Book My Fair Eliza

  • Author : John Davies
  • Publisher : Trafford Publishing
  • Release : 2013-03-27
  • ISBN : 1466982764
  • Pages : 565 pages

Download or read book My Fair Eliza written by John Davies and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-27 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Having picked up the sword of the Crusader in my last novel A PINT-SIZED WHISPERER exposing the scandalous pressure applied to pregnant women to terminate their foetus after being told their unborn babies were likely to be suffering with the dreaded Downs Syndrome, I now lighten up. Although A PINT-SIZED WHISPERER was commercially received successfully and questions raised in the House of Commons which rebuked certain sections of the NHS, I now return to my genre of easy-reading fiction. * MY FAIR ELIZA is a light-hearted parody of Alan Jay Werners book and George Bernard Shaws evergreen musical show My Fair Lady. * It is more than that. It is a heartfelt tribute to those dedicated people, they used to call crimpers, who couple their dexterity with brush, comb and scissors with a friendliness that keep us amused and entertained while we are sat shrouded by a voluminous sheet in their salon chairs.

Book A Stinging Delight

Download or read book A Stinging Delight written by David Storey and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third son of a coalminer, David Storey takes us from his tough upbringing in Wakefield, to being 'sold' to Leeds Rugby League Club, to his escape to the Slade School of Art and his life in post-war London. He describes shocking scenes in the seventeen deprived East End schools in which he taught. He documents the childhood death of his eldest brother, addressing much of the memoir to him and exploring how this relates to his own sometimes paralysing depression, which haunted most of his life. And yet, a prolific and celebrated writer, he recalls heady spells in New York, close relationships in the theatre with Joycelyn Herbert, Ralph Richardson and Lindsay Anderson, early success with This Sporting Life, and winning the Booker Prize for his novel Saville.

Book Odd Shaped Balls

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Scally
  • Publisher : Random House
  • Release : 2012-03-23
  • ISBN : 1780574649
  • Pages : 227 pages

Download or read book Odd Shaped Balls written by John Scally and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-03-23 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rugby is not a game for those who think that centres are what you find in a box of Black Magic or who confuse Jonah Lomu with Joanna Lumley. At the same time, it is not a game for the bright: what kind of tortured mind would invent an oval ball? Of course, it helps if you know the rules and don't have any fear. In this respect you are in the same boat as most referees, particularly if you have a problem with your eyesight. Odd-Shaped Balls captures the humour, the agony and the ecstasy of one of the world's most popular sports. It snoops inside sweaty, smelly dressing-rooms, reveals the passions of coaches and fans - without whom rugby would cease to exist - and delves deep into the sport's archives to recall its heroes, villains and victims, all of whom are part of the daily currency. The book is no less than a who's who of the game, with both old and young getting the opportunity to have their say. Lining out is a cast of mischief-makers, miscreants and mad-hatters: from Max Boyce to Keith Wood; from Sean Fitzpatrick to Austin Healy; from Bill Beaumont and his streaker to Gavin Hastings; from Gareth Edwards to David Campese; and from the man in the scrum to the man at the bar. All exponents of surrealism, comic genius and savage wit, they offer a quirky insight into the sporting psyche as well as providing some riotous good laughs. With hundreds of funny stories, Odd-Shaped Balls is a light-hearted romp through decades of rugby tomfoolery that is guaranteed to put a smile on the face of all sports fans.

Book For Self and Country

Download or read book For Self and Country written by Estate of Rick Eilert and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2010-05-15 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vietnam was often called a “teenager’s war.” The average age was 19.2, so in the main, the War was fought by 17, 18, 19 and 20 year olds barely out of high school and often without the income, intelligence, inclination, or focus to attend college. For everyone, the draft loomed large in our futures, so you could choose your branch of service or let the draft decide for you. This was the 60’s. Fresh from sock hops and college freshman mixers, young men found themselves in a fight for their lives, from the Delta to the DMZ, on animal trails, numbered hills and in remote jungle outposts. Teenagers witnessed the unspeakable carnage of war while trying to understand the collision of emotions and insult to the senses that is combat. Thousands died there and many thousands more were wounded and maimed. So the hell of combat was replaced by the painful recovery in a military hospital. For me and thousands of others it was Great Lakes Naval Hospital at Great Lakes, Illinois. For Self and Country follows my many months of recovery along with the stories of the brave young men who surrounded me and sustained me with friendship, uncommon humor, and courage. This is a story of family, young love, and the magnificent care administered by the Navy doctors, nurses and revered Corpsmen. Great Lakes was a place of great pain but also recovery, not just from the physical damage we sustained but also the unseen emotional injuries everyone endured but rarely talked about. We helped each other in our recovery by talking to each other about our wartime experiences and how we would need to cope outside the insulated and protected hospital. Most of us had no expectation of surviving Vietnam; now that we had we were unsure what place we would have in civilian life.

Book The Best Loved Game

Download or read book The Best Loved Game written by Geoffrey Moorhouse and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'It is now thirty-five years since Geoffrey Moorhouse wrote his cricket classic The Best Loved Game, which also seems unimaginable, but only because it feels like last week. Even so, in that time the game has changed, in many respects beyond recognition, which makes the book more valuable than ever - as an elegy for a lost world.' Matthew Engel, in his new Preface Geoffrey Moorhouse spent the summer of 1978 sampling cricket at every level: from Eton v Harrow to the Lancashire League; from Cambridge undergraduates getting a lesson from Zaheer Abbas to Ian Botham excelling with bat and ball at Lord's; from a farmer's boy making an unbeaten 24 at an Oxfordshire village match to the incomparable clowning of Derek Randall at Trent Bridge. 'Surely destined to rest beside the finest works of this nature in the library of cricket.' David Frith, Wisden Cricket Monthly
