Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living in the secluded hills of Malibu Canyon is a man known as the "Invisible Gardener." With a title like that, some confusion is inevitable: Could he be a playful, elf-like man who comes down from the canyon at dawn to sprinkle dew over the ground before others awaken? Or simply a wonderfully unobtrusive groundskeeper who literally fades into the landscape while dutifully taking care of the foliage? Actually, as Andy Lopez explains, he is not the Invisible Gardener at all - nature is. I am just one of her helpers he states. And if I could get more people to do what l am doing instead of consistently destroying the environment, she would have a much easier job. In 1956, he started his own business with around 150 customers by the ninth grade. He did not get the name Invisible Gardener until 1970. After his service in the US Navy, he went to The University of Florida. He taught an organic gardening class, started an organic gardening club and produced various books. He started his current business in 1970 and one of his customers referred him as The Invisible Gardener and the name stuck! Lopez, better known around the world as The Invisible Gardener, has been in the organic pest control business since 1972. Prior to that year, Andy had been a student at the University of Florida in Gainesville. While attending the university, he started The L.I.S.T (Living Institute of Survival Technology). The primary function of this organization was to promote the awareness of alternative knowledge, lifestyles and businesses emerging in Florida at that time. This was accomplished with the publication of several periodicals including - "The Gainesville People's Pages" and "The Florida Pages - A New Age Traveler's Guide to Florida." After his time at the University, Andy moved to Miami and became active in local gardening councils and societies, including board memberships on the Rare Fruit Council, the Rose Society, and the Horticulture Society. In 1972, he developed 3 compost products - Organa (the SuperCompost) (TM), Organa Gold(TM), and Malibu Gold(TM), and a liquid microbiological activator called SuperSeaweed(TM). It was then that he started "The Invisible Gardener" - the first 100% Organic Spraying and Pest Control Service in the USA. Using natural everyday materials, Andy developed a unique system of fertilization and pest control designed to increase balance in the target environment. Moving to Malibu, California in 1984, Andy brought his company and knowledge with him to the gardens and homes of Southern California. He has expanded his practice to include a weekly radio show, the production of video education materials and teaching at local schools and organizations. He is the author of "How to Heal the Earth in your Spare Time" -"Natural Pest Control" and his latest new book - "Don't Panic It's Organic."

  • Author : Neil Gaiman
  • Publisher : Open Road Media
  • Release : 2018-10-30
  • ISBN : 1504056280
  • Pages : 199 pages

Download or read book Don t Panic written by Neil Gaiman and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times–bestselling author’s “hilarious . . . idiosyncratic . . . delightful” and definitive companion to a global phenomenon (Publishers Weekly). Douglas Adams’s “six-part trilogy,” The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy grew from a blip of a notion into an ever-expanding multimedia universe that amassed an unprecedented cult of followers and became an international sensation. As a young journalist, Neil Gaiman was given complete access to Adams’s life, times, gossip, unpublished outtakes, and files (and became privy to his writing process, insecurities, disillusionments, challenges, and triumphs). The resulting volume illuminates the unique, funny, dramatic, and improbable chronicle of an idea, an incredibly tall man, and a mind-boggling success story. In Don’t Panic, Gaiman celebrates everything Hitchhiker: the original radio play, the books, comics, video and computer games, films, television series, record albums, stage musicals, one-man shows, the Great One himself, and towels. And as Douglas Adams himself attested: “It’s all absolutely devastatingly true—except the bits that are lies.” Updated several times in the thirty years since its original publication, Don’t Panic is available for the first time in digital form. Part biography, part tell-all parody, part pop-culture history, part guide to a guide, Don’t Panic “deserves as much cult success as the Hitchhiker’s books themselves” (Time Out).

Download or read book Quarterly Essay 45 Us and Them written by Anna Krien and published by Black Inc.. This book was released on 2012-04-01 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time in history, humans sit unchallenged at the top of the food chain. As we encroach on the wild and a vast wave of extinctions gathers force, how has our relationship with animals changed? In this dazzling essay, Anna Krien investigates the world we have made and the complexity of the choices we face. From pets to the live cattle trade, from apex predators to scientific experiments, Krien shows how we should – and do – treat our fellow creatures. As she delves deeper, she finds that animals can trigger primal emotions in us, which we are often unwilling to acknowledge. This is a clear-eyed meditation on humanity and animality, us and them, that brings out the importance of animals in an unforgettable way. “I am not weighing up whether our treatment of animals is just, because it isn’t. That age-old debate is a farce – deep down we all know it. The real question is, just how much of this injustice are we prepared to live with?” —Anna Krien, Us and Them

Book The High Road

Download or read book The High Road written by Pete Young and published by Figure 1 Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A native of Long Island, New York, Pete Young first grew cannabis on the roof of a friend’s apartment building when he was fifteen years of age. A fascination with marijuana cultivation quickly followed, with Young mastering the specifics of HID lighting, hydroponics, water polymers, genetics, organic fertilization, soil mix, outdoor growing and seed generation. After permanently relocating to southwestern Ontario in the late-1980s, Young took part in one of the first constitutional challenges to Canada’s drug laws following a police raid on the Great Canadian Hemporium, a head shop in London, Ontario. Around this time, Young befriended a young man whose severe cystic fibrosis was aided by one thing only – marijuana consumption. Young started growing marijuana for medical users, and over the next twenty years became one of the biggest producers and distributors of illicit medical marijuana in Canada. A once-frequent contributor to High Times magazine, and a regular medal winner at the international Cannabis Cup, Young has had to overcome every obstacle facing the guerilla grower, including crop theft, forest fire, police arrest, bankruptcy, home invasion, physical assault and, perhaps most intimidating of all, hungry male deer. In 2015, Young stepped onto the right side of the law when he was named master grower at Indiva, a licensed, government-sanctioned producer of medical marijuana. Riveting, funny and unsparingly truthful, Master Grower recalls one man’s transformation from renegade gardener to boardroom participant, a high-octane voyage that also captures the way in which a culture’s attitude toward its illegal substances can, and will, evolve.

This book merges themes of environmentalism, philosophy, science, psychology, language, sociology, metaphysics, religion, gender relationships, politics, poverty, population and much more towards finding frameworks about how the human race can address the awesome challenges facing it both now and into the future. The book pulls no punches about the peril of our current situation, but essentially offers an optimistic and realistic view of the future based on the premise that the human race can successfully change and adapt its behaviour in order to survive and flourish. The question is however, will it make those changes? And, will you?
