Book Don t Shoot We re Republicans

Download or read book Don t Shoot We re Republicans written by Jack Owens and published by History Publishing Company LLC. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The image of the FBI Special Agent, since the days of J. Edgar Hoover, has been carefully crafted as being polite, clean shaven young men and pleasantly smiling women whose hallmarks are polite words and good manners. Author Jack Owens goes behind that facade and shares the human side of the FBI. With a breezy sweep of the 30 years of his life as a Special Agent, Owens, with his remarkable wit, introduces the reader to a new type of FBI Agent- one who could appreciate the irony and humour of life and laughed and "cussed", yes "cussed", as he met those ironies and idiosyncrasies in the field in Alabama. Owens' shares his unique perspective with the reader from his early days as an FBI trainee through chasing spies, terrorists and assorted "bad guys", putting down a prison riot and setting up roadblocks for desperadoes where, occasionally, he encountered some good people too.

The worlds most famous class of destroyers, the Fletchers, joined the American fleet during World War II. There were 175 of these little gray workhorses, all heavily armed against threats from sea, land and air. No admiral ever had enough of them. Most fought in the Pacific War against Japan, serving anonymously alongside well-known aircraft carriers and battleships. Dozens of Fletchers ran with the big boys in mighty Fast Carrier Task Force 38/58 under Admirals Halsey, Spruance, Mitscher and McCain. The USS Colahan (DD-658) steamed this perilous but triumphant journey to Tokyo Bay, surviving when others didnt. This is the fifth and final edition of The Original Tomcat: A Fletcher Destroyer Goes to War. The book, which follows the Colahan through the climactic 1944/1945 battles of the Japanese-American Pacific War, was author-published four times in limited editions between 1994 and 1997. It was well received by Colahan shipmates and Fletcher-class destroyer fans, and it continues to be in demand. Here is a sampling of reader reactions: A wonderful work by a skilled writer. All ships should be so lucky as to have their exploits chronicled so well. Thomas J. Peltin, president of Tin Can Sailors, Inc. A magnificent piece of writing. Ray Loughrige, radioman, USS Colahan, Pacific War. Thank you for helping me relive my forgotten youth. Howard Ralby, fireman, USS Colahan, Pacific War. I am absolutely delighted with it. Dick Jones, signalman, ComDesRon 53 staff, Pacific War. Your story makes memories come alive. Clyde D. Killion, chief yeoman, USS Colahan, Pacific War. I commend you for your incredible effort. George Whitney, signalman, USS Colahan, Pacific War. Thanks, Jackson, for making an old sailor feel real good. George McLaughlin, torpedoman, USS Colahan, Pacific War. A great book, a real pleasure. Jim Exchange, baker, USS Colahan, Pacific War. A moving account of the Hazelwood rescue. Peter Dingman, medical officer, USS Colahan, Pacific War. You made the Colahan live again! Henry Gaffin, yeoman, USS Colahan, Pacific War. I couldnt put it down. The Colahan needed this, and we who served on the Colahan needed this. Jim Kinduell, gunnery officer, USS Colahan, Pacific War. A very impressive piece of work. Tim Rizzuto, ships superintendent, USS Kidd Memorial. This is much, much more than a ships history. George English, president of the USS Wedderburn Association. The Original Tomcat has found shelf space in several libraries interested in naval history the Library of Congress; the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation in Washington; East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, and the Louisiana Naval War Memorial Foundation in Baton Rouge, where a copy is on permanent display in the Colahan locker aboard the memorialized USS Kidd. General libraries offering the book include the Springfield-Greene County

Download or read book At War With The Wind written by David Sears and published by Kensington Publishing Corp.. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from hundreds of interviews with WWII veterans who survived Japan’s terrifying kamikaze strikes, acclaimed author and former U.S. Navy Officer David Sears vividly portrays what it was like to experience this tactic, capturing the real-life dramas behind America’s first confrontation with the psychology and devastating impact of suicide warfare. In the last days of World War II, a new and baffling weapon terrorized the United States Navy in the Pacific. To the sailors who learned to fear them, the body-crashing warriors of Japan were known as “suiciders”; among the Japanese, they were named for a divine wind that once saved the home islands from invasion: Told from the perspective of the men who endured this horrifying tactic, At War with the Wind is the first book to recount in nail-biting detail what it was like to experience an attack by Japanese kamikazes. Acclaimed author David Sears draws on personal interviews and unprecedented research to create a narrative of war that is stunning in its vividness and unforgettable in its revelations. This is the candid story of a war within a war—a relentless series of furious and violent engagements pitting men determined to die against men determined to live. Its echoes resonate hauntingly at a time of global conflict, especially when suicide as a weapon remains a perplexing and terrifying reality. Book Linebackers of the Sea

