book The Cheviot the Stag and the Black Black Oil

Download or read book The Cheviot the Stag and the Black Black Oil written by John McGrath and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written during the 1970s, John McGrath's winding, furious, innovative play tracks the economic history and exploitation of the Scottish Highlands from the post-Rebellion suppression of the clans to the story of the Clearances: in the nineteenth century, aristocratic landowners discovered the profitability of sheep farming, and forced a mass emigration of rural Highlanders, burning their houses in order to make way for the Cheviot sheep. The play follows the thread of capitalist and repressive exploitation through the estates of the stag-hunting landed gentry, to the 1970s rush for profit in the name of North Sea Oil. Described by the playwright as having a “ceilidh” format, The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil draws on historical research alongside Gaelic song and the Scots' love of variety and popular entertainment to tell this epic story. A totally distinctive cultural and theatrical phenomenon, the play championed several new approaches to theatre, raising its profile as a means of political intervention; proposing a collective, democratic, collaborative approach to creating theatre; offering a language of performance accessible to working-class people; producing theatre in non-purpose-built theatre spaces; breaking down the barrier between audience and performers through interaction; and taking theatre to people who otherwise would not access it. The play received its premiere in 1973 by the agit-prop theatre group 7:84, of which John McGrath was founder and Artistic Director, and toured Scotland to great critical and audience acclaim.