Download or read book Linebackers of the Sea written by Ray Lubeski and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Ray Lubeski served aboard the destroyer USS Harlan R. Dickson (DD-708) from 1955 to 1958. This history entitled Linebackers of the Sea covers American destroyers that fought in WWII and their heroic crewmen, including many who died in battle. The ships covered in this book generally duplicate those included in Robert Sinclair Parkin's 1995 history entitled Blood on the Sea: American Destroyers Lost in World War II. However, Lubeski does not clarify the exact scope of his book, since some destroyers lost in WWII (e.g., Hull (DD-350), Brownson (DD-518)) do not get included, and other destroyers that fought but did not sink (e.g., Hazelwood (DD-531), Murphy (DD-603)) are included. Most of the 75 destroyers and three other ships in this book have a separate chapter that covers each ship's history. The first half of the book has ships that saw action in the Atlantic, and the last half tells stories of ships in the Pacific. The author writes that he obtained most destroyer histories from Wikipedia with supplements for some ships based on interviews of survivors or their relatives. These firsthand accounts greatly enhance the histories, but only about a third of the destroyers included in the book have personal stories, and a few of these are quite short such as the following one from a survivor of USS Pringle (DD-477), which sank after being hit by a kamikaze aircraft carrying a bomb on April 16, 1945 (p. 151). Book The Washington War

Download or read book The Washington War written by James Lacey and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Team of Rivals for World War II—the inside story of how FDR and the towering personalities around him waged war in the corridors of Washington, D.C., to secure ultimate victory on the battlefields of Europe and the Pacific. The Washington War is the story of how the Second World War was fought and won in the capital’s halls of power—and how the United States, which in December 1941 had a nominal army and a decimated naval fleet, was able in only thirty months to fling huge forces onto the European continent and shortly thereafter shatter Imperial Japan’s Pacific strongholds. Three quarters of a century after the overwhelming defeat of the totalitarian Axis forces, the terrifying, razor-thin calculus on which so many critical decisions turned has been forgotten—but had any of these debates gone the other way, the outcome of the war could have been far different: The army in August 1941, about to be disbanded, saved by a single vote. Production plans that would have delayed adequate war matériel for years after Pearl Harbor, circumvented by one uncompromising man’s courage and drive. The delicate ballet that precluded a separate peace between Stalin and Hitler. The almost-adopted strategy to stage D-Day at a fatally different time and place. It was all a breathtakingly close-run thing, again and again. Renowned historian James Lacey takes readers behind the scenes in the cabinet rooms, the Pentagon, the Oval Office, and Hyde Park, and at the pivotal conferences—Campobello Island, Casablanca, Tehran—as these disputes raged. Here are colorful portraits of the great figures—and forgotten geniuses—of the day: New Dealers versus industrialists, political power brokers versus the generals, Churchill and the British high command versus the U.S. chiefs of staff, innovators versus entrenched bureaucrats . . . with the master manipulator, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, at the center, setting his brawling patriots one against the other and promoting and capitalizing on the furious turf wars. Based on years of research and extensive, previously untapped archival resources, The Washington War is the first integrated, comprehensive chronicle of how all these elements—and towering personalities—clashed and ultimately coalesced at each vital turning point, the definitive account of Washington at real war and the titanic political and bureaucratic infighting that miraculously led to final victory.

Book excerpt: From New York Times bestselling author Jonathan W. Jordan—author of Brothers, Rivals, Victors—comes the intimate true story of President Franklin Roosevelt’s inner circle of military leadership, the team of rivals who shaped World War II and America. “Superbly written, well researched, and highly interesting.”—Jean Edward Smith, New York Times bestselling author of FDR and Eisenhower in War and Peace After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States was wakened from its slumber of isolationism. To help him steer the nation through the coming war, President Franklin Roosevelt turned to the greatest “team of rivals” since the days of Lincoln: Secretary of War Henry Stimson, Admiral Ernest J. King, and General George C. Marshall. Together, these four men led the nation through history’s most devastating conflict and ushered in a new era of unprecedented American influence, all while forced to overcome the profound personal and political differences which divided them. A startling and intimate reassessment of U.S. leadership during World War II, American Warlords is a remarkable glimpse behind the curtain of presidential power.

In this second volume of his acclaimed series, Alex Deane reminds us that, throughout history, human nature has remained exactly the same, and the way that people responded to the most amusing, horrifying and convoluted of circumstances in the past can teach us everything we need to know about who we are today.
